Targeting cattle for malaria elimination: marked reduction of Anopheles arabiensis survival for over six months using a slow-release ivermectin implant formulation.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes that feed on animals can survive and mediate residual transmission of malaria even after most humans have been protected with insecticidal bednets or indoor residual sprays. Ivermectin is a widely-used drug for treating parasites of humans and animals that is also insecticidal, killing mosquitoes that feed on treated subjects. Mass administration of ivermectin to livestock could be particularly useful for tackling residual malaria transmission by zoophagic vectors that evade human-centred approaches. Ivermectin comes from a different chemical class to active ingredients

Effectiveness and Efficacy of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets for Malaria Control in Africa: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have significantly reduced the malaria burden in recent decades, and this malaria prevalence reduction has been achieved through the upgrading of pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets. However, this reduction has stalled due to many factors, including rapidly developing pyrethroid resistance. Method: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO, and we used Cochrane methodology to assess bias and evidence quality. Three reviewers extracted data from individual studies, and a meta-analysis was performed using Excel and STATA version 17, expressi

Early Bio-Efficacy Loss of Nets Mass Distributed for Malaria Vector Control in Madagascar in 2018: Implications for Malaria Prevention.

In 2018, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were mass distributed across Madagascar. The bio-efficacy of DawaPlus® 2.0 and PermaNet® 2.0 ITNs was assessed upon arrival and at 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution. Chemical analyses of insecticide residue on ITNs were also conducted. On arrival, mosquito mortality rates observed when exposed to DawaPlus 2.0 (86.4%) and PermaNet 2.0 nets (83.6%) exceeded the WHO's threshold of 80.0%. At 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution, mosquito mortality rates were <56% for all districts. Moreover, the knockdown effect was below the WHO threshold of 95.

An evaluation of LLIN physical integrity and population attitudes towards net use, care and handling during the Magude project in southern Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: The Magude Project assessed the feasibility of eliminating malaria in Magude district, a low transmission setting in southern Mozambique, using a package of interventions, including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). As the efficacy of LLINs depends in part on their physical integrity, this metric was quantified for Olyset® Nets post mass-distribution, in addition to net use, care and handling practices and other risk factors associated with net physical integrity. METHODS: Nets were collected during a cross-sectional net evaluation, nine months after the Magude project comme

Insufficient duration of insecticidal efficacy of Yahe® insecticide-treated nets in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the backbone of anti-malarial vector control in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Over recent years the quality and performance of ITNs delivered to PNG decreased, which has likely contributed to the stagnation in the malaria control effort in the country. The present study reports results from the first 24 months of a durability study with the ITN product Yahe LN® in PNG. METHODS: The durability study was conducted in four villages on the northern coast of PNG, in an area with high malaria parasite transmission, following WHO-recommended methodology adap

Taking the 'I' out of LLINs: using insecticides in vector control tools other than long-lasting nets to fight malaria.

Long-lasting insecticidal nets, or LLINs, have significantly reduced malaria morbidity and mortality over the past two decades. The net provides a physical barrier that decreases human-mosquito contact and the impregnated insecticide kills susceptible mosquito vectors upon contact and may repel them. However, the future of LLINs is threatened as resistance to pyrethroids is now widespread, the chemical arsenal for LLINs is very limited, time from discovery of next-generation insecticides to market is long, and persistent transmission is frequently caused by vector populations avoiding contact

Modelling the relative abundance of the primary African vectors of malaria before and after the implementation of indoor, insecticide-based vector control.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a heavy burden across sub-Saharan Africa where transmission is maintained by some of the world's most efficient vectors. Indoor insecticide-based control measures have significantly reduced transmission, yet elimination remains a distant target. Knowing the relative abundance of the primary vector species can provide transmission models with much needed information to guide targeted control measures. Moreover, understanding how existing interventions are impacting on these relative abundances highlights where alternative control (e.g., larval source management) is n

Malaria vectors in the Greater Mekong Subregion: overview of malaria vectors and remaining challenges.

Malaria transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion depends on, among other factors, vector behavior and ecology, and the degree of contact between humans and the Anopheles mosquitoes. This chapter will review and update knowledge presented in the 2003 Mekong Malaria monograph for planning and implementing evidence-based vector control programs. Collation of 150 publications and reports showed that the highest number of vector species reported included An. minimus Theobald complex (26.74%), An. dirus Peyton and Harrison (14.26%), An. sundaicus (Rodenwaldt) (5.65%), An. sinensis Wiedemann (4.2

Implementation of a malaria prevention education intervention in Southern Ethiopia: a qualitative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Though school-aged children (SAC) are at high risk of malaria, they are the ones that benefit the least from malaria prevention measures. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of malaria prevention education (MPE) on insecticide-treated bed net (ITN) utilization and prompt diagnosis, reported incidence and treatment (PDAT) of malaria. Qualitative evaluation of the implementation of such interventions is vital to explain its effectiveness and will serve as guidance for future interventions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the implementati

The influence of feeding behaviour and temperature on the capacity of mosquitoes to transmit malaria.

Insecticide-treated bed nets reduce malaria transmission by limiting contact between mosquito vectors and human hosts when mosquitoes feed during the night. However, malaria vectors can also feed in the early evening and in the morning when people are not protected. Here, we explored how the timing of blood feeding interacts with environmental temperature to influence the capacity of Anopheles mosquitoes to transmit the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. In laboratory experiments, we found no effect of biting time itself on the proportion of mosquitoes that became infectious (vector

Which indoor residual spraying insecticide best complements standard pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets for improved control of pyrethroid resistant malaria vectors?

BACKGROUND: Where resources are available, non-pyrethroid IRS can be deployed to complement standard pyrethroid LLINs with the aim of achieving improved vector control and managing insecticide resistance. The impact of the combination may however depend on the type of IRS insecticide deployed. Studies comparing combinations of pyrethroid LLINs with different types of non-pyrethroid IRS products will be necessary for decision making. METHODS: The efficacy of combining a standard pyrethroid LLIN (DuraNet®) with IRS insecticides from three chemical classes (bendiocarb, chlorfenapyr and pirimipho

Efficacy of Olyset long-lasting bednets to control transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran.

A large-scale intervention field trial of the effect of Olyset long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets on transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis was carried out in 2 cities in the Islamic Republic of Iran from October 2003 to July 2005. We enrolled 8620 individuals in 3000 households in 6 pairs of sectors in each city. Epidemiological and entomological surveys were carried out pre- and post-intervention. In both cities a statistically significant reduction was found in the incidence of new cases in intervention sectors who received bednets compared with control areas. Entomological surveys s

Can dual active ingredient Interceptor® G2 insecticide-treated net (ITN) replace indoor residual spraying (IRS) efficiently? A case study in Sakassou, Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Following three successful rounds of indoor residual spraying (IRS) implementation in the district of Sakassou (Côte d'Ivoire), IRS was withdrawn and replaced by insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). This study evaluated the entomological and epidemiological impacts of Interceptor (IG2) ITNs distributed in Sakassou to determine whether the protection offered by IG2 ITNs was adequate to suppress malaria transmission post-IRS withdrawal. METHODS: This study is a quasi-experimental evaluation using historical data and additional data collections on entomological indicators and malaria inc

Impact of insecticide-treated nets on malaria morbidity and mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in reducing malaria incidence and malaria-related mortality among vulnerable populations. METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive search of Scopus, Medline, and CINAHL (up-to-April 2, 2026) identified experimental studies (randomised and cluster-randomised trials) evaluating the effect of ITNs impact for malaria control, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024609183). Pooled-effect-sizes [rate-ratios(RRs) and odds-ratios (ORs)] were calculated, and meta-regression was conducted t

Meta-analysis on the entomological effects of differentially treated ITNs in a multi-site experimental hut study in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Restricting the placement of active ingredients (AIs) to specific panels on insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) has the potential to reduce the amount of AI required to treat a net. If the restricted placement of the AIs can exploit mosquito behaviour, particularly where they interact with the bed net interface, and not impact the net's effectiveness, then the reduction in AI could result in cost reductions. METHODS: Nine individual experimental hut trials were conducted to compare the efficacy of three different partially-treated net relative to fully treated nets; roof-only treated

A dynamic game of lymphatic filariasis prevention by voluntary use of insecticide treated nets.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been targeted for elimination as a public health concern by 2030 with a goal to keep the prevalence of LF infections under the 1% threshold. While mass drug administration (MDA) is a primary strategy recommended by WHO, the use of insecticide treated nets (ITN) plays a crucial role as an alternative strategy when MDA cannot be used. In this paper, we use imitation dynamics to incorporate human behavior and voluntary use of ITN into the compartmental epidemiological model of LF transmission. We find the equilibrium states of the dynamics and the ITN usage as it dep

Evaluation of Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) for malaria control in an endemic area in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of malaria in Brazil are concentrated in the Amazon region. One of the vector control alternatives recommended by the WHO is the long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). This tool is used in the nine federal states of the Brazilian Legal Amazon, where LLINs are essential for reducing vector density and disease transmission as they prevent contact between the mosquito and the individual. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residuality and use of LLIN insecticides in different health regions in a city located in the Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: A total of 17,027 LL

Malaria-associated risk factors among adolescents living in areas with persistent transmission in Senegal: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In Senegal, malaria morbidity has sharply decreased over these past years. However, malaria epidemiology remains heterogeneous with persistent transmission in the southeastern part of the country and many cases among older children and adolescents. Little is known about factors associated with clinical malaria among this group. A better understanding of malaria transmission among this newly emerging vulnerable group will guide future interventions targeting this population group. This study aimed to identify factors associated with clinical malaria among adolescents in Senegal. ME
