Effects of sensorineural hearing loss on formant-frequency discrimination: Measurements and models.

This study concerns the effect of hearing loss on discrimination of formant frequencies in vowels. In the response of the healthy ear to a harmonic sound, auditory-nerve (AN) rate functions fluctuate at the fundamental frequency, F0. Responses of inner-hair-cells (IHCs) tuned near spectral peaks are captured (or dominated) by a single harmonic, resulting in lower fluctuation depths than responses of IHCs tuned between spectral peaks. Therefore, the depth of neural fluctuations (NFs) varies along the tonotopic axis and encodes spectral peaks, including formant frequencies of vowels. This NF cod

Descending Axonal Projections from the Inferior Colliculus Target Nearly All Excitatory and Inhibitory Cell Types of the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus.

The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) integrates auditory nerve input with nonauditory sensory signals and is proposed to function in sound source localization and suppression of self-generated sounds. The DCN also integrates activity from descending auditory pathways, including a particularly large feedback projection from the inferior colliculus (IC), the main ascending target of the DCN. Understanding how these descending feedback signals are integrated into the DCN circuit and what role they play in hearing requires knowing the targeted DCN cell types and their postsynaptic responses. Auditory brainstem in the mole (Mogera): nuclear configurations and the projections to the inferior colliculus.

Anatomical organization of the central auditory system in the mole was studied at the lower brainstem levels. The cyto-, myelo-, and chemoarchitectures were examined in Nissl, myelin, and acetylcholinesterase stained materials, and then the origins of the ascending afferents to the inferior colliculus (IC) were identified by injecting wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into the unilateral IC and processing the tissue according to the standard retrograde tracing techniques. The results indicate that the auditory nuclei and pathways in the lower brainstem of the

Transcollicular approach to intrinsic tectal lesions.

OBJECTIVE: We used a paramedian, infratentorial-supracerebellar, transcollicular approach to resect 11 intrinsic tectal lesions, including 8 tumors and 3 hematomas, in 11 patients. The route of access to the lesions was designed to minimize the anatomic and functional damage to the surrounding structures. METHODS: Access was through one superior colliculus in each of seven patients, through one inferior colliculus in each of two patients, and through the superior and inferior colliculi of one side in each of two patients. RESULTS: Of the eight tumors, three were totally resected, four were n

The pontine projection from the inferior colliculus in the cat. An experimental anatomical study.

The present study was carried out in order to clarify the organization of the pontine projection from the inferior colliculus in the cat with the methods of Nauta27 and Fink and Heimer16 following lesions of different sizes and locations in the inferior colliculus. The inferior colliculus projects exclusively to the anterior two-thirds of the ipsilateral dorsolateral pontine nucleus. The majority of fibers originates from cells in the central nucleus and a small amount from cells in the external and the pericentral nuclei as well. Areas of the present projection largely overlap with areas of p

Tonotopic distribution and inferior colliculus projection pattern of inhibitory and excitatory cell types in the lateral superior olive of Mongolian gerbils.

Sound localization critically relies on brainstem neurons that compare information from the two ears. The conventional role of the lateral superior olive (LSO) is extraction of intensity differences; however, it is increasingly clear that relative timing, especially of transients, is also an important function. Cellular diversity within the LSO that is not well understood may underlie its multiple roles. There are glycinergic inhibitory and glutamatergic excitatory principal neurons in the LSO, however, there is some disagreement regarding their relative distribution and projection pattern. He

Computational modeling of the auditory brainstem response to continuous speech.

OBJECTIVE: The auditory brainstem response can be recorded non-invasively from scalp electrodes and serves as an important clinical measure of hearing function. We have recently shown how the brainstem response at the fundamental frequency of continuous, non-repetitive speech can be measured, and have used this measure to demonstrate that the response is modulated by selective attention. However, different parts of the speech signal as well as several parts of the brainstem contribute to this response. Here we employ a computational model of the brainstem to elucidate the influence of these di

[Diffusion tensor imaging of the central auditory system in the elderly].

Objective:To evaluate the changes in the central auditory system of presbycusis by applying auditury brainstem response (ABR) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Method:A total of twenty-five elderly subjects with expressed presbycusis, eight elderly subjects with normal hearing and fifteen healthy volunteers as young controls were enrolled in the study. Each participant was examined using ABR and DTI. ABR measures were obtained from all the subjects. The fractional anisotropy (FA) was measured at two brain regions of the auditory pathway-the inferior colliculus (IC) and Heschl's gyrus. Result

Noise-induced hyperactivity in the inferior colliculus: its relationship with hyperactivity in the dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Intense noise exposure causes hyperactivity to develop in the mammalian dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) and inferior colliculus (IC). It has not yet been established whether the IC hyperactivity is driven by hyperactivity from extrinsic sources that include the DCN or instead is maintained independently of this input. We have investigated the extent to which IC hyperactivity is dependent on input from the contralateral DCN by comparing recordings of spontaneous activity in the IC of noise-exposed and control hamsters before and after ablation of the contralateral DCN. One group of animals was bi

Interpretation of brainstem auditory evoked potentials: results from intracranial recordings in humans.

The results of recording intracranially from the auditory nerve, lower brainstem nuclei, and the inferior colliculus in more than 40 patients operated upon for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia are presented. Recordings from the auditory nerve have shown that the auditory nerve is the neural generator of the first two peaks in the human ABR. Recordings from the entrance of the eighth nerve into the brainstem and locations close to that reveal potentials; the latencies of the peaks in these potentials match those of peaks III and IV. These peaks are therefore assumed to have their sourc

Electrophysiological responses from the cochlea and inferior colliculus in guinea pigs after head injury.

Electrical responses from the inferior colliculus (ER) and round window (CP) to acoustical stimuli were compared in control and experimental guinea pigs which had received a single blow to the freely movable head. After the blow to the head, all of the animals showed signs of commotio cerebri, and some of them died. The experimental animals were divided into two groups so that the physiologic responses to sound could be evaluated one day (early group) and seven days (intermediate group) following the head blow. The animals of the early group had elevated ER thresholds over the entire frequency

Radiological features of horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis. An 'Aunt Minnie' diagnosis?

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by congenital absence of normal horizontal eye movements and progressive scoliosis through childhood and adolescence. The characteristic radiological features in HGPPS are butterfly configuration of the medulla, split pons sign, selective volume loss of dorsomedial brainstem, relatively spared cerebellum, relatively prominent inferior olivary nucleus and absent posterior prominence of the facial colliculi and gracilis and cuneate nuclei. These radiological features are reflective of RO

Cor pulmonale in a patient with Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome: a case report.

Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome (BVVLS) is a rare neurological disease characterized by sensorineural hearing loss and multiple cranial nerve palsies, usually involving the VIIth and IXth to XIIth cranial nerves. We describe the clinical and pathological features of a 33-year-old woman with BVVLS. The patient developed progressive exertional dyspnea, with clinical and laboratory findings of right-sided heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. She developed status epilepticus in the setting of cardiac deterioration and respiratory infection, and died of cardiogenic and septic shock. Autopsy

[Changes of auditory brainstem response and auditory cortex response after exposure to intensive noise].

Auditory brainstem response and auditory cortex response were recorded repeatedly in 35 guinea pigs after exposure to intensive white noise (125 dB, 150 min.) for 62 d. the amplitude of evoked potential of acoustic nerve was decreased by 29% (P < 0.05), of the cochlear nuclei by 28% (P < 0.05). However, the amplitude of response of superior olives nuclei was increased by 21% (P < 0.05), of the inferior colliculi by 37% (P < 0.05), of the cortical evoked response by 131% (P < 0.001). The results indicate that the amplitudes of auditory evoked potential showed a centripital augmentation after ex

Multiplexed encoding of frequency-modulated sweep features in the inferior colliculus.

Within the central auditory pathway, the inferior colliculus (IC) is a critical integration center for ascending sound information. Although IC neurons have well-characterized receptive fields for individual sound features such as sound frequency, intensity, and location, growing evidence suggests that some neurons also use multiplexing to encode sound feature combinations. Here, we performed in vivo juxtacellular recordings in awake, head-fixed mice to examine how individual IC neurons and neuronal populations encode the speed, direction, and frequency range of frequency-modulated (FM) sweeps

Functional Mapping of the Human Auditory Cortex: fMRI Investigation of a Patient with Auditory Agnosia from Trauma to the Inferior Colliculus.

OBJECTIVE: To use functional magnetic resonance imaging to map the auditory cortical fields that are activated, or nonreactive, to sounds in patient M.L., who has auditory agnosia caused by trauma to the inferior colliculi. BACKGROUND: The patient cannot recognize speech or environmental sounds. Her discrimination is greatly facilitated by context and visibility of the speaker's facial movements, and under forced-choice testing. Her auditory temporal resolution is severely compromised. Her discrimination is more impaired for words differing in voice onset time than place of articulation. Word
