Impact of late gadolinium enhancement image acquisition resolution on neural network based automatic scar segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Automatic myocardial scar segmentation from late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) images using neural networks promises an alternative to time-consuming and observer-dependent semi-automatic approaches. However, alterations in data acquisition, reconstruction as well as post-processing may compromise network performance. The objective of the present work was to systematically assess network performance degradation due to a mismatch of point-spread function between training and testing data. METHODS: Thirty-six high-resolution (0.7×0.7×2.0 mm3) LGE k-space datasets were acquired post-m

Evaluation of six night vision enhancement systems: qualitative and quantitative support for intelligent image processing.

OBJECTIVE: An evaluation study was conducted to answer the question of which system properties of night vision enhancement systems (NVESs) provide a benefit for drivers without increasing their workload. BACKGROUND: Different infrared sensor, image processing, and display technologies can be integrated into an NVES to support nighttime driving. Because each of these components has its specific strengths and weaknesses, careful testing is required to determine their best combination. METHOD: Six prototypical systems were assessed in two steps. First, a heuristic evaluation with experts from e

Image quality enhancement of small field-of-view cone-beam CT for image-guided radiotherapy using a structure-preserving cycle-consistent generative adversarial network.

Cone-beam CT (CBCT) is widely used for patient positioning in image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), but full-fan CBCT, which reduces patient dose and acquisition time, suffers from a smaller field of view (FOV) and degraded image quality. To address this limitation, we developed a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based image translation framework, specifically a Cycle-consistent GAN (CycleGAN), to enhance small-FOV CBCT images. The method incorporates dedicated preprocessing and multiple structure-preserving loss functions to mitigate boundary effects caused by truncation of patient anatomy. T

Enhanced-image mammography.

A blurred-mass subtraction technique has been developed for mammography, which enhances small-object contrast and visibility throughout the breast area. The procedure is easy to implement and requires no additional exposure. Perception of low-contrast objects is improved by eliminating extreme light- and dark-image areas. Contrast of structures within certain portions of the breast is increased by compression into the high-contrast portion of the film characteristic curve. Detail visibility is also increased by the edge enhancement produced by this process. This paper describes the enhancement

Trial of novel image-enhancement software to assist medical students in identifying dermoscopic features of melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of melanoma is central to reducing the disease-related burden. The dermatoscope is used by skin cancer clinicians to help identify features of melanoma in a skin lesion. Features can be subtle and identification can be a challenge for early dermoscopists. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the utility of novel image-enhancement software as a possible aid for beginner dermoscopists in identifying melanoma features. The software had previously been developed for optometry for the diagnosis and monitoring of anterior eye conditions. METHODS: Following an introductory lecture

Downstream Task-Inspired Underwater Image Enhancement: A Perception-Aware Study From Dataset Construction to Network Design.

In real underwater environments, downstream image recognition tasks such as semantic segmentation and object detection often face challenges posed by problems like blurring and color inconsistencies. Underwater image enhancement (UIE) has emerged as a promising preprocessing approach, aiming to improve the recognizability of targets in underwater images. However, most existing UIE methods mainly focus on enhancing images for human visual perception, frequently failing to reconstruct high-frequency details that are critical for task-specific recognition. To address this issue, we propose a Down

Structural-Prior Deep Learning Network for Millimeter-Wave Radar Image Enhancement in Autonomous Driving Road Sensing.

Millimeter-wave radar imaging plays an increasingly important role in autonomous driving road perception due to its robustness under adverse weather conditions. However, radar images are inherently contaminated by multiplicative speckle noise, which severely degrades structural continuity, weakens target boundaries, and limits the perception of road scenes and surrounding objects. To address this problem, this paper proposes a structural-prior deep learning network for millimeter-wave radar image enhancement. The proposed framework first introduces an adaptive Otsu-based masking strategy to ex

Role of Macroscopic Image Enhancement in Diagnosis of Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: An Analytical Review.

Early diagnosis of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is of paramount importance to prevent morbidity and mortality due to bladder cancer. Although white light imaging (WLI) cystoscopy has long been considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of bladder cancer, it can miss lesions in a substantial percentage of patients and is very likely to miss carcinoma in situ and dysplasia. Tumor margin detection by WLI can be inaccurate. Moreover, WLI could, sometimes, be inadequate in distinguishing inflammation and malignancy. To improve the diagnostic efficacy of cystoscopy, various optical

Bridging the Scale Gap: A Multi-Scale Feature Enhancement Framework for UAV Aerial Image Object Detection.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery is a core data source for remote sensing interpretation, intelligent transportation, urban monitoring, and disaster assessment, yet its large scale variation, dense object distributions, and complex backgrounds continue to challenge automated detection systems. Transformer-based detectors offer strong global modeling capacity, but existing implementations still suffer from insufficient multi-scale feature interaction, weak discriminative representation, and loss of fine-grained spatial detail, which together limit performance on small and densely arranged

A novel hybrid customized color correction and Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks approach for underwater image enhancement.

Underwater imaging suffers from various challenges such as color distortion, low contrast, and reduced visibility caused by light attenuation. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving the performance of computer vision tasks in underwater environments. Different approaches are proposed in the literature to enhance the underwater images, however the dynamically varying environmental conditions remains challenging. It requires adaptive approach to adjust the color dynamically and to estimate the features. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid approach for underwater image enhancement

Multi-Prior Fusion Transfer Plugin for Adapting In-Air Models to Underwater Image Enhancement and Detection.

Underwater data is inherently scarce and exhibits complex distributions, making it challenging to train high-performance models from scratch. In contrast, in-air models are structurally mature, resource-rich, and offer strong potential for transfer. However, significant discrepancies in visual characteristics and feature distributions between underwater and in-air environments often lead to severe performance degradation when applying in-air models directly. To address this issue, we propose IA2U, a lightweight plugin designed for efficient underwater adaptation without modifying the original
