The Importance of Recruitment of Low-Income Pregnant Persons in Interdisciplinary Research to Understand the Impact of Social and Environmental Determinants: Lessons Learned About Implementation and Recruitment.

BACKGROUND: Prior research indicates that enrolling underrepresented populations in clinical research is challenging. Although research has identified some barriers to participation and strategies to overcome them, studies have made little progress in being inclusive and representative. There remains a great need for including racial/ethnic minorities, low-income families, and pregnant women in research. The purpose of this article is to describe the implementation of enrollment strategies used in our study to understand the feasibility of building a maternal cohort and better understand the r

[Diagnosis of inherited diseases of platelet function. Interdisciplinary S2K guideline of the Permanent Paediatric Committee of the Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research (GTH e. V.)].

Congenital disorders of platelet function are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are often not detected until bleeding occurs. In clinical settings only a few methods have proven to be useful for identification and classification of inherited platelet disorders. For a rational diagnostic approach, a stepwise algorithm is recommended. Patient history and clinical investigation are mandatory. Von Willebrand disease and other coagulation disorders should always be ruled out prior to specific platelet testing. Platelet count, size, volume (MPV) and morphology may guide further investigations.

Linking dietary patterns to Alzheimer's disease biomarkers with network mathematical modeling could enable new approach methodologies in preventative AD research: a narrative interdisciplinary review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a significant global health concern. With no reliable pharmaceutical treatments on the horizon, the best path forward is preventative. Dietary patterns are related to one third of AD risk factors and have long been thought to influence the onset or the progression of AD. Studies of the preventative possibilities of diet on AD offer the prospect of helping to suppress AD prevalence until effective pharmaceutical interventions are discovered but can be challenging due to variations, duration, cost or ethical considerations presented by human and animal studies. At the

Competence network inflammatory bowel diseases in Germany: 25 years of interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research and knowledge transfer across all levels of IBD care.

The Competence Network Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Kompetenznetz Darmerkrankungen) was established in Germany in 1999 through a 10-year funding programme by the German Ministry of Education and Research. It was created to address the growing gap between the rising prevalence and therapeutic complexity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the fragmented care structures and isolated academic initiatives of the time. The network's continuing mission is to improve care for patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by more closely integrating clinical practice, translational science

Interoperable, Domain-Specific Extensions for the German Corona Consensus (GECCO) COVID-19 Research Data Set Using an Interdisciplinary, Consensus-Based Workflow: Data Set Development Study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred large-scale, interinstitutional research efforts. To enable these efforts, researchers must agree on data set definitions that not only cover all elements relevant to the respective medical specialty but also are syntactically and semantically interoperable. Therefore, the German Corona Consensus (GECCO) data set was developed as a harmonized, interoperable collection of the most relevant data elements for COVID-19-related patient research. As the GECCO data set is a compact core data set comprising data across all medical fields, the focused resea

Prevention of rheumatic fever and diagnosis and treatment of acute Streptococcal pharyngitis: a scientific statement from the American Heart Association Rheumatic Fever, Endocarditis, and Kawasaki Disease Committee of the Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young, the Interdisciplinary Council on Functional Genomics and Translational Biology, and the Interdisciplinary Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research: endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Primary prevention of acute rheumatic fever is accomplished by proper identification and adequate antibiotic treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GAS) tonsillopharyngitis. Diagnosis of GAS pharyngitis is best accomplished by combining clinical judgment with diagnostic test results, the criterion standard of which is the throat culture. Penicillin (either oral penicillin V or injectable benzathine penicillin) is the treatment of choice, because it is cost-effective, has a narrow spectrum of activity, and has long-standing proven efficacy, and GAS resistant to penicillin have not b

The clinical and integrated management of COPD. An official document of AIMAR (Interdisciplinary Association for Research in Lung Disease), AIPO (Italian Association of Hospital Pulmonologists), SIMER (Italian Society of Respiratory Medicine), SIMG (Italian Society of General Medicine).

COPD is a chronic pathological condition of the respiratory system characterized by persistent and partially reversible airflow obstruction, to which variably contribute remodeling of bronchi (chronic bronchitis), bronchioles (small airway disease) and lung parenchyma (pulmonary emphysema). COPD can cause important systemic effects and be associated with complications and comorbidities. The diagnosis of COPD is based on the presence of respiratory symptoms and/or a history of exposure to risk factors, and the demonstration of airflow obstruction by spirometry. GARD of WHO has defined COPD "a p

How to Foster Challenging Interdisciplinary Collaborations: Can Philosophy Support Neuroscientists?

New conceptual and technological developments bring neuroscientists closer to other disciplines and other fields in neuroscience with different traditions. Although some neuroscientists may underrate the potential benefits of successful interdisciplinary collaborations, others may be unaware of the typical difficulties of such collaborations or are not trained in skills that render them fruitful. Here, we argue that interdisciplinary interactions have long been part of neuroscience, although they are often challenging, because neuroscientists may be confronted with concepts, assumptions, and i

Longitudinal impact of distinct infection trajectories on all-cause mortality of older people in Taiwan: a retrospective, nationwide, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of deaths in adults aged 65 years or older. Studies of adverse infection outcomes have been limited to specific infections and acute episodes and have not investigated longitudinal trends of cumulative infections. We aimed to identify distinct trajectories of longitudinal infection episodes in older adults and to assess their corresponding risk of all-cause mortality. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included people aged 65 years or older who were admitted to hospital between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2011, with one of the following

Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Summit 2019: National Research Priorities for the Investigation of Traumatic Brain Injury as a Risk Factor for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a risk factor for later-life dementia. Clinical and pre-clinical studies have elucidated multiple mechanisms through which TBI may influence or exacerbate multiple pathological processes underlying Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). The National Institutes of Health hosts triennial ADRD Summits to inform a national research agenda, and the 2019 ADRD Summit was the first to highlight "TBI and AD/ADRD Risk" as an emerging topic in the field. A multidisciplinary committee of TBI researchers with relevant expertise reviewed exta
