Insurance is essential for managing risk and is a key part of a good financial plan, and insurance needs evolve as radiologists progress through their careers. This review discusses personal insurance for radiologists, organized around the products most critical to long-term financial security: disability insurance, life insurance, and umbrella liability coverage, followed by an overview of property insurance and emerging exposures such as cyber and identity theft. The review also addresses when specific insurance products become less necessary as assets accumulate over a career. The goal is t

BACKGROUND: In 2019, 1 in every 10 infants born in the United States was preterm. Prematurity has life-threatening consequences and causes a range of developmental disabilities, of which learning disability is a prevalent complication. Despite the availability of special services for children living with learning disability, gaps still exist in terms of access due to socioeconomic factors. The aim of this study is to evaluate socioeconomic and sociodemographic correlates of learning disability in preterm children.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2016-2018 National Surve

Some proposals to change the Social Security program to ensure long-run solvency would reduce or eliminate benefits for early retirees. This article documents the health and financial resources of Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) beneficiaries aged 62-64. It identifies a substantial minority of early retirees who might be economically vulnerable if either the early eligibility age or normal retirement age was raised. Attention is directed at the extent to which poor health limits work in this age group and the extent to which curtailment of early OASI benefits might lead to increases in

Persons with a disability are at a far higher risk of homelessness than those without. The economic, social and health challenges faced by disabled people are addressed, in Australia, by the recently implemented National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using nationally representative, longitudinal household panel data, we construct the Index of Relative Homelessness Risk (IRHR) to track how the risk of homelessness for disabled persons has changed since the introduction of the NDIS. We find that, overall, fewer persons with a disability face moderate risk of homelessness but that many more

This is the final in a series of three papers addressing common occupational disability entitlements from an Ontario motor vehicle accident (MVA) perspective, which are also applicable to long-term disability cases. The first paper supported using a holistic model in the assessment of accident injured persons who are unable to return to the pre-accident occupation (pre- 104 disability/"own occupation") because of accident-caused impairments. The second paper discussed case law, best practice and the Post-104 Week IRB Disability ("any occupation") test and demonstrated the difficulties individu

In this study more than 1,000 cases of long-term disability among members of the press and media were evaluated. Mental disorders were the main cause of disability in almost every fourth case. In women psychiatric illnesses were even more important. The most common diagnosis was that of a depressive disorder which accounted for more than half of all psychiatric cases. The causes of disability of other insurance systems such as the German social security scheme and the pension and disability plan for the medical profession were compared. Mental illnesses are the leading cause of disability in w

OBJECTIVE: Abusive head trauma is the leading cause of physical abuse deaths in children under the age of 5 and is associated with severe long-lasting health problems and developmental disabilities. This study evaluates the long-term impact of AHT and identifies factors associated with poor long-term outcomes (LTOs).
METHODS: We used the Truven Health MarketScan Research Claims Database (2000-2015) to identify children diagnosed with AHT and follow them up until they turn 5. We identified the incidence of behavioral disorders, communication deficits, developmental delays, epilepsy, learning d

BACKGROUND: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) affects 64-74 million people annually, often causing long-term disability. The influence of social determinants of health (SDOH), particularly neighborhood and built environments, on functional outcomes post-TBI remains underexplored. This study examines the association between census tract-level median household income- a proxy for area income- and self-reported functional outcomes in TBI-patients seen in a Southern California TBI clinic.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of Neurology TBI & Concussion Clinic data (9/2022-1/2025) included patients

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices increasingly generate longitudinal data on physical activity, sleep, heart rate, falls, and other behavioral or physiological parameters. In insurance and legal medicine, these data may appear attractive as real-world evidence of functional capacity, disability, recovery, rehabilitation adherence, claimant behavior, or legally relevant factual circumstances. Their apparent objectivity, however, raises complex medico-legal questions.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review examines the potential evidentiary value and medico-legal limitations of wearable-derived data in in

OBJECTIVES: South Korea's National Health Insurance has provided hearing aids to registered individuals with hearing disabilities since 1989. In 2015, hearing aid subsidies increased to approximately US$1,000. This study aimed to understand hearing loss categories in Korea by analyzing patients between 2010 and 2020 and the effect of the 2015 hearing aid policy change on the prevalence of hearing loss.
METHODS: The participants were patients registered on the National Health Insurance Service database from 2010 to 2020 with hearing loss. A total of 5,784,429 patients were included in this stu

The aim of the study is to analyze the characteristics of patients with rheumatic diseases applying for a Disability Certificate (DC). Every application for DC filed by patients of 16 years of age and older in the Health Secretariat of Junin, between 2012 and 2016, was analyzed regarding age, gender, rheumatic disease as the cause of disability, employment status, and health insurance coverage. Applications were examined as per two elements: inflammatory articular or systemic disease (IASD) versus degenerative diseases, regional or generalized pain syndromes (non-IASD). Based on the DCs accept

In France, "social insurance" is less comprehensive as concerns the independent workers that the salaried employees. Voluntary insurance is therefore a subject of crucial importance for physicians, the large majority of them being in private practice. In 1993, nearly 70% or 75% of French GP's are voluntarily insured against one risk or an other. The older generations have seemingly a lower providence level than the younger. As concerns the "vital" risks (death, disability) the insurance rate is higher among men. For the "minor" risks (e.g. income loss due to illness) women have a higher insura
