We report on the demonstration of nonspecific accumulation of indium-111 capromab pendetide (ProstaScint) in neurofibromas in a patient with a rising prostate-specific antigen level after prostatectomy. Although the immunoconjugate is targeted to a specific membrane antigen present in human prostate carcinoma, nonspecific uptake can occur in other entities. Indium-111 capromab pendetide scintigraphy is a valuable diagnostic tool that should always be interpreted within the context of the clinical history and the laboratory and radiologic findings to avoid misinterpretation.

Vessels from normal pigs and pigs with severe von Willebrand disease were exposed for up to 30 minutes to both nonanticoagulated and heparinized blood from normal pigs in an ex vivo perfusion system. Colonic transit scintigraphy, a method for quantitatively evaluating the movement of the fecal stream in vivo, was employed to evaluate colonic transit in the cat. Scintigraphy was performed in duplicate in five cats and repeated four times in one cat. After instillation of an 111In marker into the cecum through a surgically implanted silicone cecostomy tube, colonic movement of the instillate was quantitated for 24 h using gamma scintigraphy. Antegrade and retrograde motion of radionuclide was observed. The cecum and ascending colon emptied rapidly, with a half-emptying time of 1.68 +/- 0.56

A new method for diagnosing cerebral cysticercosis by means of specific radioimmunoscan is described. The method has been evaluated in 24 patients with encouraging results. The technique involves a single intravenous injection followed by brain scanning and thus far has been entirely nontoxic. The accuracy of the scan was confirmed in 6 patients by surgical removal of lesions that coincided in location and number with the diagnostic scan of the parasites.

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of two (111)In-labeled DTPA-peptide conjugates (DTPA-MA and DTPA-BA). Immunoscintigraphy with radiolabelled anti-carcinoembryonic antigen monoclonal antibody was performed on 21 patients with active small-cell lung cancer. A case of focal decreased skeletal uptake with In-111 labeled white blood cells representing Paget's disease is reported. Although uncommon, other causes for skeletal photon deficient areas using In-111 white blood cells have been described. A technique is presented for the bedside performance of radionuclide cisternography in the preterm neonate. Using a portable gamma camera, with a low energy, converging collimator, high quality diagnostic images were obtained in 31 infants, following the lumbar subarachnoid injection of 100 micro Ci In-111 DTPA. The technique is safe, and provides valuable information about CSF dynamics unavailable by any other method.

We investigated the distribution of 111In-pentetreotide (Octreoscan, Mallinckrodt) in nude mice xenografted with a human neuroblastoma cell line (SKLAN, derived from the LAN1 line). These cells develop into solid tumours in nude mice and can be grafted repeatedly in grafts of 10(8) cells. The coupling of hematologic data with radionuclide studies of the spleen has provided information as to the functioning of the organ in a variety of disease states. The major radionuclide studies have been presented in terms of the type of information derivable and the various conditions that can result in fairly similar image presentations. By utilizing the imaging results in conjunction with other available data, a more coherent view emerges of the role of the spleen.

Fe-52 scintigraphy was used to confirm extramedullary hematopoiesis in a patient with beta-thalassemia and intrathoracic masses. Imaging was performed on a standard gamma camera with a high-energy collimator. Tc-99m labeled tin colloid and In-111 chloride scintigraphy failed to reveal uptake by the masses. The exclusion of malignancy obviated the need for invasive diagnostic measures.
