Comparison of serological EIA tests available in Poland, used in diagnostics of Lyme borreliosis: VIDAS Lyme Screen II (LYT II)-bioMérieux (France), Lyme Borreliosis-Dako (Denmark), Borrelia Recombinant-Biomedica (Austria) was carried out in sera of 112 persons: 39 inhabitants of Białowieza area-Lyme borreliosis endemic region, 43 persons with Lyme borreliosis (first of all erythema migrans and neuroborreliosis), 27 healthy persons (control group), 3 persons with serologically confirmed rheumatoid arthritis. In some parasitic infection such as toxoplasmosis, specific IgA is a highly reliable marker of active infection. In bancroftian filariasis, only 10 of 20 (50%) and 3 of 20 (15%) of the microfilaremic patients were positive for IgA anti-Brugia malayi using respectively indirect ELISA and immunocapture ELISA tests. As regard to these low sensitivities, the detection of specific IgA is unlikely to be a useful test for the diagnosis of active Wuchereria bancrofti infection.

Diagnosis of nocardiosis is often delayed because of the frequently nonspecific nature of the illness and because of the long incubation period required to isolate the organism in the microbiology laboratory. A review of some applications of the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) for the serodiagnosis of parasitic infections is presented. Examples are given of applications with trichinellosis, hydatidosis, schistosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, african trypanosomiasis and amoebiasis. ELISA is believed to be a valuable addition to existing serological tools, especially due to its sensitivity and ease of performance.

The cut-off values used in C6 peptide-based enzyme immunoassay (EIA), a widely used test in Lyme borreliosis (LB) serology, have not been thoroughly analysed. Among the key issues that are commonly associated with the development of microarray-based assays are nonspecific binding and diffusion constraints. Here we present a novel strategy addressing both of these challenges simultaneously.
