Ambroise Tardieu: the man and his work on child maltreatment a century before Kempe.

Ambroise Tardieu was an outstanding French forensic physician of the 19th century. A century before American physicians discovered child abuse as a pediatric and public health problem, Tardieu studied and described almost all forms of child maltreatment. In his "Dictionnaire d'hygiene et de salubrite" (Dictionary of hygiene and salubrity, 1862a, 1862b), Tardieu described the terrible working conditions of children in factories and mines. He also reported the ill consequences of theses conditions on the children's physical and mental health. In his "Etude medico-legale sur les attentats aux moe

[A proposal of essentials for forensic pathological diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)].

There are many sudden unexpected infant death cases which are easily diagnosed as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) both with or without autopsy in Japan. A SIDS diagnosis may provide a cover for accidental or criminal death. SIDS should not be a convenient diagnostic box that shelters the cases of unexpected infant death which lack the necessary antemortem information to make the correct diagnosis. The authors consider that SIDS should be diagnosed according to the direction of the international definition of SIDS, and propose the following essentials for a forensic pathological diagnosis.

A case study of mother-son transfer in mountain gorillas.

In mountain gorillas (Gorilla g. beringei), male immigration in bi-sexual units is rare. This paper presents the case of a nearly weaned male infant gorilla who followed his mother in her transfer. This case was recorded in the study population at the Kariske Research Center in 1988. The data come from observation in Group B (on 12 days just prior to the transfer and on 54 days after the transfer over a period of 6 months). The situation of the infant did match the conditions in which infanticide occurs in gorillas, but he was not killed, despite receiving male aggression and being wounded twi

Understanding maternal mental illness: psychiatric autopsy of a maternal death.

Maternal mental illness is a significant public health concern, with established adverse outcomes on both mother and infant, such as impaired mother-infant bonding and infant cognitive and emotional development. In severe cases, maternal mortality and infanticide can tragically occur. This is a report on the suicide of a mother who jumped to her death at three months postpartum. She suffered from puerperal psychosis with bipolar features, with onset at six weeks postpartum. The case highlights the burden of maternal mental illness in our community as well as the need for resources and services

Forensic pathology and infant deaths: A recent update.

The forensic investigation of infant deaths poses complex challenges, particularly in differentiating between natural, accidental, and intentional causes. Traditional autopsy methods often lack definitive markers for asphyxia or inflicted trauma, resulting in diagnostic ambiguity-especially in cases of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), neonaticide, and infanticide. Overlapping post-mortem findings and inconsistent classification protocols across jurisdictions further hinder accurate determinations. However, recent advancements in forensic pathology-including post-mortem imaging, molecular

Gin Lane: did Hogarth know about fetal alcohol syndrome?

Medical historians have searched for evidence that the characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) were recognized long before its modern description in 1973. This search has often focused on the 'gin epidemic' in 18th century London, and especially William Hogarth's Gin Lane, which some authors allege reflects an awareness of the facial characteristics of the syndrome. While the 'gin epidemic' undoubtedly resulted in the increased birth of weak and sickly children, claims about Hogarth's awareness of the stigmata of the FAS are unfounded. The birth of weak and sickly children, and the hig

Autopsy of two frozen newborn infants discovered in a home freezer.

Two newborn infants (one male and one female) were discovered dead and frozen in a home freezer. Although thawing is expected to lead to changes that may hamper postmortem investigations, the victims could not be examined in the frozen state and were thus immersed in saline at 37 degrees C to completely thaw them over about 90 min. Autolysis and putrefaction were not evident, postmortem changes were slight, and the internal organs were soft, allowing a thorough examination, including an autopsy and a histological investigation. Autopsy showed that both infants were full-term at the time of dea

Dead infants and unmarried women--from forensic pathology reports 1910-12.

The lack of access to contraceptives and poor control over their own pregnancies represented a major problem for women 100 years ago. An unwanted pregnancy could lead to social exclusion and loss of paid work, and clandestine births and infanticide thus posed a social problem. A review of the archives of the Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine in the period 1910 to 1912 shows that one-fifth of all expert opinions were related to infants and pregnancy. Autopsies performed on children constituted over one-third of all forensic autopsies during this period. Although the reports provide a timely

Mortality Causes in Free-Ranging Eurasian Brown Bears (Ursus arctos arctos) in Spain 1998-2018.

This work summarizes the mortality cases of twenty-five free-ranging Eurasian wild brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) from the Cantabrian mountain range submitted for necropsy in Asturias and Castilla y León (northwestern Spain) from 1998 to 2018. Mortality cases were classified both caused by (i) "non-human intervention" or "human intervention" causes and based on (ii) "non-infectious" or "infectious" etiology. In four cases (16%) it was not possible to determine the cause of death due to the inadequate preservation of collected specimens or insufficient tissue availability. Based on "non-huma

Legal Rights of Neonates in India: Birth Concealment, Abandonment, and Safe Surrender.

Neonatal abandonment, concealment of birth, and unsafe surrender, which is defined as relinquishment of a newborn in unprotected, nonmedical settings such as public places, refuse sites, or private locations without supervision or care, remain persistent public health and medico-legal challenges in India. These events occur as the result of a combination of poverty, gender bias, social stigma, perinatal mental-health vulnerability, and gaps in accessible maternal support. For clinicians, immediate priorities include resuscitation, safeguarding the infant, ensuring systematic and accurate docum

[Ethnic variation in congenital pigmentation anomalies].

Clear ethnic differences are observed in the major form of tyrosinase-negative oculocutaneous albinism as well as in other forms of oculocutaneous albinism, cutaneous albinism and the very rare ocular albinism. Most interesting is the borderline between normal variation and abnormal forms, especially illuminated in rutilism or red headedness in Negroids and high frequencies of pigmentation anomalies without appreciable disadvantages for the carrier, e.g., the reddish skin of geographically isolated Papuans. The very differential frequencies of the occurrence of pigmentation anomalies in some p

Conflicting minds: Immanuel Kant, Johann Daniel Metzger, and the debate about forensic psychiatry.

This article explores the dispute between the philosopher Immanuel Kant and the physician Johann Daniel Metzger over the moral autonomy of individuals with mental illness. Situating the debate within the broader context of the evolving philosophical and medical professions in eighteenth-century Germany, the article examines how a professional conflict emerged over who - the physician or the philosopher - should serve as the legal authority in cases where moral responsibility was in question. The analysis shows that this was not merely a theoretical issue for Kant, but a practical one, brought

Serious Rodent Bites to an 8-Month-Old Infant Due to Child Neglect.

Animal bites are among the top causes of preventable traumatic injuries. We describe the case of an 8-month-old female infant who was brought to the emergency department by her grandfather with serious rodent bites on her eyes, nose, right cheek, upper right extremity, and other smaller bites all over her body. This case is another proof of child neglect, or a possible infanticide attempt, as the motives of leaving the child in a hut without proper care, are not cleared up to this date. Rodent bites could be associated with Streptobacillus moniliformis infection and rat-bite fever. If the bite

[Causes of perinatal deaths in children delivered out of hospital in material collected by Chair and Department of Forensic Medicine, Medical University of Warsaw].

The study focused on cases of perinatal deaths of infants delivered out of hospital. The objective of the investigation was to determine the number of such cases in the Warsaw region, focusing in particular on suspected infanticides, evaluate the most frequent causes of death of children born out of hospital and determine possibilities and limitations of autopsies performed in neonates. The material comprised autopsy reports pertaining to 27 forensic perinatal postmortem examinations performed at the Chair and Department of Forensic Medicine, Warsaw Medical University, Poland, in the years 200

Retrospective investigation of medico-legal autopsy cases involving mentally handicapped individuals.

Mentally handicapped individuals were involved in some way in 64 (17.7%) of the total of 362 medico-legal autopsy cases during the past 13 years. Among these 64 cases, 32 were suicides committed by mentally handicapped persons (18 males and 14 females). The most common method of suicide was drowning (65.6%). Five cases were homicides suddenly and unexpectedly committed by mentally handicapped persons. In four of the five cases, the victim was a member of the assailant's family; this was considered to be a characteristic of homicides committed by mentally handicapped persons. On the other hand,

A follow-up study of post partum illness, 1946-1978.

Eighty-two patients, who were treated for post partum illness between 1946 and 1971, were identified and followed up. Diagnostically, the sample comprised unipolar depression (52%), bipolar disorder (18%), schizophrenia (16%), abnormal personality with depression (8%), organic disorder (2%), and obsessional state with depression and paranoid disorder (1% each). The overall prognosis was good, except for schizophrenia, in which more than 50% of patients had chronic disability. Further childbirth intensified, and caused deterioration of, the underlying schizophrenia process. Following an initial

Roles of estrogen receptor-alpha gene expression in reproduction-related behaviors in female mice.

The role of gene expression of the estrogen receptor-alpha form (ER alpha) in the regulation of female reproductive behavior was investigated in estrogen receptor knockout (ERKO) mice, deficient specifically for the ER alpha, but not the ER beta, gene. Estrogen- or estrogen- plus progesterone-treated gonadectomized ERKO mice did not show any lordosis response. Detailed behavioral analysis revealed that ERKO females were also deficient in sexual behavioral interactions preceding the lordosis response. They were extremely rejective toward attempted mounts by stud male mice, which could not show
