[Calculation of Standardised Unit Costs in the Health and Social Care Sector for the Economic Evaluation of Mental Disorders - Results of the PECUNIA Project for Germany].

BACKGROUND: Current unit costs (UC) for mental health interventions in the German health and social care sector lack a harmonized methodology, making cross-country cost comparisons challenging. METHODS: Twenty-three UCs were calculated based on the harmonized cost collection methods of the PECUNIA project. UC were calculated according to the pre-defined measurement parameters from the PECUNIA questionnaire by means of literature and internet research, or direct correspondence with stakeholders. If UC could not be identified, proxies were used. UCs were, if necessary, adjusted for inflation to

Prevalence of low back pain and its associated factors among traditional cloth weavers in Gulele sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders particularly low back pain is significantly high among common informal or small-scale enterprises within developing countries like weaving. However, there is little information on risk factors for low back pain in the informal sector such as the weaving sector in the areas of Addis Ababa as well as in Ethiopia. Therefore this study was aimed to assess the magnitude of low back pain and its associated factors among traditional cloth weavers in the Gulele sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study with internal comparison was

Precarious Capital: A Qualitative Study Investigating the Role of Relationships When Women Navigate Experiences of Homelessness and Violence.

Research investigating the experiences of women experiencing homelessness often highlights the prevalence of (sexual/domestic) violence and abuse in their trajectories. Drawing on observations across a sample of English statutory and voluntary sector homelessness services and 60 semi-structured interviews with practitioners and with women with homelessness experiences, this study explores these experiences of gender-based violence and the relational impact these may have had on women's help-seeking. Findings suggest that experiences of violence are often normalized, leading some of the women t

Chile's National Center for Health Information Systems: A Public-Private Partnership to Foster Health Care Information Interoperability.

Despite the continuous technical advancements around health information standards, a critical component to their widespread adoption involves political agreement between a diverse set of stakeholders. Countries that have addressed this issue have used diverse strategies. In this vision paper we present the path that Chile is taking to establish a national program to implement health information standards and achieve interoperability. The Chilean government established an inter-agency program to define the current interoperability situation, existing gaps, barriers, and facilitators for interop

Occupational safety and health in India: now and the future.

India, a growing economy and world's largest democracy, has population exceeding 1.2 billion. Out of this huge number, 63.6% form working age group. More than 90% work in the informal economy, mainly agriculture and services. Less than 10% work in the organized sector; mainly industry, mining and some services. New service industries like Information Technology (IT), Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are increasing rapidly; so is the proportion of females in the workforce. The occupational safety and health (OSH) scenario in India is complex. Unprecedented growth and progress go hand in hand

In the shadow of a pandemic: Informality and COVID-19 diffusion in Europe.

This article investigates whether the shadow economy influenced the diffusion of COVID-19 during the first wave in Europe. Using a hybrid econometric model and data from 26 European countries, we test the hypothesis that larger informal sectors acted as amplifiers of contagion by weakening compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions and limiting state enforcement capacity. The results confirm a strong and positive association between shadow economy size and new COVID-19 cases. Each additional 1 % of GDP in the shadow economy corresponds to approximately 0.17 more daily cases per million i

Engaging Communities in Health Promotion through Community-Based Primary Care and Participatory Research During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Most people in low- and middle-income countries work in the informal sector and lack social protection. In Bolivia, the unified family, community, and intercultural health model established universal health coverage for informal workers and their families in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic, which occurred soon after, exposed both the vulnerabilities and the strengths of this health policy. AIM: To describe the community-based design of a health promotion strategy based on people-centered and participatory research within a vulnerable community of informal market vendors during the COV

Provision of Emergency Contraceptive Pills in Kinshasa's Informal Drug Shops: Results from a Mystery Client Study.

CONTEXT: Despite the prominence of informal drug shops as sources of contraceptives in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, evidence on the quality of services they provide is scant. Given efforts to leverage the private sector to increase contraceptive access, evaluating the contraceptive knowledge, attitudes and practices of these providers is warranted. METHODS: In April-May 2018, a mystery client study on the provision of emergency contraception (EC) was conducted in 854 informal drug shops in Kinshasa. Twelve mystery clients, presenting as younger or older than 18 and married or u

Returning migrant characteristics and labor market demand in Greece.

Immigrants who repatriate bring with them modern work skills which many observers in labor exporting regions describe as a great contribution to the mother country. Using data from 2 samples of Greek repatriates as well as projections of industrial labor force demands in Greece for the 1980s, this article challenges this concept. The authors find that the uneven regional development and stunted industrial growth which pushed these workers abroad are also responsible for the narrowly limited employment options which they face once they repatriate. For the urban repatriate, the market is limited

Ghosts in the labour market: perceived health implications of informal labour in Australia.

Employment conditions are important social and commercial determinants of health. Informal employment-also known as 'cash-in-hand' and 'undeclared' work-is a discrete employment condition that has salience around the world. Fuelled by neoliberal ideology, informal employment has become increasingly common in high-income countries. Public health research concerning the health of informal workers comes largely from low- and middle-income countries, where the phenomenon is more visible. There has been little research on the health effects of informal employment in high-income countries including

African swine fever in Nepal: risk factors, impacts, and strategies for control.

African swine fever (ASF) has emerged as a major threat to Nepal's pig farming sector since its first outbreak in March 2022. The disease has caused significant declines in both the pig population and pork production, severely affecting rural communities reliant on pig farming for their livelihoods. ASF's spread is facilitated by key risk factors, including swill feeding, informal cross-border trade, and poor on-farm biosecurity measures. Additionally, seasonal trends, particularly during the monsoon, exacerbate the spread of the disease, especially in areas with high pig density. Control effo

Assessment of self-medication practices in the context of the COVID-19 outbreak in Togo.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is no effective treatment for COVID-19, which is a pandemic disease, caused by a novel coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. In Togo, where four in five people practice self-medication, the absence of a cure for COVID-19 and the constant progression of the disease requires an assessment of self-medication patterns in the context of the pandemic. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-medication to prevent COVID-19 and its associated factors in Lomé, Togo. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lomé, the capital city of Togo, from April 23rd to May 8

Cumulative Antibiotic Exposure in the First 5 Years of Life: Estimates for 45 Low- and Middle-Income Countries From Demographic and Health Survey Data.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of the total cumulative exposure to antibiotics of children in low-resource settings, and the source of these treatments, are limited. METHODS: We estimated the average number of antibiotic treatments children received in the first 5 years of life in 45 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) using Demographic and Health Survey data. The 2-week point prevalence of fever, diarrhea, or cough and antibiotic treatment for these illnesses were estimated for ages 0-59 months and aggregated to estimate cumulative illness and antibiotic treatment for each country. Examination of critical factors influencing ruminant disease dynamics in the Black Sea Basin.

INTRODUCTION: Ruminant production in the Black Sea basin (BSB) is critical for national economies and the subsistence of rural populations. Yet, zoonoses and transboundary animal diseases (TADs) are limiting and threatening the sector. To gain a more comprehensive understanding, this study characterizes key aspects of the ruminant sector in nine countries of the BSB, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine. METHODS: We selected six priority ruminant diseases (anthrax, brucellosis, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), foot-and-mouth

Health Consequences for E-Waste Workers and Bystanders-A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

Informal e-waste recycling is associated with several health hazards. Thus far, the main focus of research in the e-waste sector has been to assess the exposure site, such as the burden of heavy metals or organic pollutants. The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess the health consequences associated with informal e-waste recycling. A questionnaire-based assessment regarding occupational information, medical history, and current symptoms and complaints was carried out with a group of n = 84 e-waste workers and compared to a control cohort of n = 94 bystanders at the e-waste recycling

[Organizing Relationships to Help Homeless People: a Question of Front Line Relational Work].

Objectives In a context where the rather informal ties between front-line practitioners can be conceived as a weakness to be formalized or a force to rely on, this paper explores and documents their conceptions on how they create, maintain and abandon their ties while helping homeless people. Methods Its empirical material is drawn from an interpretative case study on the liaison role of the Homeless Team (Équipe Itinérance). This case is based on semi-directed interviews with 35 practitioners (24 front line practitioners and 11 managers) from 13 Montreal organizations in the homeless sector. A
