The forsaken mental health of the Indigenous Peoples - a moral case of outrageous exclusion in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is neglected in most parts of the world. For the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America, the plight is even more severe as there are no specific mental health services designed for them altogether. Given the high importance of mental health for general health, the status quo is unacceptable. Lack of research on the subject of Indigenous Peoples' mental health means that statistics are virtually unavailable. To illustrate their mental health status, one can nonetheless point to the high rates of poverty and extreme poverty in their communities, overcrowded housing, illite

Centering Historical Oppression in Prevention Research with Indigenous Peoples: Differentiating Substance Use, Mental Health, Family, and Community Outcomes.

The purpose of this pilot study was to understand how historical oppression relates to changes in outcomes for people who participate in the culturally grounded Weaving Healthy Families (WHF) program (i.e., alcohol and drug use, symptoms of anxiety, parenting practices, and communal mastery [CM]). This nonexperimental and longitudinal design used repeated measures regression analysis and generalized estimating equations (GEE) to examine postintervention changes according to reported levels of historical oppression among 24 participants in eight families. How do postintervention changes differ

Population Heterogeneity of Diabetes in Indigenous Peoples of the Americas: A Systematic Scoping Review of the Existing Literature.

Background: In the Americas, the number of people living with diabetes is expected to rise from 92 million in 2024 to 120 million by 2050. Indigenous populations may experience distinct biological, environmental, and sociocultural risk factors; however, they are often treated as a homogeneous group in epidemiological research, and consolidated evidence on diabetes prevalence across diverse Indigenous populations remains limited. This scoping review examines the prevalence of diabetes among Indigenous populations in the Americas. Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a systemat

Type 1 diabetes youth with disordered eating: Is there a disproportionate impact on ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples?

Adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus consistently have suboptimal glycaemic control and worse outcomes, and this is especially true for adolescents from indigenous communities and ethnic minorities. It is increasingly recognised that disordered eating is common in adolescents and likely causes a disproportionate impact on glycaemic outcomes and psychological morbidity. Eating disorders may be even more common in indigenous and ethnic minority populations and be another reason why it is harder to achieve recommended glycaemic targets in this group. In this viewpoint, we explore the issues

Correlates of homeless episodes among indigenous people.

This study reports the correlates of homeless episodes among 873 Indigenous adults who are part of an ongoing longitudinal study on four reservations in the Northern Midwest and four Canadian First Nation reserves. Descriptive analyses depict differences between those who have and have not experienced an episode of homelessness in their lifetimes. Multivariate analyses assess factors associated with a history of homeless episodes at the time of their first interview and differentiate correlates of "near homelessness" (i.e., doubling up) and "homeless episodes" (periods of actual homelessness).

Long-distance travel for birthing among Indigenous and non-Indigenous pregnant people in Canada.

BACKGROUND: For Indigenous Peoples in Canada, birthing on or near traditional territories in the presence of family and community is of foundational cultural and social importance. We aimed to evaluate the association between Indigenous identity and distance travelled for birth in Canada. METHODS: We obtained data from the Maternity Experiences Survey, a national population-based sample of new Canadian people aged 15 years or older who gave birth (defined as mothers) and were interviewed in 2006-2007. We compared Indigenous with non-Indigenous Canadian-born mothers and adjusted for geographic

Operationalizing Co-Design in Exercise Interventions with Indigenous Peoples in Australia: Development and Cultural Adaptation of the PrIDE Tools.

Indigenous Australians experience a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. While clinician-led, community-based exercise programs are effective in general populations, limited peer-reviewed evidence is available describing culturally adapted exercise interventions with Indigenous Australians that transparently reports governance, cultural adaptation, and theoretical design. This paper reports the co-design and development of tools for the Preventing Indigenous Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes through Exercise (PrIDE) study, an adaptation of the Beat
