Concurrent validity, internal consistency and responsiveness of the Portuguese version of the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) in women after stress urinary incontinence surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the concurrent validity, internal consistency and responsiveness of King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) in patients who underwent sling procedures for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective open label multicenter study in 4 tertiary referral centers. Sixty-eight female patients were enrolled with urodynamically diagnosed urinary stress incontinence. Patients were treated using surgical procedures, mostly (73%) with the synthetic sling procedure, which has been considered one of the gold standard methods for the trea

The standard 1-hour pad test: does it have any value in clinical practice?

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether self subjective assessment of urinary incontinence as perceived by female patients could replace the standard 1-hour pad test in clinical practice. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: District General Hospital, South West of England. METHODS: Ninety women awaiting surgical treatment for urodynamic stress incontinence were recruited. They underwent 160 pad tests; on each test women were asked to classify themselves on a four point scale into one category (0: totally continent to urine, 1: mild/occasional urinary incontinence (

[Diaper dermatitis. Classification, occurrence, causes, prevention and treatment].

Diaper dermatitis is a multifactorial dermatological disorder characterized by inflammation in the diaper area. About half of all babies and old people in need of care experience light dermatitis, while 20% have moderate and 5% severe dermatitis. Friction from the diaper, occlusion, irritation from faeces, ammonia, detergents, candida albicans, proteolytic and lipolytic enzymes and moisture deposited on the epidermis cause damage at the stratum corneum layer of the epidermis. Diaper dermatitis is caused by a combination of mostly irritant effects. Compounds that infiltrate the skin can aggrava

Factors Underlying Choice and Change of Absorbent Incontinence Products in Women With Urinary Incontinence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in women. For up to 77%, the use of absorbent continence products (pads) is central to management. Pad changes are common and reasons for change are not fully described. We hypothesized that women change their pads for many reasons other than wetness and at saturation levels well below advertised capacity. METHODS: A sample of 11 community dwelling women aged 65-95 (mean 78.1, SD 8.2) years was included. Participants completed a bespoke questionnaire on satisfaction with their current pads; UI severity and quality of life were meas

Feasibility of measuring urethral pressure during female midurethral slings: Case report.

RATIONALE: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to the involuntary leakage of urine when abdominal pressure increases. Midurethral slings (MUS) have become the main surgical method for treating SUI, but no quantitative standard for the degree of sling tightness during operation exists. We achieved this quantitative measurement using ambulatory urodynamic equipment. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 49-year-old woman presented to our hospital with intermittent urine leakage. Five pads were used daily to keep the vulva dry. The preoperative urethral pressure profilometry (UPP) showed that maximum urethra

Urinary continence after radical prostatectomy: predictive factors of recovery after 1 year of surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical prognosis of incontinence and to determine the predictors for further recovery of urinary continence in patients not achieving urinary continence within 1 year after radical prostatectomy. METHODS: A total of 708 patients were evaluated regarding urinary continence status at 1 year after surgery from a prospectively maintained radical prostatectomy database. Of these, 73 (10.3%) did not recover urinary continence within 1 year after surgery. For these patients, incontinence status and the number of pads for urinary control were assessed serially. RESULTS:

Factors influencing intact skin in women with incontinence using absorbent products: results of a cross-sectional, comparative study.

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a common problem in elderly incontinent people. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted to examine and compare properties of intact skin on the buttocks and subumbilicus area in elderly people wearing absorbent products and to identify pad environment factors that affect skin properties. Study participants included 45 elderly (age range: 68 to 103 years) female residents of one nursing home who were incontinent of feces and urine (dual incontinence group--DIG, n = 35) or feces only (fecal incontinence group--FIG, n= 10). Skin pH
