Genetic toxicity assessment: employing the best science for human safety evaluation part VI: when salt and sugar and vegetables are positive, how can genotoxicity data serve to inform risk assessment?

This opinion piece examines the current approaches in the design and evaluation of genotoxicity data and recommends an alternative that would provide information that could be more useful to human risk assessment. It is suggested that genotoxicity studies, both in vitro and in vivo, be designed similar to other traditional toxicology studies, such that a dose-response relationship is characterized, including identification of a "no-observed-adverse-effect-level" dose. It is further suggested that genotoxicity tests should no longer be designed or interpreted in isolation but should be examined

Mapping the pathways to health sciences librarianship: reflections and future implications from an immersion session.

OBJECTIVE: Many health sciences librarians enter the profession without specific health sciences training. Some LIS programs have health sciences courses or tracks, but health sciences training within an LIS program is only one path to entering health sciences librarianship. To develop a map of pathways into health sciences librarianship, an immersion session at the Medical Library Association conference in 2022 asked health sciences librarians to share how they entered the profession. METHODS: The immersion session was structured in three parts: facilitator introductions, small group discuss

Science and Videogames: From Scientific Dissemination to Knowledge Production.

Videogames are played by 42% of the global population. As an interactive medium, they require participants to engage actively in the constant construction of knowledge. Their relevance to human biology has been increasing and expanding, ranging from scientific dissemination to knowledge production. This article examines each of the videogames' possible scientific uses, including "commercial" games used for teaching and scientific dissemination, games created by scientists for science dissemination and science education, online games that enable players to help solve scientific problems, and ci

Communicating Science with New Purpose.

The scientific enterprise of the United States is facing challenges on a scale that many living scientists have never encountered. After nearly a century of bipartisan support, the prominence of American science is threatened by dramatic cuts to the federal budget, political interference, and special interests. Although portions of the American public may be generally aware of these challenges, many are not well-versed in what the forthcoming changes mean for future advances in knowledge, our health, the environment, and the economy. Most training in science has focused on communicating the te

Toward a manifesto for the 'public understanding of big data'.

In this article, we sketch a 'manifesto' for the 'public understanding of big data'. On the one hand, this entails such public understanding of science and public engagement with science and technology-tinged questions as follows: How, when and where are people exposed to, or do they engage with, big data? Who are regarded as big data's trustworthy sources, or credible commentators and critics? What are the mechanisms by which big data systems are opened to public scrutiny? On the other hand, big data generate many challenges for public understanding of science and public engagement with scien

Dissemination and implementation science for global ophthalmology: closing the last-mile translational gap.

Despite remarkable advances in ophthalmic diagnostics and therapeutics over the past decade, the global prevalence of avoidable visual impairment and blindness has remained unchanged. This paradox reflects a crisis of care delivery and the persistent failure to consistently, equitably, and effectively translate evidence-based interventions into routine practice for the millions who need them most. Dissemination and implementation (D&I) science offers ophthalmology rigorous, evidence-informed frameworks to close this last-mile translational gap. Drawing on the established body of D&I science th

From lab bench to public voice: how to incorporate science communication into your research program.

Science and research are under attack and scientists need to fight back. Public access to information is at an unprecedented high, but misinformation and disinformation are rampant and societal trust in science and research is at a historic low. Scientists need to be part of restoring trust in science and evidence-based decision making. For a variety of reasons, including time constraints, little professional recognition, and limited communication experience, too few scientists are involved in science outreach. Here, based on our experience as research scientists who engage in science outreach

Core principles for the implementation of the neurodata without borders data standard.

BACKGROUND: The Neurodata Without Borders data standard (NWB) unifies diverse modalities of neurophysiology data in a single format. Integrating NWB with a database unleashes its full potential to promote collaboration, standardize analyses, capitalize on historical data, and ensures data integrity by maintaining process transparency. NWB database technology is the bedrock of analytical systems used by academic leaders including the Allen Institute and the International Brain Laboratory. Here we present the benefits of incorporating NWB design principles in a big data analytics application. N

Clarifying dissemination outcomes: a taxonomy to advance dissemination science.

BACKGROUND: Dissemination science lacks shared language for specifying what dissemination strategies are designed to achieve. Without clearly defined outcomes, researchers cannot design studies that explain why dissemination strategies succeed or fail, compare findings, or build cumulative evidence about how dissemination works. METHODS: We drew on dissemination scholarship, communication and behavior theory, innovation diffusion, public policy, and organizational readiness frameworks, and two decades of applied experience within a national HIV research network, to identify and iteratively re

Human-Centered Design of a Multistakeholder Reporting Dashboard for Disseminating HIV Implementation Research in the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative: Development and Formative Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Interactive dashboards have expanded public access to HIV surveillance and programmatic data, but existing tools do not synthesize implementation research evidence into formats accessible to the diverse stakeholders who could use it. Designing such tools requires deliberate alignment with users' needs, language, and decision-making contexts. OBJECTIVE: We describe the human-centered design (HCD) process used to develop and conduct a formative evaluation of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) Implementation Science (IS) Reporting Dashboard, a public-facing tool intended to synthesize

[Information of the Center for Ecology and Epidemiology of Influenza, D. I. Ivanovsky Research Institute of Virology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, on the results of the 2009-2010 influenza and acute respiratory viral infection epidemic season (at week 40 of 2009 to week 22 of 2010) in the world and Russia].

The paper describes the specific features of the 2009-2010 epidemic season in Russia and the world, which are due to the wide spread of a new pandemic strain of influenza A(H1N1)v virus. There is an unusual early upsurge in the incidence of influenza and acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) (in October-November 2009) with its peak at weeks 45 to 48 of the year with a succeeding reduction to the seasonal values by its end. The circulation of influenza B virus strains was recorded in February-April 2010, which was responsible for the higher epidemic thresholds of morbidity in a number of Rus

Application of dissemination and implementation science theories, models, and frameworks in HIV research: a scoping review (2020-2024).

BACKGROUND: Dissemination and implementation science (D&I) theories, models, and frameworks (TMFs) provide structured approaches to studying and enhancing the adoption, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based interventions. Despite the growing interest in using D&I science in HIV research, details applying D&I TMFs remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review characterizes the use of D&I TMFs in domestic and global HIV research. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed empirical studies published between January 2020 and May 2024 that applied at least one D&I TMF i

Advancing data science in drug development through an innovative computational framework for data sharing and statistical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Novartis and the University of Oxford's Big Data Institute (BDI) have established a research alliance with the aim to improve health care and drug development by making it more efficient and targeted. Using a combination of the latest statistical machine learning technology with an innovative IT platform developed to manage large volumes of anonymised data from numerous data sources and types we plan to identify novel patterns with clinical relevance which cannot be detected by humans alone to identify phenotypes and early predictors of patient disease activity and progression. Developing a Toolkit to Support Dissemination and Implementation of the Red Carpet Entry Program.

The Red Carpet Entry (RCE) program is an evidence-informed structural intervention to improve linkage to HIV care within 72 h of diagnosis. In this paper, we review a rigorous, novel approach for evaluating an implementation toolkit to support adoption and effective implementation of RCE. We fielded and evaluated an RCE implementation toolkit at two clinic sites over an 8-month period. We evaluated the toolkit by assessing implementation processes, contexts, and outcomes at each clinic site, and by surveying and interviewing key implementation staff (n = 9) to solicit their feedback on the too

Implementation of digital tuberculosis information systems: perspectives from 10 high TB burden countries.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health crisis, with 10.8 million people diagnosed annually and 2.7 million cases going undetected in 2023. While TB digital health information systems offer promising solutions for detection and management in low- and middle-income countries, implementation effectiveness varies significantly across health system contexts. However, no studies have systematically examined implementation experiences across multiple high-burden countries using implementation science frameworks, leaving National TB Program (NTP) managers without evidence-based guidance for c

Good science, poor visibility? Communicating behavioural nutrition and physical activity evidence in the algorithmic attention economy.

Behavioural nutrition and physical activity research has produced a strong and growing evidence base to inform prevention, treatment, and policy across a wide range of health outcomes. Yet the visibility of this evidence beyond academic audiences does not consistently reflect its scientific quality. Increasingly, dissemination occurs within digital environments shaped by algorithms that prioritise engagement, simplicity, novelty, and emotional salience over nuance and uncertainty. This creates a mismatch between the complexity that characterises behaviour change science and the attention-drive

Dispelling disaster myths about dead bodies and disease: the role of scientific evidence and the media.

For decades, after nearly every natural disaster, fear of disease has encouraged communities, local authorities, and governments to rapidly dispose of the bodies of the victims without first identifying them. In May 2004 this journal published the first-ever review article to comprehensively assess the scientific evidence on the infectious disease risks of dead bodies following natural disasters, along with an editorial commenting on the persistence of myths concerning the dangers allegedly posed by dead bodies. This paper assesses the impact that the review article and the editorial have had

New Strategies to Tackle the Combined Biological and Social Context of Preterm Birth.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth rates in the population and associated racial inequities have remained relatively unchanged in the United States despite research aimed at prevention. This is potentially the result of the multifactorial pathophysiologic pathways that result in preterm birth, where biological and social drivers intersect in unique ways for different women. The field of dissemination and implementation (D&I) science may address this issue by promoting the contextually-aware uptake of science into health and health care delivery. STUDY DESIGN: In this paper, we describe how the field of
