[The chick embryo as a model of fetal surgery: intestinal atresia].

Aiming at depicting the advantages of chick embryo as a model of fetal surgery we report on our experience of 402 operations carried out in an attempt to induce fetal intestinal obstruction. We have used fertile domestic hen (gallus gallus) eggs incubated at 37.5 degrees with 80% humidity and turned every hour. At the 12th day of incubation we coagulated, after exposing the umbilical cord, a small bowel loop in the physiologic umbilical hernia through a 1 cm-wide opening in the shell which was then sealed with plastic sterile adhesive. After sacrifice at the 15th day of the 76 surviving embryo

Visualization of the intestinal tract by amniography in a fetus with esophageal atresia.

In pregnancies complicated by hydramnios, amniography can be used for the detection of fetal gastrointestinal obstruction. A case is presented in which the appearance of contrast material in the fetal gastrointestinal tract was noted in an infant who proved to have esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula. Presumably, the contrast reached the intestinal tract by aspiration and passage through the fistula.

Concurrent biliary atresia and intestinal atresia: a systematic review of clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, management, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: The coexistence of biliary atresia (BA) and intestinal atresia (IA) is exceptionally rare. Delayed recognition of BA in neonates undergoing surgery for IA may adversely affect outcomes. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence regarding the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, management strategies, and outcomes of patients with concurrent BA and IA. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar was conducted for studies published up to December 2025. Relevant studies encompassing case reports, case series, and retrospective rev

Does Preterm Status Hinder the Timely Diagnosis of Intestinal Atresia?

Intestinal atresia is one of the most common causes of bowel obstruction in newborns. Unfortunately, this diagnosis is often missed or delayed in extremely preterm infants because of complications of prematurity including feeding intolerance and necrotizing enterocolitis. Here we report 2 cases of jejunoileal atresia in extremely preterm infants who were diagnosed beyond 30 days of age. Case 1 had jejunoileal atresia type IIIa, whereas case 2 had type IV jejunoileal atresia complicated by short bowel syndrome. Ideally, intestinal atresia should be diagnosed as early as possible in a patient's

Intestinal atresia presenting as bilateral scrotal pneumatocele: A case report.

The authors report on a newborn baby with congenital hydrocele in whom pneumoscrotum developed. Air and meconium were found over the hernia sac, owing to ileal atresia with perforation. Gas in the scrotum usually is inside herniated bowel, but it can be the first sign of pneumoperitoneum.

Association between multiple intestinal atresia and omphalocele: a case report.

Multiple intestinal atresia is a rare disorder with vascular or hereditary etiology. So far, the occurrence of this malformation along with omphalocele has not been reported. We describe a boy born from a nonconsanguineous gypsy couple with intrauterine growth retardation, omphalocele, and multiple intestinal atresia from the pylorus to the rectum. The microscopic examination of the intestine shows multiple small lumina with a sieve-like appearance. This is characteristic of the hereditary atresias and suggests development of a defect in (re)canalization during embryogenesis. The association w

Implications of antenatal diagnosis of small-intestinal atresia in the 1990s.

To assess the prevalence of antenatal diagnosis of small-intestinal atresias (SIA) in the modern era and determine its effect on management and outcome, the records of neonates admitted to a single institution in 1991-1996 with a diagnosis of SIA were reviewed. Duodenal atresia, atresias complicating meconium ileus, and those associated with gastroschisis were excluded. Of 14 neonates with SIA, 10 had jejunal atresia (JA) (Grosfeld type I, n = 1; type II, n = 2; type IIIa, n = 3; type IIIb [apple peel], n = 3; type IV, n = 1) and 4 had ileal atresia (IA) (type II, n = 1; type IIIa, n = 3). [Fetal nutrition in intestinal atresia. Studies on the chick embryo].

This paper examines the effects of experimental prenatal intestinal obstruction on the growth and blood composition of chick embryos. Intestinal atresia (IA) was produced by bipolar bowel electrocoagulation in fertile eggs on the 14th day of incubation. The chicks sacrificed on the 19th day were measured, weighed and blood-sampled. Twenty-three control, 10 sham-operated and 11 IA chicks were studied. Animals with IA were severely undernourished by weight (43.4 +/- 4.7 vs 70.3 +/- 7.6% of egg weight, p < 0.001) and length (15.3 +/- 1.1 vs 18.1 +/- 9 mm. tibial length, p < 0.001) in comparison w

Intestinal Atresia in PPP1R12A -Related Urogenital and Brain Malformation Syndrome.

PPP1R12A-related urogenital and brain malformation syndrome (UBMS) is a newly described disorder characterized by congenital anomalies primarily involving the urogenital system and the brain. We describe a preterm female neonate with multiple congenital anomalies, including type IIIb jejunal atresia, incomplete intestinal rotation, imperforate anus without rectal fistula, and vaginal atresia. Brain imaging revealed bilateral periventricular white matter echogenicity, and echocardiography identified a muscular ventricular septal defect. Genetic testing revealed a stop-loss PPP1R12A variant c.30

Incidence of late severe intestinal complications after bowel atresia/stenosis.

BACKGROUND: To determine the incidence and risk factors for late severe intestinal complications after surgical repair for intra-abdominal congenital intestinal atresia/stenosis. METHODS: We included 51 patients who underwent surgical repair for congenital intestinal atresia/stenosis. Late severe intestinal complications included adhesive ileus, incisional hernia, or volvulus. Whether surgical intervention was urgent or not was recorded. The location of the atresia/stenosis was classified into two groups: atresia/stenosis located at the oral or anal side from the Treitz ligament. The type of

Preduodenal Portal Vein Associated With Intestinal Malrotation and Jejunal Atresia.

Preduodenal portal vein (PDPV) is a rare congenital anomaly commonly associated with other gastrointestinal abnormalities. We report the case of a female neonate with a PDPV, intestinal malrotation and jejunal atresia. This is the second account of this association reported in the literature. The previously reported case underwent a gastroduodenostomy to correct the presumed duodenal obstruction caused by the PDPV. In our case, the PDPV was not corrected and the child remains well and asymptomatic. We propose that in this rare association, the PDPV is not a cause of obstruction and does not ne

Omphalomesenteric Duct Remnant: A Rare and Unusual Cause of Intestinal Atresia.

Intestinal atresia is generally considered to result from mesenteric vascular disruptions during fetal life. This report describes an unusual case of ileal atresia, resulting from an omphalic ring closure anomaly and an omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) remnant. A 2-day-old male neonate presented with bilious vomiting and abdominal distension. At laparotomy, the distal portion of the atretic ileum was entrapped within the umbilical ring, causing volvulus of the proximal dilated atretic bowel around the fixed distal bowel at the omphalic ring. This case report supports OMD remnants as a rare, potent
