Baseline overly accommodating interpersonal problems in relation to parsed alliance-outcome associations in cognitive behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.

Given its interpersonal underpinnings, relational factors may be salient in psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Supporting this point, research has indicated a positive total alliance-improvement correlation in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for GAD. However, less research has disaggregated this correlation into within- and between-patient components, or examined theory-informed ways in which patient characteristics influence to these components. Thus, we first investigated parsed alliance-outcome associations in CBT for GAD. Second, consistent with theory that alliance m

Understanding guilt-related interpersonal dysfunction in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder through computational modeling of two social interaction tasks.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a high-prevalence personality disorder characterized by subtle but stable interpersonal dysfunction. There have been only limited studies addressing the behavioral patterns and cognitive features of OCPD in interpersonal contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate how behaviors differ between OCPD individuals and healthy controls (HCs) in the context of guilt-related interpersonal responses. METHOD: A total of 113 participants were recruited, including 46 who were identified as having OCPD and 67 HCs. Guilt-related int

Interpersonal discrimination and depressive symptomatology: examination of several personality-related characteristics as potential confounders in a racial/ethnic heterogeneous adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that reports of interpersonal discrimination result in poor mental health. Because personality characteristics may either confound or mediate the link between these reports and mental health, there is a need to disentangle its role in order to better understand the nature of discrimination-mental health association. We examined whether hostility, anger repression and expression, pessimism, optimism, and self-esteem served as confounders in the association between perceived interpersonal discrimination and CESD-based depressive symptoms in a race/ethnic heterogeneo

Error-Related Brain Activity Moderates the Association Between Interpersonal Stressor Exposure and Both Current and Future Anxiety Symptoms in Adolescent Girls.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common forms of psychopathology and often emerge in childhood and adolescence. The error-related negativity (ERN) is a potential neural vulnerability marker for anxiety. Although some studies have indicated that the ERN interacts with stressful life events to predict anxiety, these studies have only examined natural disasters or adult life stress, and it is thus unclear whether this vulnerability marker moderates the association between early life stressors and the development of psychopathology. To investigate, we assessed the past year stressor exposure

The Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory: psychometric properties and its relation to substance use and interpersonal style in a Dutch sample of non-referred adolescents.

This study presents evidence on the reliability and construct validity of the Dutch version of the Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI), a self-report instrument for psychopathic traits in adolescent boys and girls. In a sample of 776 Dutch non-referred adolescents, the YPI was found to have good internal consistency. Furthermore, exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) indicated a three-factor structure for the YPI, including a Grandiose-manipulative, Callous-unemotional, and Impulsive-irresponsible dimension. Good internal consistency was demonstrated for all dimensions in boys

Go out and meet queer people! Interpersonal LGBT contact and attitudes as determinants of HIV-related stigma among Spanish young adults.

Despite biomedical advances that have transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition, stigma remains a persistent social issue, particularly in everyday interactions. This study examines the factors associated with behavioural expressions of HIV-related stigma among Spanish young adults, a generation that has grown up in a post-crisis, biomedically transformed HIV landscape. Drawing on a quota-based sample of 400 individuals aged 18-24 in Spain, we assess the roles of attitudinal stigma, interpersonal contact with LGBT individuals, educational attainment, political ideology, and HIV-relat

The association between perceived interpersonal social support and physical and mental health: results from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Low social support has been associated with several disorders. We test the relationship between perceived interpersonal social support (ISS) and aspects of mental and physical health. METHODS: We used data from National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions in which 34,653 individuals aged 20-99 years were interviewed twice (2001-02 and 2004-05), with the second interview including the interpersonal support evaluation list. The association of perceived ISS with lifetime DSM-IV psychopathology and physical health from the past 12 months was investigated. We also

Individual and interpersonal factors associated with care-related quality of life in older adults: a comparison of home-based services, nursing homes and sheltered housing.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how long-term care (LTC) services affect care-related quality of life (CRQoL) and potential differences between LTC services is important, especially considering ageing in place policies. However, data on CRQoL is lacking. This study aims to investigate characteristics associated with CRQoL and compare CRQoL across service types. METHODS: From October 2022 to January 2024, older adults in Norway were interviewed using ASCOT (Adult social care outcomes toolkit): 151 in nursing homes, 129 in sheltered housing and 134 in home-based services. Mixed effects models investi

Interrelationships of symptomatic and relational distress: Improvements in interpersonal problems predict subsequent improvement in depressive symptoms during open-ended psychotherapy for adults with depression.

OBJECTIVE: Depressed patients often experience interpersonal distress. Understanding how interpersonal distress and depressive symptoms are associated may have implications for understanding the etiology and maintenance of depression, as well as for treatment. In this naturalistic psychotherapy study, we explored whether change in depressive symptoms predicted subsequent change in interpersonal distress or vice versa. METHOD: Depressive symptoms (depression scale of the Symptom Check List-90-Revised) and interpersonal problems (Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-64) were assessed on nine occ

Childhood maltreatment and family functioning in university students with major depressive disorder: a moderated mediation model of interpersonal functioning and illness-related family burden.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment has been associated with poorer family functioning among college students with major depressive disorder (MDD). Nonetheless, the specific pathway through which childhood maltreatment affects family functioning remains unclear, particularly concerning the potential mediating role of interpersonal functioning and the moderating role of illness-related family burden. Guided by the Double ABC-X framework, which explains family adaptation through stressors, resources, and coping processes, this study examined whether interpersonal functioning mediated the associat

Investigating the Association of Subjective Numeracy, Interpersonal Communication, and Perceived Discrimination With Watching Health-Related Videos on Social Media Platforms: Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, use of social media has grown among US adults. Common social media platforms include Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and TikTok. People proactively use social media for a variety of purposes including searching for health information, peer-to-peer social support, and health-related information sharing. As these platforms often serve as sources of health information, understanding how, if at all, people use them may inform future behavioral interventions delivered via social media. Additionally, a better understanding of social engagement may ha

Development and validation of the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire-Chinese version (STEAQ-C): How interpersonal touch relates to subclinical traits and symptoms.

Social touch has a vital role in human development and psychological well-being. However, there is a lack of measures assessing individual differences in social touch experiences and attitudes, especially under Eastern cultures. This study developed the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire - Chinese version (STEAQ-C) and examined its psychometric properties with healthy young Chinese adults. In Study 1, an item pool was generated and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the factor structure of the STEAQ. Study 2 recruited an independent sample and examined it

Effects of interpersonal violence-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on mother and child diurnal cortisol rhythm and cortisol reactivity to a laboratory stressor involving separation.

Women who have experienced interpersonal violence (IPV) are at a higher risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and impaired social behavior. Previously, we had reported impaired maternal sensitivity and increased difficulty in identifying emotions (i.e. alexithymia) among IPV-PTSD mothers. One of the aims of the present study was to examine maternal IPV-PTSD salivary cortisol levels diurnally and reactive to their child's distress in relation to maternal alexithymia. Given that mother-child interaction during in
