Building a bridge across the imitation-innovation divide: Children's weighing of cultural and instrumental competence.

We investigated how children weigh different forms of perceived competence (cultural and instrumental) in a potential model when deciding to imitate or innovate an alternative means to obtain a material reward. In Experiment 1, 120 children aged 3-6 years (M age = 4.99 years; 53% female) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions varying a model's demonstrated competence: (1) Culturally Aware, (2) Culturally Unaware, (3) Instrumentally Competent, or (4) Instrumentally Incompetent. Children observed their model perform a task incorporating both causally irrelevant (redundant) and causally

Slowness Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Blind Longitudinal Randomized Controlled Study.

The world often goes too fast for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to process. We tested the therapeutic effectiveness of input slowing in children with ASD. Over 12 months, 12 children with ASD had weekly speech therapy sessions where stimuli were slowly played on a PC, while 11 age- and level-matched children with ASD had speech therapy using real-time stimuli. At the beginning and end of the study, all participants were assessed on communication, imitation, facial emotion recognition, behavior, and face exploration. Whereas communication and facial emotion recognition improved i

Shared and distinct routes in speech and gesture imitation: Evidence from stroke.

Dual-route models of high-level (praxis) actions distinguish between an "indirect" semantic route mediating meaningful gesture imitation, and a "direct" sensory-motor route mediates meaningless gesture imitation. Similarly, dual-route language models distinguish between an indirect route mediating production and repetition of words, and a direct route mediating non-word repetition. Although aphasia and limb apraxia frequently co-occur following left-hemisphere cerebrovascular accident (LCVA), it is unclear which aspects of these functional-neuroanatomic dual-route architectures are shared acro

The Imitation Game in Children With Tourette Syndrome: A Lack of Impulse Control to Mirror Environmental Stimuli.

The learning process in humans requires continuous contacts with environmental stimuli, especially during neurodevelopmental growth. These functions are assisted by the coding potential of mirror neurons to serve social interactions. This ability to learn imitating the observed behavior is no longer necessary during adulthood, and control mechanisms prevent automatic mirroring. However, children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome could encounter coding errors at the level of the mirror neurons system as these cortical regions are themselves the ones affected in the syndrome. Combined with imp

Characteristics of fatal gunshot wounds in the home in Oklahoma: 1982-1983.

Children are a unique group at risk of injury from firearms because of their immaturity, curiosity, and imitative behavior. All unintentional firearm deaths in persons younger than age 20 years that occurred in Oklahoma in 1982 and 1983 were reviewed. There were 32 unintentional deaths from firearms in children from birth to age 19 years. The death rate in rural counties was four times that of urban counties. Twenty-seven deaths (85%) occurred at home, with an adult present in only two cases. The home death rate for males was 5.2 times that of females, with 15- to 19-year-old males most at ris

[Movement and behavioral disorders in anterior cerebral artery territory infarction].

Anterior cerebral artery territory infarction, which affects the medial frontal lobe and anterior part of the corpus callosum, may cause disinhibitory movement and behavioral disorders. The pathophysiology of disinhibitory movement and behavioral disorders was discussed in relation to the role of the frontal lobe in motor control and hemispheric asymmetry of motor functions. Instinctive grasp reaction is the prototype of disjunctive motor disinhibition syndromes, and diagnostic dyspraxia and compulsive manipulation of tools are the most illustrative forms. Diagnostic dyspraxia can be defined a

Fronto-parietal mirror neuron system modeling: Visuospatial transformations support imitation learning independently of imitator perspective.

Although the human mirror neuron system (MNS) is critical for action observation and imitation, most MNS investigations overlook the visuospatial transformation processes that allow individuals to interpret and imitate actions observed from differing perspectives. This problem is not trivial since accurately reaching for and grasping an object requires a visuospatial transformation mechanism capable of precisely remapping fine motor skills where the observer's and imitator's arms and hands may have quite different orientations and sizes. Accordingly, here we describe a novel neural model to in

Elevated mirror neuron system activity in bipolar mania: Evidence from a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

OBJECTIVES: The role of the "mirror neuron system" (MNS) in the pathophysiology of mood disorders is not well studied. Given its posited role in the often-impaired socio-emotional processes like intention detection, empathy, and imitation, we compared putative MNS-activity in patients with bipolar mania and healthy comparison subjects. We also examined the association between putative MNS-activity and hyper-imitative behaviors in patients. METHODS: We studied 39 medication-free individuals diagnosed with mania and 45 healthy comparison subjects. TMS-evoked motor cortical reactivity was measur

Action generation and action perception in imitation: an instance of the ideomotor principle.

We review a series of behavioural experiments on imitation in children and adults that test the predictions of a new theory of imitation. Most of the recent theories of imitation assume a direct visual-to-motor mapping between perceived and imitated movements. Based on our findings of systematic errors in imitation, the new theory of goal-directed imitation (GOADI) instead assumes that imitation is guided by cognitively specified goals. According to GOADI, the imitator does not imitate the observed movement as a whole, but rather decomposes it into its separate aspects. These aspects are hiera

Watching the watchers: aggression observation as a window into the neural mechanisms and computations underlying social learning.

Classic experiments by Albert Bandura more than 50 years ago first illustrated that aggression is shaped not just by innate predisposition but also by social learning. In this work, human observers "mirrored" aggressive behaviors after watching aggressive demonstrators, showing that observation can lead to action imitation. Beyond imitation of aggression itself, aggression observation may be critical for updating internal models of the social world and promoting adaptive behavioral states. As the tendency to watch aggression is both ubiquitous and conserved, this highly ethological behavior is

Voluntary Imitation in Alzheimer's Disease Patients.

Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) primarily manifests as cognitive deficits, the implicit sensorimotor processes that underlie social interactions, such as automatic imitation, seem to be preserved in mild and moderate stages of the disease, as is the ability to communicate with other persons. Nevertheless, when AD patients face more challenging tasks, which do not rely on automatic processes but on explicit voluntary mechanisms and require the patient to pay attention to external events, the cognitive deficits resulting from the disease might negatively affect patients' behavior. The aim of t

Rationally Trust, but Emotionally? The Roles of Cognitive and Affective Trust in Consumer Imitation Intention Toward Influencers in Short-Form Live Commerce.

This study examines how influencer characteristics and short-form video content characteristics shape consumers' imitation intention toward influencers in short-form live commerce. Drawing on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework and social learning theory, this study conceptualizes cognitive trust and affective trust as two internal psychological states linking external stimuli to imitation intention. Imitation intention is defined as consumers' willingness to regard influencers as behavioral reference models and to adopt or follow their consumption choices, suggestions, and recomm

Neuropsychological Evidence for a Motor Working Memory Subsystem Related to Apraxia.

Recent evidence in healthy participants suggests that a motor subcomponent of working memory (mWM) may exist. We investigated whether this mWM is impaired in patients with a motor-dominant left hemisphere (LH) stroke and apraxia. Furthermore, we hypothesized that a deficient mWM contributes to deficits in motor cognition, that is, apraxia, in LH stroke. The study included 52 patients with LH stroke and 25 age-matched controls. Patients were classified into LH stroke patients with and without apraxia based on deficits in gesture imitation and object use. All participants were examined using the

Effect of body-part specificity and meaning in gesture imitation in left hemisphere stroke patients.

Previous studies showed that imitation of finger and hand/arm gestures could be differentially impaired after brain damage. However, so far, the interaction between gesture meaning and body part in imitation deficits has not been fully assessed. In the present study, we aimed at filling this gap by testing 36 unilateral left brain-damaged patients with and without apraxia (20 apraxics), and 29 healthy controls on an imitation task of either finger or hand/arm meaningful (MF) gestures and meaningless (ML) movements, using a large sample of stimuli and controlling for the composition of the expe

Do as I do imitation in a steller sea lion Eumetopias jubatus.

The present study explored whether a well-socialized Steller sea lion named Hama could reproduce similar actions with human demonstrations using the "Do as I do" (DAID) paradigm. Hama had learned 50 types of behaviors, but her social learning ability was unknown. In Study 1, we trained Hama to produce simultaneous DAID responses. After introducing the DAID training, we conducted four tests to confirm Hama's acquisition of demonstrator-matching behavior. We found that Hama successfully acquired the action-matching ability for human actions, not only with three trained actions but also with six

Meaningless imitation in neurodegenerative diseases: Effects of body part, bimanual imitation, asymmetry, and body midline crossing.

Visuo-imitative apraxia has been consistently reported in patients with dementia, yet there have been substantial methodological differences between studies, while multiple, sometimes competing hypotheses have been put forward to explain this syndrome. Our goals were to study specific imitation deficits in groups of patients who have been selected and assigned to a group solely based on clinical criteria. We tested the effects of body part, bimanual imitation, asymmetry of the model, and body midline crossing, in patients with cortical atrophy of the temporal lobes (semantic dementia, SD), fro

Singers show enhanced performance and neural representation of vocal imitation.

Humans have a remarkable capacity to finely control the muscles of the larynx, via distinct patterns of cortical topography and innervation that may underpin our sophisticated vocal capabilities compared with non-human primates. Here, we investigated the behavioural and neural correlates of laryngeal control, and their relationship to vocal expertise, using an imitation task that required adjustments of larynx musculature during speech. Highly trained human singers and non-singer control participants modulated voice pitch and vocal tract length (VTL) to mimic auditory speech targets, while und

Proprioception-based movement goals support imitation and are disrupted in apraxia.

The ability to imitate observed actions serves as an efficient method for learning novel movements and is specifically impaired (without concomitant gross motor impairments) in the neurological disorder of limb apraxia, a disorder common after left hemisphere stroke. Research with apraxic patients has advanced our understanding of how people imitate. However, the role of proprioception in imitation has been rarely assessed directly. Prior work has proposed that proprioceptively sensed body position is transformed into a visual format, supporting the attainment of a desired imitation goal repre

A Neural Basis for Contagious Yawning.

Contagious yawning, in which yawning is triggered involuntarily when we observe another person yawn, is a common form of echophenomena-the automatic imitation of another's words (echolalia) or actions (echopraxia) [1]. The neural basis for echophenomena is unknown; however, it has been proposed that it is linked to disinhibition of the human mirror-neuron system [1-4] and hyper-excitability of cortical motor areas [1]. We investigated the neural basis for contagious yawning using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Thirty-six adults viewed video clips that showed another individual yawnin
