APDS Presidential Address.

My goal today is to make an argument that the APDS: is at a crossroads because of unprecedented changes; is in a great position to succeed; seeing the need for change we should nevertheless act consistent with our longstated principles/goals as we negotiate this new path we need to be resolute, bold and brave; the path I hope to convince you of, and which is the subject of this talk, is EQIP (Educational Quality Improvement Project). We humans are in a time of cataclysmic change that rivals fire, the wheel, and the printing press. This change, the digitization of data, allows the collection of

Integrating medical abortion into a residency practice.

While changing residency services and curricula is difficult under the best of circumstances, adding something as controversial as medical abortion can provoke seemingly insurmountable resistance. This paper describes an innovative approach to adding medical abortion services. We first surveyed staff, faculty, residents, and colleagues to examine their reservations. These concerns were addressed in a structured manner, using a range of educational forums. While residents' participation in the service was voluntary, all patients were assured access to medical abortion.

Impact of a simulation-based training on the experience of the beginning of residency.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the impact of an immersive simulation session on the experience of the beginning of residency. METHODS: The interventional group consisted of newly recruited residents in 2019, who participated in the workshop presenting four emergency scenarios frequently encountered during night shifts; the control group comprised residents who had begun their internship in 2018, without having participated in the simulation workshop. The level of psychological stress and self-confidence were self-estimated in the simulation group before and immediately after the workshop.

Turning interns into senior residents: preparing residents for their teaching and leadership roles.

To assist new senior residents with their transition from internship to ward-team leadership, a practical teaching course has been implemented at the University of Washington that integrates the residents' roles as teachers and team supervisors. Residents develop leadership and problem-solving skills by discussing sample cases and videotaped vignettes of typical situations they will encounter. Teaching skills are practiced through small-group role-plays, which illustrate brief teaching opportunities in patient care. Residents learn managerial techniques, including how to clarify goals and expe

Evaluating Telemedical Supervision for Critical Anesthesia Scenarios: Randomized Controlled Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine may improve access to specialized care, but its use for supervision during critical anesthesia situations remains underexplored. A standardized tele-supervision (TSV) solution for operating rooms (ORs) is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate a novel telemedical supervision system for critical anesthetic scenarios in a simulated OR environment and compare it to traditional on-site supervision. Specifically, adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), the number and modality of senior physician contacts, workload, and user perceptions were assessed.

[Promoting Appropriate Use of Medications by "Lectures and Practices Regarding Medicine" for the Regional Community Residents].

We held lectures and practices for the regional community residents with the aim of promoting appropriate use of medications. To evaluate the usefulness of our activity, we conducted medicine-related questionnaire surveys (pre- and post-questionnaires) before and after the lectures and practices, and satisfaction with the activity questionnaire surveys (post-questionnaires) after them. We also evaluated the effect of age difference on the results by dividing the participants into elderly (age ≥65) and non-elderly (age <65), before the analysis. In the both (elderly and non-elderly) groups, the

A national survey comparing practice patterns and residency training satisfaction for categorical dermatology versus combined internal medicine and dermatology trained physicians.

Combined internal medicine and dermatology (med-derm) training programs were created to advance complex medical dermatology and inpatient dermatology care. A prior study demonstrated that compared to categorical dermatology residents, med-derm residents had less program satisfaction, yet indicated a stronger desire to pursue careers in academia. No follow-up data on practice patterns after training has been reported. We aimed to characterize differences in residency program satisfaction and practice patterns between physicians trained in categorical dermatology compared to med-derm residency p

An international comparison of competency-based orthopaedic curricula and minimum operative experience - Review article.

INTRODUCTION: Orthopaedic training has undergone considerable changes in the last few decades. Although structured training pathways exist in most countries, the requirements for completion of training are remarkably different. This review aims to assess key differences among orthopaedic curricula in selected high-income countries with well-established orthopaedic training programmes, focusing on their criteria for assessing technical competence prior to completion of training. METHODS: Current orthopaedic training curricula published by the relevant accrediting bodies in the UK, USA, Canada,

Improving Radiology Trainees' Perception Using Where's Waldo?

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Perception is an essential skill leading to expertise in diagnostic radiology. We determined if practicing "Where's Waldo?" images improves accuracy and speed with which first and second year radiology residents detect abnormalities on chest radiographs (CXRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Residents at three institutions were pretested using 50 CXRs, identifying locations of potential abnormalities. They were then split into trained (examining 7 "Where's Waldo?" images over three weeks) and control groups (no "Where's Waldo?"). They were then re-tested on the 50 CXRs. At o

Correlation of personality assessments with standard selection criteria for neurosurgical residency applicants.

OBJECTIVE Neurosurgery is among the most competitive residencies, as evidenced by the high number of applicants for relatively few positions. Although it is important to recruit candidates who have the intellectual capacity and drive to succeed, traditional objective selection criteria, such as US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) (also known as Step 1) score, number of publications, and class ranking, have not been shown to consistently predict clinical and academic success. Furthermore, these traditional objective parameters have not been associated with specific personality traits. METH
