BACKGROUND: In Western countries, leptospirosis is uncommon and mainly occurs in farmers and individuals indulging in water-related activities. In tropical countries, leptospirosis can be up to 1000 times more frequent and risk factors for this often severe disease may differ.
METHODS: We conducted a one-year population-based matched case-control study to investigate the frequency and associated factors of leptospirosis in the entire population of Seychelles.
RESULTS: A total of 75 patients had definite acute leptospirosis based on microagglutination test (MAT) and polymerase chain reaction

Understanding the role of marine vegetation in shaping coastal carbon dynamics and supporting productivity is essential for robust ecological and socio-economic assessments and effective policy development. Our study employed stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate the importance of seagrass carbon as a source of nutrition to important invertebrates spanning different trophic levels (i.e., planktonic, filter-feeding and grazing) around the island of Mauritius. Isotope mixing models confirmed high levels of assimilation of seagrass carbon across three trophic levels (dietary prop

In recent decades, international and national regulations have contributed to slowing population declines and promoting the stabilization and recovery of marine turtle populations. Numerous studies have highlighted the intricate interconnections between sea turtles, particularly juveniles, and their surrounding ecosystems, underscoring the critical importance of long-term monitoring in marine conservation strategies. Aligned with conservation efforts in the region, this work provides a high-resolution dataset on the diving behavior of juvenile green and hawksbill turtles from four sites: Reuni

A cross sectional serological survey of arboviral infections in humans was conducted on the three islands of the Union of Comoros, Indian Ocean, in order to test a previously suggested contrasted exposure of the three neighboring islands to arthropod-borne epidemics. Four hundred human sera were collected on Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli) and Ndzouani (Anjouan), and were tested by ELISA for IgM and/or IgG antibodies to Dengue (DENV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), Rift Valley fever (RVFV), West Nile (WNV), Tick borne encephalitis (TBEV) and Yellow fever (YFV) viruses and for neutralizing antib

A novel antifungal protein produced by the fungal strain Penicillium citrinum W1, which was isolated from a Southwest Indian Ocean sediment sample, was purified and characterized. The culture supernatant of P. citrinum W1 inhibited the mycelial growth of some plant pathogenic fungi. After saturation of P. citrinum W1 culture supernatants with ammonium sulfate and ion-exchange chromatography, an antifungal protein (PcPAF) was purified. The N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis showed that PcPAF might be an unknown antifungal protein. PcPAF displayed antifungal activity against Trichoderma vir

Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread zoonoses worldwide, with highest incidence reported on tropical islands. Recent investigations carried out in a One-Health framework have revealed a wide diversity of pathogenic Leptospira lineages on the different islands of Western Indian Ocean carried out by a large diversity of mammal reservoirs, including domestic and wild fauna. Using golden Syrian hamsters as a model of acute infection, we studied the virulence of Leptospira interrogans, L. mayottensis, and L. borgpetersenii isolates obtained from rats, tenrecs, and bats, respectively. The scleractinian coral Porites lutea, an important reef-building coral on western Indian Ocean reefs (WIO), is affected by a newly-reported white syndrome (WS) the Porites white patch syndrome (PWPS). Histopathology and culture-independent molecular techniques were used to characterise the microbial communities associated with this emerging disease. Microscopy showed extensive tissue fragmentation generally associated with ovoid basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates. Results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed a high variability between bacterial communities associated with PWP

The study investigates the role of tropical cyclones (TCs) in dissolved oxygen (DO) distributions and Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) variability in the northern Indian Ocean (IO) for 2019-2022. The analyses revealed under the influence TCs the thickness of OMZ varied between ∼610-753 m and ∼ 922-1179 m at different locations in Bay of Bengal (BoB) and Arabian Sea (AS) respectively. The OMZ thickness during TC Sitrang was >740 m unlike during TCs Fani and Yaas which occurred in post monsoon season. Strong near-surface wind stress on right side of TC track causes thickening of OMZ after the cyclone.

The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global concern, and the islands of the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) are not exempt from this phenomenon. As strategic crossroads between Southern Africa and the Indian subcontinent, these islands are constantly threatened by the importation of multidrug-resistant bacteria from these regions. In this systematic review, our aim was to assess the epidemiological situation of AMR in humans in the SWIO islands, focusing on bacterial species listed as priority by the World Health Organization. Specifically, we examined Enterobacterales, Acinet

A thorough knowledge of genotypic and phenotypic variations (e.g., virulence, resistance to antimicrobial compounds) in bacteria causing plant disease outbreaks is key for optimizing disease surveillance and management. Using a comprehensive strain collection, tandem repeat-based genotyping techniques and pathogenicity assays, we characterized the diversity of X. citri pv. citri from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region. Most strains belonged to the prevalent lineage 1 pathotype A that has a wide host range among rutaceous species. We report the first occurrence of genetically unrelated,

We report on six patients (five unpublished patients) from the Indian Ocean islands, with coarse face, cleft lip or palate, eye anomalies, brachytelephalangy, nail hypoplasia, various malformations (genitourinary or cerebral), abnormal electroencephalograms with impaired neurological examination and lethal outcome. Massive polyhydramnios was noted in the third trimester of pregnancy and neonatal growth was normal or excessive. The combination of the features is consistent with the diagnosis of Fryns syndrome (FS) without congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Besides chromosomal aberrations and micr

Lobomycosis is a chronic mycotic disease of the skin and subdermal tissues caused by the yeast-like organism Lacazia loboi, which affects humans and Delphinidae. Cases of lobomycosis and lobomycosis-like disease (LLD), a disease very similar to lobomycosis but for which a histological diagnostic is missing, have been reported in small cetaceans from the Americas and Europe. Here we report on LLD in Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins Tursiops aduncus from the tropical lagoon of Mayotte, between Mozambique and Madagascar. From July 2004 to June 2008, boat surveys were conducted in Mayotte waters.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, Mayotte, a French department in the Mozambique channel, experienced a long drought that led to potable water restrictions. Although the French vaccination schedule makes polio vaccination compulsory for children, the large proportion of migrants on the island coupled with the water crisis raised concerns about the establishment of poliovirus transmission chains. Therefore, a surveillance was implemented to detect polioviruses in sewage sampled in the two main wastewater treatment plants.
METHODS: Samples collected from September 2023 through January 2024 were processed fo

Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) are an important component of community-based marine conservation in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), yet persistent gender inequalities in governance, livelihoods and access to resources constrain their inclusiveness and long-term effectiveness. Women remain underrepresented in decision-making despite their substantial contributions to coastal and marine livelihoods. This perspective paper examines how gendered power relations shape participation and influence in LMMA governance across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar and Comoros, and proposes a stra
