Effects of infant health on family food insecurity: evidence from two U.S. birth cohort studies.

Extremely little is known about the effects of health on food insecurity despite strong associations between the two and a theoretical basis for this avenue of inquiry. This study uses data from two national birth cohort studies in the U.S., the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (N = ∼9400) from 2001 to 2003 and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2458) from 1998 to 2003, to estimate the effects of poor infant health on child and household food insecurity and explore the potential buffering effects of public programs that provide food, healthcare, and cash assista

Solid food refusal as the presenting sign of vitamin B12 deficiency in a breastfed infant.

UNLABELLED: Dietary vitamin B(12) (vitB(12)) deficiency, although common in the elderly, is rare in childhood. We report on an exclusively breastfed 8-month-old infant, presenting with persistent refusal of solid foods. Three months later, developmental regression and failure to thrive led to the diagnosis of vitB(12) deficiency, as a consequence of a subclinical pernicious anaemia with vitB(12) deficiency in the mother. Treating the infant with parenteral vitB(12) induced prompt recovery including acceptance of weaning food. CONCLUSION: This case illustrates refusal of complementary foods as

Food-induced anaphylaxis in infants, as compared to toddlers and preschool children in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The literature includes scarce data on infants with food-induced anaphylaxis (FIA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of the patients diagnosed with FIA aged 0-6 years between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: During the study period, there were 451 instances of FIA in 314 patients, of which 175 (38.8%) occurred in 160 infants (50.9%). The median (IQR) age of infants was 7 months (6-9 months) with a male predominance (67.5%), of which 7.5% had multiple instances (≥2) and 60% atopic dermatitis. The most common triggers were cow's milk (51.4%), tree nuts (1

Healthy infants harbor intestinal bacteria that protect against food allergy.

There has been a striking generational increase in life-threatening food allergies in Westernized societies1,2. One hypothesis to explain this rising prevalence is that twenty-first century lifestyle practices, including misuse of antibiotics, dietary changes, and higher rates of Caesarean birth and formula feeding have altered intestinal bacterial communities; early-life alterations may be particularly detrimental3,4. To better understand how commensal bacteria regulate food allergy in humans, we colonized germ-free mice with feces from healthy or cow's milk allergic (CMA) infants5. We found

Early additional food and fluids for healthy breastfed full-term infants.

BACKGROUND: Health organisations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months. However, the addition of other fluids or foods before six months is common in many countries. Recently, research has suggested that introducing solid food at around four months of age while the baby continues to breastfeed is more protective against developing food allergies compared to exclusive breastfeeding for six months. Other studies have shown that the risks associated with non-exclusive breastfeeding are dependent on the type of additional food or fluid given. Given this background we felt it was importa

Vitamin D insufficiency is associated with challenge-proven food allergy in infants.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence has shown that pediatric food allergy is more prevalent in regions further from the equator, suggesting that vitamin D insufficiency may play a role in this disease. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of vitamin D status in infantile food allergy. METHODS: A population sample of 5276 one-year-old infants underwent skin prick testing to peanut, egg, sesame, and cow's milk or shrimp. All those with a detectable wheal and a random sample of participants with negative skin prick test results attended a hospital-based food challenge clinic. Blood samples were

Formulas containing hydrolysed protein for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants.

BACKGROUND: Allergies and food reactions are common and may be associated with foods including adapted cow's milk formula. Formulas containing hydrolysed proteins have been used to treat infants with allergy or food intolerance. However, it is unclear whether hydrolysed formula can be advocated for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants without evidence of allergy or food intolerance. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of feeding hydrolysed formulas on allergy and food intolerance in infants and children compared to adapted cow's milk or human breast milk. If hydrolysed formul

Pesticide content of infant formulae and weaning foods available in New Zealand.

A survey of the pesticide content of 25 commercially available infant formulae and 30 weaning foods available in New Zealand was undertaken in 1996. It included a representative mixture of imported and New Zealand manufactured infant foods. Three different pesticide screening techniques were used: a high-sensitivity organochlorine screen was carried out on all infant formulae, while a multiresidue screen (organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, synthetic pyrethroids, carbamate pesticides, fungicides and herbicides), and a specific screen for dithiocarbamate fungicides were both carried

Passage of food antigens into circulation of breast-fed infants with atopic dermatitis.

We have selected 13 babies presenting with atopic dermatitis during exclusive breast feeding. After evaluation of reaginic reaction, we detected beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) in breast milk and babies sera before and after maternal elimination diet and after maternal challenge. beta-Lactoglobulin was present only in the sera of infants ingesting breast milk containing BLG. We have seen reaginic reactions to cow's milk in seven babies. The maternal elimination diet improved eczema in 11/13 infants, maternal challenge worsened atopic dermatitis in 9/9 children. We demonstrated the transport of food a

Diagnosis of food allergies and intolerances in the study of prophylaxis and control groups in infants.

There is no definitive way to distinguish a true atopic IgE-mediated sign or symptom due to food from an intolerance reaction due to irritation, enzyme deficiency or other idiosyncratic cause. The presence of IgE-specific antibody against a food as demonstrated by an immediate wheal and flare skin test reaction or a positive RAST is presumptive evidence of a cause and effect relationship. The younger the patient, the more likely a positive RAST or skin test is to be significantly causally related to the illness. Nevertheless, in almost 100 infants at 4 months of age, five were observed to have

Household food insecurity, nutrient intakes and BMI in New Zealand infants.

OBJECTIVE: The first year of life is a critical period when nutrient intakes can affect long-term health outcomes. Although household food insecurity may result in inadequate nutrient intakes or a higher risk of obesity, no studies have comprehensively assessed nutrient intakes of infants from food insecure households. This study aimed to investigate how infant nutrient intakes and BMI differ by household food security. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the First Foods New Zealand study of infants aged 7-10 months. Two 24-h diet recalls assessed nutrient intakes. 'Usual' intakes were calcul

Nurturing Infants to Prevent Atopic Dermatitis and Food Allergies: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) at a young age often precedes the development of food allergies. Although AD affects millions of infants worldwide, prenatal and postnatal risk factors, and their association with the development of food allergies later on, are not fully elucidated. This study seeks to investigate AD epidemiology in infancy and its risk factors, examining early-life factors (both prenatal and postnatal) that could contribute to the later development of food allergies. METHODS: Between January 2019 and December 2019, 501 infants were included in this prospective cohort study.

[Prevalence of food allergy in Icelandic infants during first year of life].

OBJECTIVE: This study is a part of EuroPrevall, an EU-funded European food allergy project. The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of food allergy in Icelandic infants during their first year of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Infants (n=1,341) were followed prospectively from birth to 12 months of age. Questionnaires were obtained at birth and 12 months. Children with symptoms of possible food allergy were assessed with a skin-prick test (SPT) and specific IgE. Food allergy was confirmed with a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC). RESULTS: Out of 170 symptomatic children 44

Modular Formula: an approach to management of infants with specific or complex food intolerances.

Modular Formula is a dietary preparation for use in treating infants with complex malabsorptive disorders and for weaning infants from total parenteral nutrition. With this formula the physician can alter the quality of the various nutrients normally fed to infants as well as concentrations of those nutrients. Infants who cannot tolerate existing proprietary formulas will often thrive with the judicious use of this flexible formula. Modular Formula provides the clinician with a useful aid in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diarrhea of infancy.

Immunologic features of infants with milk or egg allergy enrolled in an observational study (Consortium of Food Allergy Research) of food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Immune features of infants with food allergy have not been delineated. OBJECTIVES: We sought to explore the basic mechanisms responsible for food allergy and identify biomarkers, such as skin prick test (SPT) responses, food-specific IgE levels, and mononuclear cell responses, in a cohort of infants with likely milk/egg allergy at increased risk of peanut allergy. METHODS: Infants aged 3 to 15 months were enrolled with a positive SPT response to milk or egg and either a corresponding convincing clinical history of allergy to milk or egg or moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. Design and preparation of market baskets of European Union commercial baby foods for the assessment of infant exposure to food chemicals and to their effects.

The assessment of acute and chronic dietary exposure to contaminants in baby foods is needed to ensure healthy infant growth. Monthly European Union market baskets of commercial baby foods were designed for the first 9 months of life by the 'babyfood' study group of the CASCADE Network of Excellence for the specific purpose of assessing exposure to potentially toxic substances in infants fed with such foods. The present paper reports the different steps that led to the preparation of monthly pooled samples of commercial baby foods ('Infant formulae and follow-on formulae' and 'Other baby foods

Mothers' eating disorder history and mother and infant attention to food during infant meal times: a candidate for intergenerational transmission of eating disorder behaviours.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence to suggest that individuals with eating disorders (EDs) show differences in attention to food compared to those without eating disorders. Children of mothers with eating disorders are at an elevated risk of developing an eating disorder themselves. One potential intergenerational pathway may be that parents, and then infants, pay more attention to food in interactions, which in turn mediates transmission of disordered eating behaviours, particularly those during feeding and mealtimes. No study has investigated whether mothers' ED behaviour history is associated
