Inhalant abuse is one of the common presentations in de-addiction clinic among children and adolescent age group. Psychiatric morbidity is high among inhalant users but there is very little evidence to consider it a direct result of it. We present a case of 17-year-old boy with symptoms of mania which had time event correlation with inhalant use. He was successfully treated with antipsychotic medications and is maintaining well. The case highlights the need of strong suspicion of inhalant abuse in young patients who present with acute onset of psychiatric symptoms.

UNLABELLED: Inhalants are common drugs of abuse. Hydrocarbons, the active ingredient in most inhalants, exert depressant effects on the central nervous system, causing a 'high'. In the heart, hydrocarbon toxicity can predispose patients to arrhythmias and heart failure through increased sympathetic susceptibility. We present the case of a 28-year-old female who developed dilated cardiomyopathy in the setting of chronic inhalant abuse.
LEARNING POINTS: Chronic inhalant abuse can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure.Chronic inhalant abusers should be screened for signs of heart failure.

Solvent abuse, as inhalant specially, in the form of low cost adhesives like dendrite is common in low income countries among children and the teens. This habit is often a stepping stone to harder drugs. The neurological and neuropsychological effects of solvent abuse are well explored. But the respiratory effects are often overlooked. In this report, we present a case of a 19 year old gentleman, with regular history of sniffing of commercial "glue" compounds. This patient presented with right sided chest pain and chest x-ray showed a right sided pneumothorax. The pulmonary barotrauma, possibl

Studies consistently indicate that inhalant use is associated with increased mental health problems in adolescents, but few investigations have focused on the potential relationship of inhalant use to suicidality (ideation or attempt). This study examined how different levels of volatile solvent use relate to suicidal ideation and attempted suicide among 723 incarcerated youth (mean age=15.5, S.D.=1.2; 87% male) in Missouri, and whether any associations between solvent use and suicidality differ by gender. In bivariate analyses, severity of inhalant use was positively associated with histories

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Inhalants are substances whose chemical vapors are inhaled to produce euphoric, disinhibiting, and exciting effects. Data on inhalant abuse in India are relatively scarce. We report the demographic and clinical profile of inhalant users among the treatment seekers at a Drug De-addiction and Treatment Centre in north India.
METHODS: The records of treatment seekers at the Drug De-addiction and Treatment Centre, over 10 years (2002-2011) were scanned to identify 92 cases reporting inhalant use. Of these 92 cases, the complete record files were available for 87 (94.6%) c

Inhalant abuse is a serious and ever-evolving problem for our society. Inhalants are abused more commonly by teenagers and adolescents. Inhalants such as glue, paint thinners, correction fluid, and nail paint remover are easily available in the market which makes them readily abused. Out of various methods of abuse, huffing (placing a piece of cloth soaked with inhalant is placed in the mouth), bagging (placing head in a polythene bag containing inhalant), and ballooning (balloons filled with inhalant are used for inhaling vapors through the mouth) are most common. Inhalant abuse results in mu

AIM: Inhalant abuse is a prevalent and often overlooked form of substance abuse in adolescents. Chronic inhalant abuse can damage respiratory, cardiac, renal, hepatic, and neurologic systems. This study aims to determine the physiologic effects of inhaling solvents on the respiratory functions.
METHODS: The general health status of the subjects was assessed by history taking, physical examination and a questionnaire which was designed to show the severity of respiratory symptoms. Spirometry, ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy, and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) were performed to a

AIM: Chronic inhalant use is associated with significant toxic effects, including neurological, renal, hepatic, and pulmonary damage. However, there is a paucity of reports regarding respiratory complications in inhalant abusers. The aim of this study was to evaluate pulmonary epithelial permeability in the volatile substance abuse (VSA) using Tc-99m DTPA aerosol scintigraphy.
METHODS: This study included 18 patients with volatile substance abuse and 18 volunteer controls. All of patients and controls were smokers. Tc-99m DTPA aerosol scintigraphy was performed in all cases. Time-activity cur

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of mood, anxiety, and personality disorders among lifetime inhalant users.
METHODS: Statistical analyses were based on data from the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a nationally representative survey of adults in the United States.
RESULTS: Inhalant users (N=664) had high lifetime prevalences of DSM-IV mood (48%), anxiety (36%), and personality (45%) disorders. Of all inhalant users, 70% met criteria for at least one lifetime mood, anxiety, or personality disorder and 38% experienced a moo

Inhalant use refers to the use of substances such as gases, glues, and aerosols in order to achieve intoxication, while inhalant use disorder (IUD) encompasses both DSM-IV-TR criteria for inhalant abuse and dependence. Inhalant use among adolescents is an international public health concern considering the severe medical and cognitive consequences and biopsychosocial correlates. In this paper, we summarize the current state of the literature on inhalant use among adolescents focusing on social context, prevention, assessment, and treatment strategies. Psychoeducation, skills training, and envi

A woman in her late 50s with a history of multiple prior orthopaedic surgeries presented with severe left hip pain. Initial pelvic radiographs showed diffuse sclerosis, cortical thickening and coarse trabeculae, suggesting polyostotic Paget's disease or another metabolic disorder. However, further imaging revealed widespread skeletal sclerosis and cortical thickening throughout the axial skeleton. In addition, a history of chronic inhalant abuse was reported in the medical record. In conjunction with the patient's history of computer duster abuse and potential difluoroethane exposure, a subseq

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies have suggested inhalant use is associated with psychosis. This association was examined in a longitudinal study accounting for other substance use and potential confounders.
METHODS: We used a prospective sample (N = 6542) from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986. Self-report questionnaires on substance use and psychotic experiences were completed when the cohort members were 15-16 years old. Inhalant use was categorized into four groups (never, once, 2-4 times, 5 times or more). Subsequent psychosis diagnoses (ICD-10) until age 30 years were obtained fr

Analysis of death certificates in Texas from 1988 to 1998 showed that the characteristics of 144 Texans for whom inhalants were mentioned as a contributing cause of death are different from those Texans who report use of inhalants in surveys and from persons who died from inhalant abuse in Virginia. While Texas surveys show little difference in prevalence of use between white and Hispanic adolescents or between boys and girls, Texas death data indicate inhalant use is also a problem among adult white males. The mean age of decedents was 25.6 years (SD 9.8 years), and ages ranged from 8 to 62 y

INTRODUCTION: Inhalant misuse, particularly glue sniffing, is one of the most harmful yet least studied forms of substance abuse among street-involved children. Despite high prevalence in some low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), research is limited, fragmented, and often embedded within broader substance use studies. This study aimed to map global research trends, identify thematic patterns, and highlight gaps in the literature on inhalant misuse among this population.
METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus and Web of Science databases, searched on June 12, 2025 wit

Exposure to drugs is unfortunately common among high school students and its use has been linked to depression and suicide risk. We used the 2011 Arkansas Youth Risk Behavior Survey to estimate the prevalence of drug abuse and to measure its association with teen suicidality. Three types of substance misuse were reported by more than 10% of Arkansas high school students: cannabis (33.3% ever use). inhalants (18.7% ever use). and prescription drugs without a prescription (13.2% ever use). We found in all suicide outcomes a stronger association with prescription drug abuse, followed by inhalant
