Intermittent fasting and mental and physical fatigue in obese and non-obese rats.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an alternating pattern of restricting eating. This study evaluated mental and physical fatigue secondary to IF (daily 18-hour fast, 7-days-a-week) in the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced male obese Sprague Dawley rats. Fifty-four rats were randomly assigned to a HFD (n = 28) or a standard diet (SD; n = 26). After six weeks, the HFD rats were divided into one of four groups: obese HFD ad libitum (OB-HFD-AL), obese HFD-IF (OB-HFD-IF), obese SD-AL (OB-SD-AL), and obese SD-IF (OB-SD-IF). Similarly, non-obese controls were grouped into HFD-AL (C-HFD-AL), non-obese HFD-IF (C-

Intermittent fasting inhibits Tp53-driven glioma through gut microbiota-mediated methionine-m6A regulation.

Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a potential cancer treatment modality, although its tumor-suppressive effects are limited. Glioblastoma (GBM) can be classified into CDKN2A subtype and TP53 subtype. Here, we discover that the efficacy of IF is correlated with tumor subtypes of GBM. IF significantly inhibite GBM progression in mice with the Tp53 GBM model, whereas its inhibitory effect is not significant in the Cdkn2a GBM model. Multi-omics sequencing is performed in the IF-responsive Tp53 GBM mouse model, delineating a comprehensive molecular profiling of IF that including the spatial

Unveiling the Hidden Dangers of Intermittent Fasting in Adolescents: A Call for Awareness.

Intermittent fasting (IF) has attained considerable popularity, often advocated as an effective treatment for weight control and metabolic well-being. Recent studies, however, underscore potential negative effects linked to intermittent fasting in teenagers. Research conducted by experts from the Technical University of Munich, LMU Hospital Munich, and Helmholtz Munich indicates that fasting in adolescence hinders the growth of pancreatic beta cells, adversely affecting insulin synthesis and increasing the risk of metabolic disorders. Intermittent fasting modifies essential physiological funct

Intermittent Fasting Reduces Intestinal Inflammation in Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis of Mice.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is a chronic condition impacting both the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. Intestinal inflammation and epithelial injury are the pathological features of IBD. Recent studies have reported that some strategies of dietary restriction (DR) can regulate immune system, correct the immune disorders, and improve some immune-associated diseases such as IBD. However, as a form of DR, the effect of intermittent fasting (IF) on the IBD remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic

Sensor-based evaluation of intermittent fasting regimes: a machine learning and statistical approach.

The primary aim was to develop and assess the performance and applicability of different models utilizing sensor data to determine dietary adherence, specifically within the context of intermittent fasting. Our approach utilized time-series data from two completed human trials, which included continuous glucose monitoring, acceleration data, and food diaries, and a synthetic data set. Machine learning models achieved an average F1-score of 0.88 in distinguishing between fasting and non-fasting times, indicating a high level of reliability in classifying fasting states. Intermittent Fasting Improves Social Interaction and Decreases Inflammatory Markers in Cortex and Hippocampus.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by reduced social interaction, anxiety, and stereotypic behaviors related to neuroinflammation and microglia activation. We demonstrated that maternal exposure to Western diet (cafeteria diet or CAF) induced microglia activation, systemic proinflammatory profile, and ASD-like behavior in the offspring. Here, we aimed to identify the effect of alternate day fasting (ADF) as a non-pharmacologic strategy to modulate neuroinflammation and ASD-like behavior in the offspring prenatally exposed to CAF diet. We found that ADF incr

Intermittent fasting with ketogenic diet: A combination approach for management of chronic diseases.

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is the consumption of food and drinks within a defined time, while the ketogenic diet (KD) switches the metabolism from glucose to fats. Continuation of intermittent fasting leads to the generation of ketones, the exact mechanism for a ketogenic diet. This article discusses the types of IF and KD, the monitoring required, and the mechanisms underlying IF and KD, followed by disorders in which the combination strategy could be applied. The strategies for successfully applying combination therapy are included, along with recommendations for the primary care physicians (

Thermogenesis-independent metabolic benefits conferred by isocaloric intermittent fasting in ob/ob mice.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an effective dietary intervention to counteract obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities. Previously, we and others have highlighted white adipose tissue (WAT) browning as the main underlying mechanism of IF-mediated metabolic benefits. However, whether IF retains its efficacy in different models, such as genetically obese/diabetic animals, is unknown. Here, leptin-deficient ob/ob mice were subjected to 16 weeks of isocaloric IF, and comprehensive metabolic phenotyping was conducted to assess the metabolic effects of IF. Unlike our previous study, isocaloric IF-s

A Comprehensive Perspective on the Biological Effects of Intermittent Fasting and Periodic Short-Term Fasting: A Promising Strategy for Optimizing Metabolic Health.

It is well established that different fasting strategies offer a range of benefits and may even serve as potential therapeutic approaches for metabolic diseases. The biological effects of intermittent fasting (IF) are multidimensional, involving the induction of metabolic switching from glucose to fatty acid and ketone utilization, thereby enhancing fat metabolism and improving glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. In addition, IF modulates the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor 1 (GH/IGF-1) axis by lowering IGF-1 levels, a change associated with enhanced cellular protection, reduc

Intermittent fasting promotes remodeling of neural and vascular networks in visceral white adipose tissue.

Intermittent fasting (IF) improves metabolic health, in part by remodeling white adipose tissue (WAT), yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that IF induces coordinated neurovascular remodeling in visceral WAT, marked by increased angiogenesis and sympathetic innervation. Using tissue clearing and three-dimensional imaging, we find that a 16-week IF regimen increases vascular density and sympathetic nerve fiber branching in perigonadal WAT. Transcriptomic profiling reveals the upregulation of neurotrophic factors, including neuregulin 4 (Nrg4), and browning-associated gen

Effect of intermittent fasting on hepatic steatosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is marked by hepatic steatosis. While intermittent fasting (IF) lowers weight and lipids in obesity, its effect on MASLD-related liver fat remains unclear. METHODS: We searched the databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase to find studies for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 17.0 were used to perform the meta-analysis, and the results were reported as mean difference (MD) or standardized mean d

Intermittent fasting and cardiometabolic responses under cardiac stress: a systematic review of preclinical studies.

Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a dietary strategy with benefits that extend beyond weight management and glycemic control. Although growing evidence supports its favorable effects on cardiometabolic health, the impact of IF under conditions of cardiac stress remains poorly characterized. Since clinical trials cannot ethically expose patients to acute cardiac stress during IF protocols, preclinical models are essential to elucidate its potential cardioprotective mechanisms. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the preclinical evidence on the effects of IF in models of cardiac st

Sex- and Ketogenesis-Dependent Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Diet-Induced Fatty Liver Disease.

We investigated whether ketogenesis is required for the metabolic benefits of intermittent fasting (IF) and whether these effects differ between sexes. We specifically asked whether ketogenesis drives IF-mediated protection against obesity and fatty liver disease in male and female mice. We found that IF reduced adiposity independently of ketogenesis in both sexes, but its antisteatotic and antifibrotic effects were ketogenesis-dependent in male mice and minimal in female mice. These findings reveal a sex-dependent ketogenesis-inflammation-fibrosis axis and highlight the need to consider sex a

Effects of Aerobic Exercise and Intermittent Fasting on Fecal Microbiome Diversity in Obese Mice.

BACKGROUND: Obesity threatens human health, and interventions to reduce obesity may have important effects on the gut microbiota. This study investigated alterations in gut microbial composition in response to aerobic exercise (AE) and intermittent fasting (IF). METHODS: We randomly divided mice into four groups of seven mice each: normal, obesity, exercise, and fasting. The normal group was fed a Chow Diet, whereas the other three groups were fed a High Fat Diet (HFD). After 13 weeks, the exercise group was subjected to aerobic treadmill running, and the fasting group started IF for 8 weeks.
