Epidemiologic comparisons of the sudden infant death syndrome with other major components of infant mortality.

All 1998 resident infant deaths in the 1969--1977 King County, Washington birth cohort of 139,132 resident live births comprise the data base for epidemiologic comparisons of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) with eight other major infant mortality components: hyaline membrane disease; respiratory distress syndrome; asphyxia of the newborn; immaturity; birth injury; congenital malformation; infection; and "all other." These components were compared with respect to age at death; sex; race; prior fetal loss; prior live-born, now dead; birth plurality; birth weight; maternal age; birth orde

Abortion and Infant Mortality: Termination Does Not Prevent Death.

Alison Gemmill et al. claim that infant mortality in Texas increased following its 2021 abortion restrictions, and several sources reported that abortion restrictions harm infants. This is misleading. Gemmill et al.'s findings show that infant deaths increased primarily because abortion for "congenital anomalies" decreased, and a subset of those subjects died in infancy. In other words, infant mortality rose because fetal mortality fell. By analogy, one can reduce teenage deaths by causing deaths before age thirteen, but this does not save lives. Likewise, abortion restrictions may lead to mor

Infant and child mortality in Afghanistan: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since 1990, global child and infant mortality rates have typically stabilized or decreased due to improved healthcare, vaccination rollouts, and international funding. However, Afghanistan continues to face the highest child and infant mortality rates globally, with 43 deaths per 1000 live births. This study aims to examine the factors contributing to this high mortality rate and propose interventions to address the issue. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed, focusing on articles published in English w

The fifty percent male excess of infant respiratory mortality.

AIM: To test whether infant mortality from clearly respiratory causes has a consistent male excess that is different from the male excess in most cardiac conditions. METHODS: Analysis of male excess in infant mortality data from the United States and from north European countries. Data are analyzed for the period 1979-2002 in autopsied and unautopsied cohorts. RESULTS: Several modes of respiratory death in infancy are characterized by an approximate 50% male excess. This common excess is demonstrated in vital statistics for infant respiratory distress syndrome, sudden infant death syndrome,

Maternal vitamin A deficiency and infant mortality in Malawi.

The relationship between maternal vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy and infant mortality is unclear. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 377 HIV-negative women and their infants in Blantyre, Malawi. Serum vitamin A levels were measured during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and infants were followed during the first year of life. From delivery until 12 months of age, 18 infants died (47.7 per 1000). Mothers of infants who died had lower serum vitamin A levels during pregnancy (0.74 +/- 0.13 mumol/l) compared with mothers of infants who did not die (1.02 +/- 0.03 mumol/l)

Searching for preventable causes of infant mortality in Texas.

Texas' health objectives include reducing the infant mortality rate from 8.1 per 1000 live births in 1990 to no more than 7 per 1000 by the year 2000. To help target potentially preventable causes of infant mortality, we examined the underlying cause of each of the 2545 infant deaths that occurred in Texas during 1990. Potential existed for primary prevention of the underlying cause of at least some of 778 infant deaths and for secondary prevention by treating the underlying causes of 1127. The following appear to be the most promising targets and strategies for prevention: causes of neonatal

Infant mortality and mother's education in Ondo State, Nigeria.

A bivariate analysis of infant mortality in the 1986/87 Ondo State Demographic and Health Survey data indicates that children of secondary school graduates experienced a higher rate of infant mortality than children of less educated mothers. Although this pattern has also been shown in a few other Demographic and Health Surveys, this paper explores the Ondo State data to explain why infant mortality showed such a counterintuitive pattern in relation to maternal education. This search for an explanation of the pattern started with an examination of the data for errors and then proceeded to exam

Immunization coverage and infant mortality rate in developing countries.

We examined whether immunization coverage (IMC) is one of the predictors of infant mortality rate (IMR), as a single indicator representing the availability of primary health care (PHC) services in developing countries. Multiple regression analysis showed that partial correlation coefficients for IMR with immunization coverage (-0.224), logarithm of per capita GNP (-0.294), total fertility rate (0.269), and adult literacy rate (-0.325) were all statistically significant (p < 0.001) in 97 developing countries which make up more than 97% of the population in all the developing countries of the w

Syphilis-associated perinatal and infant mortality in rural Malawi.

In Mangochi District, a rural area of Malawi, the prevalence of active syphilis was 3.6% among 3591 women who had singleton births and who were negative for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Compared with non-syphilitic women, those with active syphilis (positive Venereal Disease Research Laboratory/rapid plasmin reagin tests (titre > or = 1:8) and a reactive microhaemagglutination assay) were more likely to experience stillbirths as well as the early and late neonatal deaths and even postneonatal deaths of their children. Characteristics associated with active syphilis were not very useful

Infant mortality in Italy: large geographic and ethnic inequalities.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal and infant mortality rates are among the most significant indicators for assessing a country's healthcare and social development. This study examined the trends in neonatal, post-neonatal, and infant mortality in Italy from 2016 to 2020 and analysed differences between children of Italian and foreign parents based on areas of residence, as well as the leading causes of death. Special attention was given to the analysis of mortality in 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, and its comparison with previous years. METHODS: Data from 2016 to 2020 were collected by th

Variation in Complications and Mortality According to Infant Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate patterns of infant perioperative mortality, describe the infant diagnoses with the highest mortality burden, and evaluate the association between types of postoperative complications and mortality in infants. BACKGROUND: The majority of mortality events in pediatric surgery occur among infants (ie, children <1 y old). However, there is limited data characterizing patterns of infant perioperative mortality and diagnoses that account for the highest proportion of mortality. METHODS: Infants who received inpatient surgery were identified in the National Surgical Quality I

First pertussis vaccine dose and prevention of infant mortality.

BACKGROUND: American infants are at highest risk of severe pertussis and death. We investigated the role of ≥1 pertussis vaccinations in preventing pertussis-related deaths and risk markers for death among infants aged <42 days. METHODS: We analyzed characteristics of fatal and nonfatal infant pertussis cases reported nationally during 1991-2008. Infants were categorized into 2 age groups on the basis of eligibility to receive a first pertussis vaccine dose at age 6 weeks; dose 1 was considered valid if given ≥14 days before illness onset. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimat

Tuberculin reaction and BCG scar: association with infant mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that having a scar and a positive tuberculin skin test (TST) response after vaccination with Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is associated with reduced infant mortality. METHODS: We studied cohorts of 2709 normal-birthweight (NBW) and 1102 low-birthweight (LBW) infants in Guinea-Bissau. Children were enrolled in randomised trials between year 2002 and 2008 and received BCG vaccination at birth. BCG scars and TST responses were assessed at 2 and 6 months of age. The infants were followed for mortality to 12 months of age, and survival was analysed using Cox regr
