The tic in TikTok and (where) all systems go: Mass social media induced illness and Munchausen's by internet as explanatory models for social media associated abnormal illness behavior.

This paper explores the recent phenomenon of adolescents presenting en masse (both online and in clinical settings) with symptoms seemingly acquired from viewing illness-related content posted by social media influencers. The most frequently reproduced illnesses have included Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and Tourette Syndrome. It discusses evidence that the recent spate of new-onset, severe tics are a form of Mass Psychogenic Illness facilitated by social media networks (a phenomenon labeled Mass Social Media Induced Illness). It then suggests that many of those self-diagnosed with DID

Is the victimology worldview of many young therapists ill-suited for cognitive behavior therapy?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) rests on the premise that individuals possess personal agency to change their life circumstances. At the same time, given growing political homogeneity within psychology, views of individual agency are increasingly being displaced by greater emphasis on conceptualizing distress as reflecting systemic oppression. Drawing on research concerning these frameworks, this article briefly examines the implications of these trends for CBT in the United States. Specifically, we outline three potential concerns, including declining interest in traditional CBT, reduced v

History and Correlates of Smoking Cessation Behaviors Among Smokers With Serious Mental Illness.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) smoke at rates two to three times greater than the general population but are less likely to receive treatment. Increasing our understanding of correlates of smoking cessation behaviors in this group can guide intervention development. AIMS AND METHODS: Baseline data from an ongoing trial involving smokers with SMI (N = 482) were used to describe smoking cessation behaviors (ie, quit attempts, quit motivation, and smoking cessation treatment) and correlates of these behaviors (ie, demographics, attitudinal and systems-related variabl

Brief cognitive behavioral therapy reduces suicidal ideation in veterans with chronic illnesses.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effect of brief cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT) on suicidal ideation among medically ill veterans receiving mental health treatment in primary care. METHODS: Secondary analysis was conducted on data collected during a multisite, patient-randomized trial investigating the impact of bCBT (n = 180) on depression and anxiety symptoms, relative to enhanced usual care (EUC; n = 122), in patients with congestive heart failure and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. BCBT was delivered by primary care mental health providers over 4 months, with follow-up posttreat

Board-invited review: Using behavior to predict and identify ill health in animals.

We review recent research in one of the oldest and most important applications of ethology: evaluating animal health. Traditionally, such evaluations have been based on subjective assessments of debilitative signs; animals are judged ill when they appear depressed or off feed. Such assessments are prone to error but can be dramatically improved with training using well-defined clinical criteria. The availability of new technology to automatically record behaviors allows for increased use of objective measures; automated measures of feeding behavior and intake are increasingly available in comm

Stress, social rhythms, and behavioral activation: psychosocial factors and the bipolar illness course.

Current, more sophisticated models of bipolar disorder emphasize the interaction of psychosocial factors with biology as determinants of the long-term illness course. Recent research has documented the effects of psychosocial stress on the onset of new episodes, exacerbation of symptoms, and response to pharmacologic treatment in bipolar individuals. In this article, relevant theories and empiric findings regarding these relationships will be reviewed. In particular, two specific pathways relating psychosocial stressors to the onset of mania (eg, social rhythm disruption and behavioral activat

Sexual activity and other high-risk behaviors in adolescents with chronic illness: a review.

This article is a literature review of high-risk behaviors, including sexual activity, in adolescents with chronic illness. Three different models describing biopsychosocial constructs for risky behaviors are discussed. Regarding specific behaviors, findings from the literature include a substantial prevalence of sexual activity, but low level of knowledge and low prevalence of contraceptive use, in youth with chronic illness. Regarding substance use, alcohol was the most commonly used substance regardless of medical condition. Overall, substance use, as well as delinquent behavior, was lower

Functional and behavioral responses as marker of illness, and outcome in infants under 2 months.

Value of abnormal findings on 11 functional and behavioral items were studied for identification of serious illness, presence of bacteremia and prediction of the outcome (recovery or death) in infants upto 2 months of age. All the items were graded on a 3 point scale (0, 1 and 2) in the ascending order of severity. A total of 116 infants who were being evaluated for suspected sepsis were enrolled. The assessment was completed before detailed history and physical examination. Significant associations were observed between presence of serious illness and six items by lambda2-test and/or Pearson'

Stuck in Despair: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Informed Communication for Serious Illness Care.

Patients with serious medical illnesses may respond to the challenges of their illness in unique ways, shaped by personal, relational, and contextual factors. For many patients, depression and anxiety are common and may feature avoidance or withdrawal, negative expectations for outcomes, repetitive negative thinking (rumination and/or worry), sad mood, and/or irritability. These symptoms often arise from a complex and bidirectional interplay between a patient's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This dynamic system provides clinicians with multiple, clinically actionable entry points to foster

Behavioral predictors of subsequent respiratory illness signs in dogs admitted to an animal shelter.

Individual variability is evident in behavior and physiology of animals. Determining whether behavior at intake may predict subsequent illness in the animal shelter may influence the management of dogs housed at animal shelters and reduce overall disease. While normally associated with mild disease and low mortality rates, respiratory disease nevertheless poses significant challenges to the management of dogs in the stressful environment of animal shelters due to its highly infectious nature. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore whether behavior at intake can predict subsequent occur

Behavioral activities collected through smartphones and the association with illness activity in bipolar disorder.

Smartphones are useful in symptom-monitoring in bipolar disorder (BD). Objective smartphone data reflecting illness activity could facilitate early treatment and act as outcome in efficacy trials. A total of 29 patients with BD presenting with moderate to severe levels of depressive and manic symptoms used a smartphone-based self-monitoring system during 12 weeks. Objective smartphone data on behavioral activities were collected. Symptoms were clinically assessed every second week using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Young Mania Rating Scale. Objective smartphone data correlated

Illness behaviors in patients with unexplained chronic fatigue are associated with significant other responses.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and unexplained chronic fatigue (CF) are characterized by compromised functional status and physical disability. Prior research on chronic pain has suggested that social factors may contribute to disability. This study examined the relationship between significant other responses and patient outcomes in patients with unexplained CF. Questionnaire data were collected from 117 patients on physical function, fatigue, pain, illness behaviors and responses of significant others to them, and depression. Ninety-four SOs reported their perceptions of patient illness beha

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE, METHODS: To assess the amount of violent behaviour among mentally ill offenders NGRI during forensic long-term inpatient-treatment we retrospectively investigated the official incident-reports concerning verbal and physical aggression and damage to foreign property during an 8-year period in Austria's central high-security institution. RESULTS: 29.2% of our patients exhibited violent behaviour with only 7.8% being responsible for 41.1% of all incidents. Mentally impaired patients were significantly overrepresented in the violent group. Physical violence was reported in

Medical illness in school-age Kenyans in relation to nutrition, cognition, and playground behaviors.

Because medical illness is associated with malnutrition, it might contribute to the poor outcomes seen in malnourished children. This study explored relations between frequency of mild illness and development in 133 mild-to-moderately malnourished school-age Kenyan children. Morbidity information was collected for one year. Concurrent assessments of cognitive status and playground behaviors were obtained. Nutritional and environmental variables were also assessed. Girls with more reported days of mild illness performed less well on developmental measures than did their healthier female peers.

Tyramine infusions in bipolar illness: behavioral effects and longitudinal changes in pressor sensitivity.

Steady state intravenous tyramine dose pressor-response tests were administered to a patient with bipolar illness during depressed and hypomanic phases of her illness. The greatest tyramine sensitivity while unmedicated occurred when the patient was hypomanic, and the least sensitivity when she was depressed before her first switch. The data raise the possibility that changes in peripheral alpha-adrenergic receptor sensitivity accompany spontaneous mood cycles. Tyramine produced a replicable mood and cognitive alteration only in the infusion closest to the switch from hypomania to depression,

Disinhibited attachment behavior among infants reared at home: Relations to maternal severe mental illness and personality disorder symptoms.

Disinhibited attachment behavior (DAB) among infants is persistent and associated with behavioral and relational problems throughout childhood and adolescence. Little is known about risk factors for DAB among infants reared at home, although studies have linked DAB with maternal psychiatric hospitalization and maternal borderline personality disorder. The aim of the current study was to further assess the association between DAB, maternal severe mental illness (SMI; schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression), and maternal PD symptoms. Ninety-three mothers and their infants participated i

Family reinforcement of illness behavior: a comparison of adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome, juvenile arthritis, and healthy controls.

Parental encouragement of illness behavior is hypothesized to correlate with psychosocial dysfunction in adolescents with chronic illness. To explore this hypothesis, adolescents aged 11 to 17 years with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) (n = 10), juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) (n = 16), and healthy adolescents (n = 14) were recruited for the study. Measures included the Achenbach parent and youth self report forms, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-II (FACES II), the Children's Depression Rating Scale, and number of days absent from school. The Illness Behavior Encourage

Prevalence of mass social media-induced illness presenting with Tourette-like behavior in Germany between 2019 and 2021.

Starting in 2019, in Germany the first well documented outbreak of mass sociogenic illness induced by social media (mass social media-induced illness; MSMI) occurred presenting with functional Tourette-like behaviors (FTB). This study aimed to provide first data on the prevalence rate of MSMI-FTB in Germany between 2019 and 2021 in the general population. We conducted a large-scale representative population survey in cooperation with the USUMA market and social research institute. Between August and December 2021, n = 2.509 people (mean age: 49.5 years, range: 16-95 years, n = 1.276 females) w

Systematic Review of the Link Between Social Cognition and Suicidal Ideation and Behavior in People With Serious Mental Illness.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: People with serious mental illness (SMI; psychotic and affective disorders with psychosis) are at an increased risk of suicide, yet there is limited research on the correlates of suicide in SMI. Social cognitive impairments are common among people with SMI and several studies have examined social cognition and suicidal ideation (SI) and behavior. This systematic review aims to evaluate the links between various domains of social cognition, SI, and suicidal behavior in SMI. STUDY DESIGN: Electronic databases (PubMed and PsycInfo) were searched through June 2023. Reco

Incidence and antecedents of emergent suicidal ideation and behavior among Veterans with serious mental illness receiving intensive case management.

Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI; i.e., schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, major mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder) are a high-risk group for suicide and little is known about those with emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior. The primary study aim was to examine the six-month incidence and baseline antecedents of emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior (suicidal ideation and/or behavior at six-month follow-up but not at enrollment) in Veterans with SMI enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) community-based treatment program (i.e., Intensive Communit
