Intestinal parasites may be associated with later behavioral problems in internationally adopted children.

AIM: At arrival in new home country, internationally adopted children often have intestinal parasites. International adoptees also exhibit more behavioral problems than their biological peers. We examined whether intestinal parasite infections in international adoptees on arrival in Finland are associated with their later behavioral and emotional problems. METHODS: Data for this study were sourced from the Finnish Adoption Study (FinAdo) based on parental questionnaires for all internationally adopted children under 18 years (n = 1450) who arrived in Finland from 1985 to 2007. A total of 1293

The GOLIATH Project: Towards an Internationally Harmonised Approach for Testing Metabolism Disrupting Compounds.

The purpose of this project report is to introduce the European "GOLIATH" project, a new research project which addresses one of the most urgent regulatory needs in the testing of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), namely the lack of methods for testing EDCs that disrupt metabolism and metabolic functions. These chemicals collectively referred to as "metabolism disrupting compounds" (MDCs) are natural and anthropogenic chemicals that can promote metabolic changes that can ultimately result in obesity, diabetes, and/or fatty liver in humans. This project report introduces the main approache

Infectious diseases detected by screening after arrival to Denmark in internationally adopted children.

AIM: To show the prevalence of selected infectious diseases among internationally adopted children (IAC) in Denmark. BACKGROUND: Each year approximately 200 IAC arrive in Denmark. These are at increased risk of infectious diseases rarely seen in Danish children. Studies from the 1990s showed that 60% of IAC had infectious diseases and that the majority of these were undetected without screening. METHODS: The study is a prospective study of medical records from children seen in the adoption clinic at Copenhagen University Hospital in the period 2009-2013. Screening was done for hepatitis A (H

[Comparison of the effectiveness of two internationally recommended screening methods for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes].

INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis and adequate care of gestational diabetes is of great importance for both the mother and her fetus. Although several national and international guidelines are known on the methodology for screening gestational diabetes, a not negligible part of the cases remain unrecognized when applying even the most widely used criteria recommended by the World Health Organization (1st recommendation). A connection has been found between the maternal blood glucose values and the prevalence of still-birth, preeclampsia and large for gestational age neonates in several studies, fr

Developing internationally agreed core indicators for surveillance of preconception health: protocol for a consensus study.

BACKGROUND: Interventions and policies to optimise preconception health are increasing internationally. This stems from growing recognition that improving preconception health can improve maternal and child health outcomes and advance equity by reducing inequalities and address inequities for people of reproductive age and any children they may have. Interventions and policies should be evaluated through population-level surveillance of preconception health to inform the development of new initiatives, monitor effectiveness, and support advocacy for international adoption of successful strateg

Ethical Challenges for Plastic Surgery in Treating Internationally Adopted Children With Cleft Lip and Palate.

A large number of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) were adopted to Sweden in the last decade, mainly from China. Most of the children arrived with unoperated palates and at later ages than earlier years. This article aims to present an overview of ethical challenges within the practice of international adoption of children with CLP from the perspective of plastic surgery in a welfare health care system. An overview of CLP treatment is presented, followed by a normative discussion and ethical analysis using the 4 principles of Beauchamp and Childress: non-maleficence, beneficence, auton

Early adversity, hypocortisolism, and behavior problems at school entry: A study of internationally adopted children.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is influenced by early life adversity; however, less is known about the potential for recovery following marked improvements in care. The present study examined longitudinal changes in children's cortisol reactivity in the laboratory (4 assessments over 2 years) after adoption. Post-institutionalized (N=65) and post-foster care children (N=49) demonstrated blunted reactivity relative to non-adopted peers (N=53). Furthermore, post-institutionalized children exhibited no evidence of expected adaptation to repeated sessions in the 2 years following ad

Development of an internationally agreed minimal dataset for juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) for clinical and research use.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality. International collaboration is necessary to better understand the pathogenesis of the disease, response to treatment and long-term outcome. To aid international collaboration, it is essential to have a core set of data that all researchers and clinicians collect in a standardised way for clinical purposes and for research. This should include demographic details, diagnostic data and measures of disease activity, investigations and treatment. Variables in ex

The role of chest radiographs and tuberculin skin tests in tuberculosis screening of internationally adopted children.

BACKGROUND: Internationally adopted children (IAC) are a growing group of US immigrants who often come from countries with high tuberculosis (TB) burdens. There is limited evidence to support current TB screening guidelines in these high-risk children. Therefore, we have prospectively examined the clinical utility of tuberculin skin testing (TST) and subsequent chest radiograph screening for TB disease in recently immigrated, asymptomatic IAC. METHODS: Within 6 months of immigration to the United States, we collected demographic information and assessed the nutritional status of 566 IAC who p

A Dutch day treatment program for anorexia and bulimia nervosa in comparison with internationally described programs.

A Dutch day treatment program for patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa is described and compared to intensive day treatment programs for patients with eating disorders outlined in international literature. The 5-day program is described in terms of its general characteristics, intended outcome and specific treatment interventions. Along these parameters it is compared to the programs found in a systematic literature search of day hospitalization programs for eating disorders. Global inspection shows a lot of similarities between all the programs. Looking more closely, also many important

Elevated blood lead levels among internationally adopted children--United States, 1998.

Lead poisoning has been reported recently among Chinese children adopted by U.S. citizens. However, little is known about the prevalence of elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) among adoptees from China and other countries. Persistent sources of lead exposure outside the United States include leaded gasoline exhaust; industrial emissions; cottage industries (e.g., battery breaking and recycling plants); traditional medicines; and some cosmetics, ceramic ware, and foods. In 1998, approximately 15,000 orphans from countries outside the United States who were adopted abroad or were to be adopted in

Internationally studied parameters related to the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nursing homes were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Standardised parameters are essential to understand and monitor the unintended consequences of pandemic control measures and changes in work processes. In this scoping review, we aimed to identify COVID-19-related parameters studied in nursing homes that could form a minimum data set suitable for database development. We focused on the perspectives of all interest-holders: facilities, residents, their relatives and nursing home staff. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and CINAHL and included quantitative studies published i

Reforming licensure pathways for internationally educated nurses in Canada: A comparative analysis of four provinces.

BACKGROUND: Amid longstanding nursing shortages, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, federal, provincial, and territorial governments across Canada prioritized the recruitment of internationally educated nurses (IENs). As a result, nursing regulators were strongly encouraged to implement a range of policy shifts to reduce licensure barriers. The nature and scope of these reforms have varied across jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare the policy processes, drivers, and outcomes of IEN licensure reforms in the Canadian jurisdictions of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova

Tuberculosis in Internationally Displaced Children Resettling in Harris County, Texas, USA, 2010-20151.

US guidelines have recommended testing children emigrating from high tuberculosis-incidence countries with interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) or tuberculin skin tests (TSTs). We describe the Harris County (Texas) Public Health Refugee Health Screening Program's testing results during 2010-2015 for children <18 years of age: 5,990 were evaluated, and 5,870 (98%) were tested. Overall, 364 (6.2%) children had >1 positive test: 143/1,842 (7.8%) were tested with TST alone, 129/3,730 (3.5%) with IGRA alone, and 92/298 (30.9%) with both TST and IGRA.
