The recovery of phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash (SSA) is assumed to be economical. Transformation from non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) to apatite phosphorus (AP), which has a higher bioavailability and more extensive industrial applications, was studied at 750-950°C by sewage sludge incineration and model compound incineration with a calcium oxide (CaO) additive. Thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry analysis and X-ray diffraction measurements were used to analyze the reactions between NAIP with CaO and crystallized phases in SSA. High temperatures stimulate

Process, combustion and fuel parameters were varied to elucidate factors that substantially affect the formation and emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) arising from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration. The combustion conditions were varied by changing the: freeboard temperatures; quench time in the post-combustion zone; fuel load; chlorine and copper levels in the fuel; and the water, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and oxygen levels in the combustion gases. The study was performed using a 5kW laboratory-scale fluidized-bed rea

An extensive investigation was conducted to understand polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and furan (PCDD/F) formation mechanisms and their relationship with other organic compounds. PCDD/F, chlorophenols (CIPhs), chlorobenzenes (CIBzs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were analyzed in the boiler exit gases of a field-scale municipal solid waste incinerator under various operating conditions. The TEQ value and the concentration of target compounds changed with incinerator operating conditions. Low mass PAHs and 246-triCIPh increased dramatically during s

The primary objective of the present work is to use additives to extend the sulfation reaction of the calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) used to control SO2 emission from incineration processes. There are two reasons for adding surfactants (surface-active agent): (1) to provide an appropriate dispersion of the Ca(OH)2', thus preventing particle agglomeration due to humidity; (2) to alter the sulfation reaction environment by adsorbing heterogeneous materials on the surface of the Ca(OH)2 to extend the adsorption equilibrium. A dry scrubber integrated with a fabric filter was employed to study the eff

Incineration bottom ash fines (≤ 125 μm) are known to contain potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and inorganic salts. The most abundant PTEs in the fines were Zn (0.5%), Cu (0.25%), Pb (0.12%), Mn (0.08%) and Cr (0.03%). The systematic quantification of the mineral phases and PTEs associated with them was performed with a multimethod approach using quantitative XRD, phase mapping with PhAse Recognition and Characterization (PARC) software and microprobe analysis. The mineral phases in the fines can be categorized as follows: 1) residual phases (e.g., quartz), 2) incineration phases (e.g., melil

Teeth exposed to thermal stress can shed light on the identification of incinerated individuals and on the circumstances of the fire. Changes in the color of burned teeth can provide information on structural changes and the temperature of exposure. The objective of this study was to correlate color modifications with the concentration of human DNA in teeth burned at different temperatures. Spectrophotometry was used to measure the color of 40 teeth heated at temperatures of 100, 200, and 400°C for 60 min. DNA was extracted by phenol-chloroform extraction and quantified by real-time quantitati

The municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) in Taiwan generate about 300,000 tons of fly ash annually, which is mainly composed of calcium and silicon compounds, and has the potential for recycling. However, some heavy metals are present in the MSWI fly ash, and before recycling, they need to be removed or reduced to make the fly ash non-hazardous. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to use a hydrocyclone for the separation of the components of the MSWI fly ash in order to obtain the recyclable portion. The results show that chloride salts can be removed from the fly ash during the h

This paper concerns the incineration of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) using the ferrospinel catalyst MnFe2O4. It covers the preparation of the ferrospinel catalyst, the screening of catalytic activity, catalytic incineration testing, and 72-hr decay testing of the catalyst. The experimental results of catalyst screening reveal that the Mn/Fe catalyst is the best of five prepared catalysts (chromium/iron [Cr/Fe], manganese/iron [Mn/Fe], zinc/iron [Zn/Fe], nickel/iron [Ni/Fe], and pure magnetite [Fe3O4]). In tests of the catalytic incineration system used to convert IPA, 98% conversion was obtained at

There are hazardous substances such as chloride salts and heavy metals in the municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (WIFA). During thermal treatment, the concentrated chlorides promote the volatilization of heavy metals, increasing the ecological risk. The water washing method is also employed as a pre-treatment for WIFA, but a substantial volume of wastewater with high chloride content is produced that poses challenges for effective treatment. This study integrates chemical stabilization with heat treatment method and suggests the utilization of a calcium aluminum oxide-mayenite (CA) for

In order to explore the effect of CaO on the ecological risk of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in Oily sludge (OS), the incineration experiments of OS with and without calcium oxide (CaO) additive were carried out respectively in a horizontal tube furnace at the temperature ranging from 800 °C to 1000 °C. Furthermore, the ecological risk based on Risk Assessment Code (RAC) of Cr, Cu and Zn in OS, bottom ash from OS incineration (OSA) and bottom ash from OS incineration in the presence of CaO additive (OSA-CaO) were investigated in this work. The results showed that most of the Cr and

HCl and SO2 emission is one of the major concerns related to municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI). In this study, a material flow analysis model was developed to estimate the HCl and SO2 concentrations in the MSWI flue gases (FGs), and their concentrations in the full-scale MSWI were monitored. The calculated concentrations of HCl and SO2 in the FG were 770-1300 mg/Nm3 and 150-640 mg/Nm3, respectively, in close agreement with the monitored values. More than 99% of Cl and 92% of S from the FG were captured into solid residues by the air pollution control (APC) systems. Moreover, since only

Traditional pollution control technologies are able to capture oxidized forms of mercury to some extent; however, they show low efficiency for the control of elemental mercury emissions. This study developed a novel mercury removal technology: injection of sodium tetrasulfide (Na2S4) dissolved in the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution in the spray-dryer system. The effects of flue gas temperature and Na2S4 level in flue gas on the mercury removal efficiency were investigated. Na2S4 was decomposed into Na2S (S2-) and elemental S (S0), which reacted with HgCl2 and elemental Hg (Hg0), and HgS was t

The conventional mass burn systems for municipal solid waste (MSW) emit large amount of acidic gases and dioxins as well as heavy metals due to the large excess air ratio. Additionally, the final process residues, bottom ash with potential leachability of heavy metals and fly ash with high level of heavy metals and dioxins, also constitute a major environmental problem. To deal with these issues more effectively, a novel MSW incineration technology was developed in this study. MSW drying, pyrolysis, gasification, incineration, and ash vitrification were achieved as a spectrum of combustion by

Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste characterized by a high concentration of heavy metals and a high soluble fraction of salts. It is commonly stabilised by the addition of cement. This paper proposes an alternative method of solidification/stabilisation involving room-temperature alkali activation as a low-carbon, cement-free solution. This industrially feasible method retains a waste content of over 50 wt% in the wet mix and uses the low concentrations of NaOH and sodium silicates to activate the material by adding Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GG

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash is an environmentally harmful solid waste that cannot be recycled without pre-treatment. The chloride content in bottom ash (BA) is a major obstacle that restricts its application as secondary building materials. Here, the chemical speciation of the chlorides in BA is systematically studied with multiple analytical techniques, i.e., quantitative XRD, microanalysis and XPS. In addition to halite (NaCl), several chloride-rich minerals are present in BA. These phases are hydrous metal oxides, ettringite, decomposed hydration products (C4A3) and

This paper discusses the possibility of using the process of geopolymerization to immobilize ash from municipal waste incineration plants. Fly ash used in the related research came from the same incineration plant, one of the biggest in Poland. The examination was conducted on the waste samples labeled as 190107* and 190113*. The comparison included such properties of waste as chemical composition, dioxin content, and size and morphology of particles. The waste was solidified in geopolymer matrix made from (i) fly ash from the combustion of bituminous coal or (ii) metakaolin. The waste percent

Regulation to control air emissions of toxic organic compounds require the collection and analysis of effluent gas from low level sources such as hazardous waste incinerators. The standard SW-846 Method specifies the use of Tenax and Tenax/charcoal adsorbent traps for collection of volatile organics from incinerators. This study evaluates passivated stainless steel canisters as an alternative to adsorbent traps to eliminate some of the problems associated with adsorbent sampling. Initially the stability of 18 nonpolar, volatile organic compounds was determined in Summa-treated stainless steel
