Hospitalisations for emergency-sensitive conditions in Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from the German-wide Helios hospital network.

BACKGROUND: While there are numerous reports that describe emergency care during the early COVID-19 pandemic, there is scarcity of data for later stages. This study analyses hospitalisation rates for 37 emergency-sensitive conditions in the largest German-wide hospital network during different pandemic phases. METHODS: Using claims data of 80 hospitals, consecutive cases between 1 January and 17 November 2020 were analysed and compared with a corresponding period in 2019. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) comparing the two periods were calculated using Poisson regression to model the number of hos

Closed Claims Analysis of Data for Ambulatory Anesthesia.

Ambulatory anesthesia has grown rapidly, encompassing more complex procedures and higher-risk patients. Analysis of closed claims reveals that while major complications and mortality remain rare, moderate injuries such as dental trauma, nerve damage, and communication-related issues are frequent and remained largely stable in frequency over the past decade. Patient comorbidities-including obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, and diabetes-significantly increase perioperative risks. Improving patient safety in this setting depends on careful risk assessment, multimodal analgesia, opioid-sparing tec

Use of physician billing claims to identify infections in children.

While medical records have detailed information, they are limited in reach to the availability and accessibility of those records. On the other hand, administrative data while limited in scope, have a much further reach in coverage of an entire population. However, few studies have validated the use of administrative data for identifying infections in pediatric populations. Pediatric patients from Ontario, Canada aged <18 years were randomly sampled from the Electronic Medical Record Administrative data Linked Database (EMRALD). Using physician diagnoses from the electronic medical record (EMR

A detailed audit of reimbursement for abdominal CT in an academic practice.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Declining fee schedules, decreasing operating margins, and increasingly stringent compliance regulations create a need for intense scrutiny and optimization of a radiology organization's billing and collection procedures. The authors' goal was to analyze the effectiveness of departmental professional billing procedures, identify controllable factors, and intervene when they could be improved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A detailed audit of professional claims and payments was performed for all patients who underwent abdominal-pelvic computed tomography (CT) during July 19

How Should We Identify Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) in Medicaid Claims Data? An Evaluation and Synthesis of Algorithms.

OBJECTIVE: To assess existing algorithms for measuring Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) in Medicaid claims, and to develop and evaluate a unified, modified algorithm. STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: Using Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System Analytic Files (TAF), we compared two existing algorithms for identifying and classifying 1915(c) waiver and state plan HCBS. Informed by that analysis, we developed a third, unified and modified algorithm. Using each algorithm, we constructed annual state-level estimates of HCBS use per 100,000 residents, which we compared from 2021 to

Claims-Based Analysis of National Utilization Patterns and Regional Variability of Prostate Cancer Ablative Therapies: A Medicare Study.

BACKGROUND: Focal ablative therapy is an alternative treatment option for selected patients with prostate cancer. Despite growing interest, its initial adoption in the United States has been limited, and its real-world utilization remains insufficiently characterized at the national level. With recent expansions in Medicare coverage, we aimed to use national claims data to analyze the utilization patterns and regional variability in ablative therapies across the United States. METHODS: We analyzed 100% Medicare claims data to identify patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer from 2019 to
