The immunoglobulin M (IgM)-associated peripheral neuropathies (PN) are a heterogeneous group of disorders representing most paraproteinemic neuropathy cases. They are associated with IgM monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or Waldenström macroglobulinemia. Establishing a causal link between a paraprotein and neuropathy can be challenging but is necessary to adopt an appropriate therapeutic approach. We report a case of an invisible monoclonal IgM on the profile of the serum electrophoresis carried out by the Paragon CZE 2000 system. We evaluated a method for determination of human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) immunoglobulin M (IgM) by CLIA, and analyzed its clinical value in patients with infectious mononucleosis. Nephelometric immunoassays were developed for human IgG, IgA, and IgM quantitation in B-lymphocytes culture media. They allowed measurement of immunoglobulin (Ig) levels over a broad range of concentrations with good accuracy and precision. The kinetics of Ig production in B-lymphocyte cultures was followed and the mean amount of each Ig was determined in six different samples after three days of culture. The nephelometric immunoassays reported here could be used to study, in vitro, the influence of various molecules (inhibitory or amplifying effect) on B-lymphocytes' functional capacities.

The presence of immunoglobulins G, A and M was studied in human dental pulps using a quantitative method of radial immunodiffusion. Valid data on the amounts of IgG, IgA and IgM were obtained on the basis of measured concentrations of immunoglobulins in each pulp sample and their correlation with total protein concentrations. A comparison was made of virus-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgA, and IgG detected by capture or indirect enzyme immunoassay in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Japanese encephalitis. The IgM capture enzyme immunoassay was more sensitive than assays for other isotypes of viral antibody; IgM was detected in 75% of specimens collected less than or equal to 4 days after the onset of illness. Specific IgA was detected in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid; however, IgA levels were significantly lower than IgM levels.

In 70 cases of ischaemic brain strokes and 25 cases serving as a reference group the levels of immunoglobulin A, M, G were determined in the cerebrospinal fluid. The obtained results demonstrated that in the studied group the mean levels of IgA and IgM and total protein were increased in the cerebrospinal fluid. The value of IgG was unchanged in relation to the control group. The rise in the mean levels of IgA and IgM was not always parallel with the rise in the total protein level. The authors discuss the importance of blood-brain barrier. Its role seems plausible in cases with raised levels

Results of determination of the quantitative content of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) demonstrated chronic typhoid carrier state to be a dynamic process characterized by high IgA and IgG indices which began to form as early as the acute period. A complex of clinico-laboratory indices permitted to detect the latent phase of the carrier state among the persons who sustained typhoid fever within the range of 30%; this confirmed the statement of a number of investigators put forward earlier that the true number of carriers was much greater than that recorded.

Sera from humans with serologically confirmed eastern equine encephalitis, western equine encephalitis, Pogosta (Ockelbo), Mayaro, Ross River, and chikungunya virus infections were tested by immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody capture enzyme immunoassay. Diagnostically useful IgM antibody titers were detected, and selected sera with high IgM antibody titers were tested for IgM antibody with nine heterologous alphaviruses. The results provide evidence for the complex specificity of IgM antibody and indicate the usefulness of this test in both individual cases and epidemic situations.

The appearance and persistence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies in postnatal rubella infections were studied by employing a solid-phase radioimmunoassay test. Altogether, 222 serial serum specimens from 51 patients with acute rubella infection were tested. Both IgG and IgM antibodies developed rapidly and appeared in all patients within 4 days after the onset of rash.
