Henoch Schonlein purpura associated with bee sting: case report.

Henoch Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a common childhood vasculitis, characterized by a non-thrombocytopenic palpable purpura and systemic features. It can be triggered by conditions like infections and insect bites. We present the case of a six-year-old girl with palpable maculopapular lesions on the lower limbs, itching, mild pain, swelling of feet, limitation of limb mobility, and a history of bee sting. Thigh skin biopsy was performed, with a report of leucocytoclastic vasculitis, and was diagnosed as HSP. She was prescribed bed rest, and was given oral hydration. The patient outcome was favor

Are Orienteers Protected Enough against Tick Bites? Estimating Human Exposure to Tick Bites through a Participative Science Survey during an Orienteering Competition.

Mass-participation events in temperate forests are now well-established features of outdoor activities and represent high-risk activities regarding human exposition to tick bites. In this study we used a citizen science approach to quantify the space-time frequency of tick bites and undetected tick bites among orienteers that participated in a 6-day orienteering competition that took place in July 2018 in the forests of Eastern France, and we looked at the use and efficacy of different preventive behaviors. Our study confirms that orienteers are a high-risk population for tick bites, with 62.4

Autopsy diagnosis of a death due to scorpion stinging--a case report.

Post-mortem diagnosis of envenomation by a scorpion with or without a reliable history is a herculean task for any forensic pathologist. The challenge is compounded when stinging occurs at night, with the history remaining unreliable. The autopsy diagnosis is further complicated when the inflicted wound is small, and the mark is obliterated by healing within few days. As the venom of a scorpion is a mixture of enzymes, most of the forensic science laboratories in India fail to diagnose the poisoning. We present a case in which there was no external evidence of stinging, but the internal post-m

Reactions to insect allergens. The incidence of response to testing among allergic and nonallergic persons.

Positive reactions to skin tests with extracts of various insects were found to be significantly higher in 200 patients with allergic disease than in 150 nonallergic controls.Forty-seven per cent of the allergic group had positive reaction to bee, 46 per cent to house fly, 39.5 per cent to moth, 29.5 to ant and 28.5 to aphid. Ant and house fly extract caused the greatest number of severe reactions (4+), with moth second and bee third. Because extracts of nonstinging insects caused reaction almost as often and as strong as stinging insects, it may be inferred that sensitization is due to inhale

[Envenomations].

Although venomous animals are less frequent in Europe than in tropical countries, some dangerous species can be responsible of envenomations in France. Bites by two species of adders (Vipera aspis and Vipera berus) can lead to extensive swelling with multiorgan failure. Treatment is based on intravenous infusions of specific antivenom. Bites and stings by other animal species encountered in France are characterised by important pain with local signs like necrosis, bleeding or oedema: weevers, scorpion fish, centipedes, bees, wasps.... Contrary to scorpions of North Africa or India, the 5 scorp

Venomous bites and stings.

Travellers to tropical countries are often extremely concerned about the risk of bites and stings by venomous animals. This fear prompts many enquiries, usually at the last moment before departure, about the possibility of carrying first aid kits and antivenoms. In fact, these accidents are extremely rare because most travellers wear shoes and are far less exposed to venomous animals than indigenous peoples for whom bites and stings may be important causes of death or morbidity.

Further studies on the reinvasion of the onchocerciasis control programme by Simulium damnosum s.l.: the effects of an extension of control activities into southern Ivory Coast during 1979.

During 1979 the aerial larviciding operations of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme were extended southwestwards to cover those areas with Ivory Coast where the savanna cytospecies of the Simulium damnosum complex were known to breed. This resulted in a marked reduction of the reinvasion which threatened the Programme in Ivory Coast and Upper Volta in earlier years. Previous conclusions concerning the location of sources of invading populations and consequently the direction and distance of the movements of flies were substantiated. It was confirmed that S. damnosum s. str. and S. sirbanum w

[Management of acute anaphylaxis in clinical practice in the context of the guidelines].

Anaphylaxis is a rapidly progressing, life-threatening allergic reaction that needs rapid diagnosis and treatment. Recent research has brought new information about the increasing incidence of anaphylaxis. Nevertheless, the prevalence and incidence of anaphylaxis are difficult to estimate due to the lack of consensus on the definition of anaphylaxis, differences between the population groups analysed, and use of different data collection methods. The most common triggers of anaphylaxis are food allergens, insect stings, and drugs. The serum tryptase level serves as a diagnostic indicator of an

Humans vary in their ability to elicit biting responses from Simulium venustum (Diptera:Simuliidae).

Human subjects were exposed to Simulium venustum (sensu lato) to determine whether biting rates differed among individuals. Tests with S. venustum collected from a CO2-baited target demonstrated that one subject was consistently bitten more often than another. For each individual, biting increased with the differential between skin and ambient temperature. Latex rubber membranes that had been worn against the skin of subjects and then stretched onto a warned aluminum block were always bitten less often than control membranes. Results lend credibility to popular notions that some people are bit

Flies and myiasis.

Many species of flies cause insect bites. The Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus flies, which carry leishmaniasis, and the Simulium flies, which carry onchocerciasis, have the greatest impact. Fly larvae, or maggots, can be used to cleanse necrotic debris from a wound. Although repulsive, this may be effective. Some larvae are obligatory parasites of warm-blooded animals and sometimes of man. These must burrow into the flesh in order to develop. Screwworms cause great problems for livestock and, rarely, for man. Dermatobia hominis is the most common such parasite seen in the United States. Infection wi

Public health impact of nuisance biting blackfly (Simulium damnosum s.l.) along the Asejire dam in Southwest, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Black flies remain a global public health concern, particularly through their biting behaviour which is a crucial risk factor in disease transmission. The present study seeks to investigate the public health implications of the biting behaviour of Simulium damnosum s.l along the Asejire dam, bordering Oyo and Osun State, Nigeria. METHODS: Simulium damnosum s.l were collected using the standard human landing collection (HLC) between 0700 and 1800 across four study areas within first-line communities around the Asejire dam between December, 2024 and November, 2025. Collection was re

Chiggers.

Chigger infestations are caused by mite larvae that feed on the host's epidermal cells. The combination of digestive enzymes secreted by the mite and the immune response of the host produces the typical "chigger bite." Intense pruritus is the usual response, but more severe reactions and chigger-borne disease may also occur. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and consists of antipruritics, antihistamines and steroids. Chigger infestation may be minimized by the use of proper clothing and insect repellents.

Man-biting species of Chrysops meigen, Culicoides latreille and Simulium latreille in Ethiopia, with discussion of their vector potentialities.

Human filariasis and its vectors are little known in Ethiopia. Wuchereia bancrofti is confined to the western lowlands and cannot be the aetiological agent of elephantiasis in the highlands. Onchocerca volvulus is widespread in the south-western highlands. Loa loa and Dipetalonema perstans are reported here for the first time and appear to be uncommon. Studies were conducted in 1973, mostly near Jimma in Kaffa Province, on potential vectors of all but the first of these parasites. Among Simuliidae, the only blackflies of apparent medical importance were S. woodi ethiopiense and a possibly new
