Solitary plasmacytoma of the bone is believed to be manifestation of the spectrum of diseases presented by the term plasma cell neoplasms and the lesion rarely involves the jaws. A case of solitary plasmacytoma of the mandible is presented, the diagnostic problem is posed and the method of treatment by peripheral osteotomy and radiotherapy discussed.

Miescher, in 1947 and 1951, described peculiar radial nodules in erythema nodosum (EN). They consisted of relatively small histiocytes, radially placed around a central cleft. The authors report a case of amoebic liver abscess regularly increasing in size for a period of 20 days (iterative controls by echography), in spite of a metronidazole treatment. In 16 medical examiner's cases, which were found to be barbiturate-positive by thin-layer chromatographic screening of the liver, blood barbiturate concentrations were determined by gas chromatography. The corresponding vitreous humor samples were screened by the enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique, the EMIT-st serum barbiturate assay. By using the recommended dilution for detecting serum barbiturates, it was possible to detect barbiturates in vitreous humor at a toxic concentration. An immunoperoxidase technique for the localisation of leptospires in sections of formalin fixed paraffin embedded kidney tissue is described. The procedure utilises a two-layered antibody sandwich with rabbit anti-leptospiral immunoglobin. Using antiserum to specific leptospiral serovars the presence and distribution of specific serovar in the tissue could be determined. The clinical application of an enzyme-immunoassay for the determination of the prostate-specific acid phosphatase is reported. By this method 615 plasma probes of patients with prostata adenoma, prostatitis, prostatic cancer and other urological cancer were investigated. Whereas the enzyme-immunoassay showed good correlation with the follow-up of prostatic cancer especially when metastases grow on, the test is not yet sensitive enough to find out early prostatic cancer with reliable accuracy.

High performance liquid chromatograhic (HPLC) and enzyme immunoassay (EMIT) methods for quantitating theophylline concentrations in serum were evaluated. The methods for barbiturate, opiate, methadone, and amphetamine have been modified for use with the American Monitor KDA. The modification, which incorporates automatic correction for endogenous lysozyme activity, was evaluated by comparing results obtained with the KDA for human urine samples containing known amounts of drug(s) with results obtained with the procedure recommended by Syva for the Gilford 3500. BACKGROUND: We compared the Elia CTD Screen (ECS), a fluoroenzymeimmunoassay incorporating 17 human antinuclear antigens (ANA), with indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on Hep-2 cells in order to determine the clinical utility of the ECS in additon to or without IIF.
METHODS: We examined 1708 consecutive serum samples submitted for ANA testing using the ECS and IIF in parallel. Positive screen results were further examined by quantitative fluoroenzymeimmunoassays and/or immunoblots for antibody identification.
