Cascading Effects of the Family Context in Adolescence: Implications for Young Adult Antisocial Behavior and Intergenerational Transmission of Risk.

Inspired by the tremendous impact of Robert McMahon's career, this study evaluated an intergenerational cascade model in which young adult conduct problems may serve as a risk pathway linking generation 1 (G1) parenting and family climate in adolescence with generation 2 parenting quality and family climate with their children (G2-G3). Our sample included 396 parents (Mage = 28.3; 70% women; child Mage = 3.96, 48% girls) who have participated in the PROSPER study since they were in 6th grade. Our developmental model included a random intercept cross-lagged panel model assessing bidirectional r

Implications of intergenerational trauma: Associations between caregiver ACEs and child internalizing symptoms in an urban African American sample.

OBJECTIVE: The link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative mental health outcomes is well established. However, the intergenerational link between caregiver ACE history and their child's psychosocial outcomes is understudied, particularly within minoritized groups. This study aimed to delineate relations between caregiver ACE exposure and their child's depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms by proposing a serial mediation of caregiver PTSD, family management problems, and child ACEs. METHOD: Two hundred seventy-three caregiver (Mage = 39.27; 88% female

Active Aging for L.I.F.E.: An Intergenerational Program to Improve Adolescents' Aging Attitudes in Rural Communities.

Rural adolescents face persistent health inequities driven by limited access to preventive health education, intergenerational engagement, and resources that support lifelong wellness. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Active Aging for L.I.F.E., a school-based intergenerational health literacy program, in improving adolescents' attitudes toward aging and health. The four-session program, delivered through a train-the-trainer model involving older adults and undergraduate students, was implemented in three rural schools during the 2024-2025 academic year. A total of 86 junior high and h

Adverse childhood experiences lead to trans-generational transmission of early maladaptive schemas.

BACKGROUND: According to schema theory, early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are formed due to unsatisfied core emotional needs in childhood. However, there is limited research about the association between parent's EMS and the child's EMS. OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the mechanisms underlying the relationship between the parent's disconnection and rejection schemas and the child's disconnection and rejection schemas. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: One hundred seventy-nine mother-late adolescent dyads participated in the study. Mothers filled out the forms at home, and adolescents compl

Internalizing elders' life journeys: Activating humanism in intergenerational teaching programs - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Taiwan's rapidly aging population and evolving family structures have reduced opportunities for intergenerational interaction, creating a need for innovative educational strategies that promote mutual understanding and humanistic values among future healthcare professionals. AIM: This study aimed to cultivate nursing students' humanistic caring literacy by facilitating meaningful engagement with older adults to deepen their understanding of aging, life experiences, and intergenerational emotional connections. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted between March and July 2018.

Further Findings on the Intergenerational Transmission of Alcohol Consumption.

Using 43,817 parent-child pairs from 23 waves of the HILDA Survey, I study the intergenerational transmission of alcohol use within a rational model of trait transmission. Transmission is predominantly same-sex: the mother-daughter elasticity is 0.10 and the father-son elasticity is 0.09; there is no father-daughter effect. Influence peaks at ages 15-17 and re-emerges at 28-37 when offspring become parents; mothers also affect sons at both junctures. Comparisons with non-birth (adoptee-style) dyads show similar mother-daughter transmission, indicating norm-based rather than biological channels

Intergenerational homesharing between older adults and university students: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Housing needs for older people wishing to age in place and university students are different, yet both groups face unmet needs. To support older adults to remain in their homes longer, many countries have policies for aging in place with in-home support. Housing affordability, a growing issue globally, leaves older adults and students vulnerable to homelessness or precarious housing. This scoping review aimed to explore the concept of intergenerational homesharing, where older adults share their home with a student. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the Joanna Brig

Transgenerational trauma and schema therapy: Imagery rescripting and chairwork in practice.

INTRODUCTION: Transgerational transmitted trauma is the transmission of psychological injuries between generations. This article uses two case vignettes to explore selected schema therapy approaches that help clients process transgenerationally transmitted trauma from their ancestors. Specific methods of imagery rescripting and chair work enable clients to transform maladaptive patterns of experiencing into healthier coping strategies, support better stress management, improve emotional regulation and communication in relationships, and encourage more profound relationships with themselves and

Measuring sensitivity moment-by-moment: microanalytic look at the transmission of attachment.

Meta-analyses have indicated that the mediating power of sensitivity in the transmission of attachment across generations is not nearly as great as would be predicted by attachment theory (van IJzendoorn, 1995; De Wolff & van IJzendoorn, 1997). To make sense of these findings, the author suggests that current measures of sensitivity should be expanded to include the assessment of mother-infant behavior on a micro-behavioral level. This paper reviews evidence for two central propositions: (1) The internal working model of mothers is expressed in subtle, fine-grained interactive behaviors with t

Coincubation of sperm with epididymal extracellular vesicle preparations from chronic intermittent ethanol-treated mice is sufficient to impart anxiety-like and ethanol-induced behaviors to adult progeny.

We previously reported that paternal preconception chronic ethanol exposure in mice imparts adult male offspring with reduced ethanol drinking preference and consumption, increased ethanol sensitivity, and attenuated stress responsivity. That same chronic ethanol exposure paradigm was later revealed to affect the sperm epigenome by altering the abundance of several small noncoding RNAs, a mechanism that mediates the intergenerational effects of numerous paternal environmental exposures. Although recent studies have revealed that the unique RNA signature of sperm is shaped during maturation in

'Saying goodbye'. . . A systematic integrative review of palliative caregiving in intergenerational living contexts.

BACKGROUND: Intergenerational co-residence has historically been prevalent. Recent financial pressures, increasing caregiving responsibilities and ageing populations have led to a resurgence of this arrangement, particularly in end-of-life care. However, understanding of its influence on care quality across cultures remains limited. AIM: To explore how intergenerational co-residence affects emotional, practical, and cultural dimensions of palliative and end-of-life care across different settings, and to identify key themes shaping caregiving roles, decision-making, and support needs in these

Bearing the unbearable: ancestral transmission through dreams and moving metaphors in the analtyic field.

This paper explores how untold and unresolved intergenerational trauma may be transmitted through unconscious channels of communication, manifesting in the dreams of descendants. Unwitting carriers for that which was too horrific for their ancestors to bear, descendants may enter analysis through an unconscious need to uncover past secrets, piece together ancestral histories before the keys to comprehending their terrible inheritance die with their forebears. They seek the relational containment of the analytic relationship to provide psychological conditions to bear the unbearable, know the u

Parental depressive symptoms and child psychopathology: Indirect effects of parenting-specific emotion regulation and emotion socialization.

OBJECTIVE: The study explores the associations among parental depressive symptoms, child symptoms of psychopathology, emotion socialization (ES), and parenting-specific emotion regulation (ER) using a novel measure, the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS). BACKGROUND: There is a notable correlation between parental depressive symptoms and symptoms of psychopathology in children. Empirical studies have also observed a correlation in the intergenerational patterns of ER, as well as their relations to ES. Investigating these relations in nonclinical samples is vital for understanding t

Using Twitter to Understand COVID-19 Vaccine-Related Ageism During the Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During the rollout of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, older adults in high-income countries were often prioritized for inoculation in efforts to reduce COVID-19-related mortality. However, this prioritization may have contributed to intergenerational tensions and ageism, particularly with the limited supply of COVID-19 vaccines. This study examines Twitter discourse to understand vaccine-related ageism during the COVID-19 pandemic to inform future vaccination policies and practices to reduce ageism. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We collected 1,369 relevant twee

[The elderly in traffic--future aspects].

In 1976 and 1982 two surveys about traffic and public transportation in the Federal Republic of Germany were undertaken. Four aspects which are meaningful for gerontological research are presented, i.e. possession of a driving license, ownership of a car, availability of a car in the own household and preferred transportation. The data are given for different age groups. These four aspects can be regarded as indicators for motor mobility. Far more people in younger age groups are in possession of a driving license than in older age groups. The same can be shown for the ownership and availabili

The relationship between family communication networks and elderly loneliness: A structural equation modeling approach across three generations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Loneliness is a widespread challenge among older adults, often linked to negative health outcomes. This study explores how family communications among individual members representing three generations is associated with loneliness in elderly participants, aiming to clarify which family relationships are most impactful. METHODS: Using partial least squares structural equation modeling, we examined the effects of marital intimacy in both the older generation (G1) and their adult children (G2), as well as broader family factors such as intergenerational solidarity, fami

The intergenerational transmission of violence: examining the mediating roles of insecure attachment and destructive disagreement beliefs.

Intimate partner violence has been recognized as a major problem on college campuses and is a source of concern for researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general population. Most research has focused on the intergenerational transmission of violence and identifying the intrapersonal mechanisms that enable violence in the family of origin to carry over to adult intimate relationships. This study expands the current literature by examining insecure attachment styles and destructive disagreement beliefs as mediators in the relationship between exposure to hostility or aggression in the f

Couples' experiences of grandparenthood: Grandchild-related bliss and psychological well-being.

Building on family systems theory and lifespan views on aging, the present study investigates how the experiences of grandchild-related bliss (i.e., the subjective fulfillment and joy of having a grandchild) are related to grandparental couples' partnership-related and general well-being. We hypothesized both (a) actor effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with this grandparent's well-being) and (b) partner effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with the partner's well-being). We used the actor-partner interde

You are a Mirror of My Childhood: Pathways Through Family Dyadic Interactions and Gender Preference in the Intergenerational Association of ODD Symptoms.

We examined the intergenerational association of ODD symptoms between parents and child offspring, elaborating a model whereby parental childhood ODD symptoms influence their children's ODD symptoms through dyadic interactions within the current family system. The sample included 731 children (aged 6-11, 64.3% boys) and their parents. In a sample of Chinese families, parents reported their childhood ODD symptoms and their marital quality, their negative parenting practices, and their children's ODD symptoms at T1 and T2, about half a year apart. Results indicated that parents' childhood ODD sy
