Prevalence, Economic Burden, and Healthcare Utilization among Medicare and Commercially Insured Patients with Oropharyngeal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal and oral cancers (OOC) represent a growing public health concern with significant long-term health and economic consequences. This study evaluated risk-adjusted dental utilization patterns and associated healthcare costs among patients with OOC in Medicare and commercially insured populations. METHODS: Using the 2013 to 2024 Merative MarketScan Research Databases, individuals with at least one medical claim for OOC were identified and matched 1:1 to non-OOC controls using propensity score matching. Analyses were stratified by insurance type (Medicare vs. commercial).

Disparities in Timing of Alveolar Bone Grafting and Dental Reconstruction in Patients With Clefts.

This study sought to identify disparities in the timing of alveolar bone grafting (ABG) surgery and the replacement strategy for missing maxillary lateral incisors for patients with clefts. A retrospective record review identified patients who underwent ABG. Multivariable regression analyzed the independent contribution of each variable. This institutional study was performed at the University of California, San Francisco. Patients who presented under age 12 and underwent secondary ABG between 2012 and 2020 (n = 160). The age at secondary ABG and the recommended dental replacement treatment fo

Dental complaints in emergency departments: a national perspective.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Using nationally representative data, we sought to describe the incidence of emergency department (ED) visits for dental-related complaints for children and adults in the United States. We hypothesized that dental-related ED visits were more likely than other ED visits to have Medicaid or no insurance as the payer. METHODS: We used data from the 1997 to 2000 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, a national probability sample survey of hospital ED visits that is conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. From these data, all ED visits in which one of

Association Between Self-Reported Dental Hygiene Practices and Dental Procedure-Related Recurrent Angioedema Attacks in HAE Subjects: A Multicenter Survey.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) symptoms may be triggered by dental procedures, thereby complicating dental care in individuals affected by the condition. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the self-perceived dental care needs, perceived susceptibility to acute angioedema (AE) attacks after dental procedures, and dental care behavior of patients with HAE. METHODS: A self-administered semistructured web-based questionnaire was distributed to 250 adult patients with HAE (type 1 or 2; 88% type 1) and 256 matched non-HAE controls. Data were analyzed using stratified χ2 tests, logistic re

Associations between risk factors, including approximal contact types and dental caries in children from low-income families. Pilot study.

The present cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate various caries risk factors in children from low socio-economic groups and to assess if children with broad contacts between one or more primary molars (type I and S) should be categorized as at high caries risk. Clinical examinations were performed on 107, 3- to 10-year-old children from low socio-economic settings. Contact types along with other caries risk factors (insurance, diet, plaque, and fluoride use, and diet habits) were analyzed for effect on presence of caries lesions (prevalence) and caries experience (decayed, missing,

Prenatal Oral Health for Black Women.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal oral care is a huge concern due to hormonal changes women undergo during pregnancy, during which pregnant women become susceptible to many oral diseases, such as periodontal disease. Disparities in oral health often affect women who fall into these categories: low-income, uninsured, and minority ethnic/racial groups. Having limited knowledge and a lack of access are significant contributing factors to the adverse effects of pregnancies. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to understand the perspectives of pregnant Black women and dental health care providers wit

Dental care utilization: patterns and predictors in persons living with HIV in British Columbia, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the predisposing, enabling, and need factors of the Andersen and Newman (A&N) model and their associations with the pattern of dental service utilization in a sample of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in British Columbia. METHODS: Participants responded anonymously to a 40-item online questionnaire to explore the patterns of dental service utilization. Following the descriptive statistics, the associations between A&N model factors and main outcome variables (having a dental visit in the last year and reasons for the dental visit) were evaluated using simple and multipl

Issues regarding insurance and other third-party reimbursement for behavioral management procedures.

Issues related to reimbursement for time and effort expended in providing behavior management services for children often result in confusion and frustration for the parent and practitioner. Multiple medical and dental insurance plans within a state or region frequently lack a common set of definitions that are fundamental in interpreting and applying contract language. Ambiguities and inconsistencies in state and federal programs and regulatory structures, as well as budget concerns, only exacerbate the problem. This paper reviews issues of third-party payment associated with dental care for

Oral Health on Sal, Cape Verde: A Population-Based, Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Sal is one of the ten islands of Cape Verde, a lower-middle-income country in Africa. Local reports suggest poor oral health among residents, but no scientific data exists. This study aimed to assess oral health status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of Sal's dentulous inhabitants, identify risk factors associated with oral health, and explore correlations between oral health and OHRQoL in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted among dentulous Sal residents. Final-year dental students from the Academic Centre for Dent
