Good Agreement between an Interferon Gamma Release Assay and Tuberculin Skin Tests in Testing for Latent Tuberculosis Infection among HIV-Infected Patients in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection is a condition where there is a persistent immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis without clinical manifestations of tuberculosis. Currently, there is no gold standard to diagnose latent tuberculosis infection. The tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assay are currently used to diagnose latent tuberculosis infection. However, studies have shown inconsistencies regarding the level of agreement between these tests in different settings. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the agreement between these two tests for diagnosing latent tu

Methods Used in Economic Evaluations of Tuberculin Skin Tests and Interferon Gamma Release Assays for the Screening of Latent Tuberculosis Infection: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) provides a constant pool of new active tuberculosis cases; a third of the earth's population is estimated to be infected with LTBI. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review was to assess the quality and summarize the available evidence from published economic evaluations reporting on the cost-effectiveness of tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) compared with interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs) for the screening of LTBI. METHODS: An extensive systematic review of the published literature was conducted. A two-step process was adopted to i

Serial testing of latent tuberculosis infection in patients with diabetes mellitus using interferon-gamma release assay, tuberculin skin test, and creation tuberculin skin test.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) have an increased risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB) due to impaired immunity. The performance of currently available immune response-based assays for identification of TB infection had been rarely evaluated in patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) in China. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted to investigate the status of LTBI in patients with confirmed T2DM. At the baseline survey, the prevalence of LTBI was tested using interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), tuberculin skin test (TST) and creation

Interferon gamma release assay tests are associated with persistence and completion of latent tuberculosis infection treatment in the United States: Evidence from commercial insurance data.

BACKGROUND: Risk-targeted testing and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a critical component of the United States' (US) tuberculosis (TB) elimination strategy, but relatively low treatment completion rates remain a challenge. Both treatment persistence and completion may be facilitated by diagnosing LTBI using interferon gamma release assays (IGRA) rather than tuberculin skin tests (TST). METHODS: We used a national sample of administrative claims data to explore associations diagnostic test choice (TST, IGRA, TST with subsequent IGRA) and treatment persistence and completi

Comparison of the tuberculin skin test and interferon gamma release assay for the screening of tuberculosis in adolescents in close contact with tuberculosis TB patients.

BACKGROUND: The tuberculin skin test (TST) frequently yields false positive results among BCG-vaccinated persons thereby limiting its diagnostic value particularly in settings with high BCG vaccination rate. We determined the agreement between IGRA and TST using 2 cutoff values and identified possible relationships between the results of these tests and the development of active tuberculosis. METHODOLOGY: Adolescents aged 11-19 years in close contact with smear-positive tuberculosis cases and with normal chest radiographs were recruited from middle and high schools in South Korea. The TST was

Comparison of the interferon- gamma release assay and the tuberculin skin test for contact investigation of tuberculosis in BCG-vaccinated health care workers.

Health care workers are at increased risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The tuberculin skin test (TST) is frequently false positive in BCG-vaccinated health care workers. QuantiFERON-TB GOLD (QFT-G) is a sensitive and specific interferon-gamma release assay unaffected by BCG vaccination. This study compared TST and QFT-G in the diagnosis of latent TB infection in BCG-vaccinated health care workers. 39 health care workers exposed to a smear-positive TB patient were enrolled. Initial TST was positive in 33 (84.6%) cases, but only 4 (10.2%) cases using QFT-G. TST conversion occurred in

Comparative Agreement of Intradermal Tuberculin Test and Interferon-Gamma Release Assay in Bovine Tuberculosis Surveillance in Sicily, Italy (2024-2025).

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) remains endemic in southern Italy, particularly in Sicily, posing challenges for disease control and eradication. This study evaluated the diagnostic agreement between the intradermal tuberculin test (IDT), interferon-gamma release assay (IFN-γ), and post-mortem lesion detection in 1801 cattle from 44 herds in the province of Palermo during 2024-2025. Diagnostic agreement between IDT and IFN-γ was substantial in 2024 (κ = 0.731; 95% CI: 0.64-0.82; n = 991) and decreased to moderate in 2025 (κ = 0.453; 95% CI: 0.33-0.57; n = 572), reflecting a higher proportion of IFN-

Interferon-gamma release assay for the diagnosis of latent TB infection--analysis of discordant results, when compared to the tuberculin skin test.

BACKGROUND: With the Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) a new method for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infections (LTBI) is available. Due to the lack of a gold standard for the diagnosis of LTBI, the IGRA is compared to the Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), which yields discordant results in varying numbers. Therefore we assessed to which extent discordant results can be explained by potential risk factors such as age, BCG vaccination and migration. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this pooled analysis, two German studies evaluating the Quantiferon-Gold In-Tube test (QFT) by comparison

Predictive value of interferon-gamma release assays and tuberculin skin test for latent tuberculosis infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis of head-to-head comparative tests.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) to predict progression of latent tuberculosis (LTBI) to active tuberculosis. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for cohort studies published until October 6, 2024, that used both IGRA and TST to detect LTBI and reported data on active TB development. We assessed the predictive value of IGRA and TST for disease progression by calculating the risk ratio (RR), which compares the progression rates between positive and negative indi

Is the new tuberculous antigen-based skin test ready for use as an alternative to tuberculin skin test/interferon-gamma release assay for tuberculous diagnosis? A narrative review.

In recent years, novel specific Mycobacteria tuberculous (TB) antigen-based skin test (TBST) has become available for clinical use. The mechanism of TBST is similar to the interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), making it a potential alternative for identifying latent tuberculous infection (LTBI), especially in subjects with history of bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination. Three different commercial brands have been developed in Denmark, Russia, and China. Clinical studies in the respective countries have shown promising sensitivity, specificity, and safety profile. Some studies attempted to add
