Basophils are important effector cells in allergic disorders and anti-parasitic immune response. PROBLEM: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is similar to vascular leak syndrome (VLS), which may be attributable to the massive increase in systemic inflammatory cytokines. The hyperstimulated human ovaries were demonstrated to contain interleukin (IL)-2, which, in turn, was suggested to activate the systemic inflammatory response characteristic of OHSS. Clinical studies with Interleukin-2 (IL-2) in human hematologic malignancies were initiated in the late 1980s. Based on clinical studies on various solid tumors, and laboratory research on hematopoietic cells, IL-2 was shown to be effective in 150 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients mainly for maintenance therapy in first complete remission, or with residual blast cells in the marrow. Copper is an essential nutrient for optimal function of the immune system; deficiency results in impairment of both humoral and cell-mediated components. Copper deficiency in rodents results in decreased numbers of CD4+ (helper) and total T cells. This defect has been traced to impaired production of interleukin-2, a cytokine essential for T-cell division and differentiation. Impairment of quiescent cell proliferation is reversed by both in vivo and in vitro copper supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Cytokines are of increasing interest as markers for stress responses, mental disorders and general health. We assessed associations of two cytokines with several factors among relocated hurricane survivors and controls.
METHODS: We examined 40 relocated hurricane survivors and 40 demographically matched (frequency matching) Oklahoma controls to assess relationships of Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) with psychiatric diagnoses (SCID-IV), demographic variables, hurricane exposure and body mass index (BMI). PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between serum SIL-2R levels and uveitis.
METHODS: SIL-2R levels were measured in sera of 64 patients with active uveitis by ELISA assay, 61 healthy subjects as control.
RESULTS: Serum SIL-2R levels in the patients with active uveitis were significantly higher than that in the controls, but there were no significant difference among anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, Behcet disease and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome. After therapy the serum SIL-2R levels were obviously decreased.
