The relation of environmental contaminants exposure to behavioral indicators in Inuit preschoolers in Arctic Quebec.

Although lead (Pb) exposure has been identified as an important risk factor in child behavioral development, less is known regarding the relation between child behavior and exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury (Hg). Inuit children are particularly exposed to these chemicals and the aim of this study was to investigate the association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to Pb, PCBs, Hg and several aspects of behavioral function in Inuit preschoolers. The sample consisted of one hundred and ten 5-year-old Inuit children from Arctic Quebec. An umbilical cord blood sample w

Prevalence and determinants of hypertension in the adult Inuit population of Nunavik (northern Quebec, Canada).

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of arterial hypertension among Inuit adults living in Nunavik (northern Quebec, Canada) in 2017 and identify its sociodemographic and lifestyle determinants. METHODS: We used data obtained from 1177 Inuit adults aged ≥ 18 years who participated in the cross-sectional Qanuilirpitaa? Nunavik Inuit Health Survey during late summer-early fall of 2017. Resting blood pressure (BP) and anthropometric characteristics were measured during a clinical session, while sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle habits were documented using validated questionnaires.

Developing the ACEIG-scale: An adverse childhood experience scale for Inuit youth in Greenland.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been identified as a major public health challenge in Greenland. No previous studies have created a multi-item ACE- scale among an Arctic Indigenous population. OBJECTIVE: To develop a multi-item ACE-scale among Inuit youth in Greenland (the ACEIG scale). METHODS: The ACEIG scale was created with data from the 'Wellbeing among Inuit youth in Greenland'-survey. Scale items were based on a recognised ACE-scale and further adapted to the context of Inuit youth in Greenland by adding items relevant for the population. The scale was validated

Body burden of metals and persistent organic pollutants among Inuit in the Canadian Arctic.

Inuit living in the Arctic are exposed to elevated levels of environmental contaminants primarily due to long-range atmospheric transport. Blood sampling and contaminant biomonitoring was conducted as part of the International Polar Year Inuit Health Survey in 2007-2008. The body burden of metals (e.g. Cd, Pb) and persistent organic pollutants (e.g. PCBs, DDT & DDE, toxaphene, chlordane, PBDEs) were measured for Inuit participants (n=2172) from 36 communities in Nunavut, Nunatsiavut, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, in Canada. The geometric mean of blood concentrations for Cd, Pb, PCBs, D

Rates of stillbirth by gestational age and cause in Inuit and First Nations populations in Quebec.

BACKGROUND: Inuit and First Nations populations have higher rates of stillbirth than non-Aboriginal populations in Canada do, but little is known about the timing and cause of stillbirth in Aboriginal populations. We compared gestational age- and cause-specific stillbirth rates in Inuit and First Nations populations with the rates in the non-Aboriginal population in Quebec. METHODS: Data included singleton stillbirths and live births at 24 or more gestational weeks among Quebec residents from 1981 to 2009. We calculated odds ratios (ORs), rate differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) fo

Prevalence and the duration of linear enamel hypoplasia: a comparative study of Neandertals and Inuit foragers.

As a dental indicator of generalized physiological stress, enamel hypoplasia has been the subject of several Neandertal studies. While previous studies generally have found high frequencies of enamel hypoplasia in Neandertals, the significance of this finding varies with frequencies of enamel hypoplasia in comparative samples. The present investigation was undertaken to ascertain if the enamel hypoplasia evidence in Neandertals suggests a high level of physiological stress relative to a modern human foraging group, represented here by an archaeological sample of Inuit from Point Hope, Alaska.

Sagittal clefting of the body and other vertebral developmental errors in Canadian Inuit skeletons.

The objective of this study was to determine the expression, distribution in the column, and overall frequency of sagittal clefting of the vertebral body in the skeletons of two Canadian Inuit groups. One group, referred to as Thule-Historic, lived along the coast northwest of Hudson Bay, while the other, known as the Sadlermiut, were limited to Southampton Island and Coats Island north of Hudson Bay. The Thule-Historic people are thought to be the ancestors of the present-day Inuit of this region, whereas the much smaller, relatively isolated Sadlermiut became extinct during the winter of 190

Familial aggregation of intracranial aneurysms in an Inuit patient population in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland).

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and intracranial aneurysm (IA) has been reported to be higher in Greenlandic Inuits than in Caucasian Danes, but the rate of familial aggregation in Inuits is unknown. METHODS: This study retrospectively compared the rate of familial aggregation of SAH and IA (at least one first- or second-degree relative with presumed SAH and/or IA) in 120 Inuit patients from Greenland admitted to the Copenhagen University Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 1978 to 1998 with a diagnosis of ruptured IA with that in 1,037 Caucasian Danes admitted fro

Effect of a local cold stress on peripheral temperatures of Inuit, Oriental, and Caucasian subjects.

Male subjects comprised of six Inuit from Igloolik, N.W.T., and five Orientals and six Caucasians from Toronto, Ont., volunteered for tests to determine the effect of localized cold stress on peripheral temperatures. In each subject, skin temperatures of the right index finger, the arm, and the cheek, as well as blood pressure and heart rate, were measured before, during, and after foot immersion in water of 10 degrees C temperature for 10 min. There was an immediate decrease in finger temperature on foot immersion in all three subject groups; however, the Inuit finger temperatures recovered v

Oral aspiration, type 1 laryngeal cleft, and respiratory tract infections in canadian inuit children.

Canadian Inuit infants suffer the highest rate of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI's) in the world. The causes of this are incompletely understood. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether there exists an association between respiratory morbidity and oral aspiration in Inuit children. A retrospective chart review was conducted including children from Nunavut who underwent Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study between the years of 2001 to 2015. The primary outcome was hospitalization for LRTI. We hypothesized that infants found to have aspiration would experience a hig

HIV/AIDS Risk and Prevention Issues Among Inuit Living in Nunavut Territory of Canada.

AIM: HIV infections occur across the Arctic but their incidence among aboriginal populations varies vastly. At the time this research was initiated there were no data on their occurrence, risk of HIV/AIDS or preventive strategies among Inuit living in the Nunavut territory of Canada. This review is the first to assess the risk of HIV infection among Inuit and evaluate current prevention strategies among Canadian-Inuit populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The contents of this article are based on the author's own research, undertaken during 3 visits to the Canadian Arctic and the published lite

Suicide Among Inuit: Results From a Large, Epidemiologically Representative Follow-Back Study in Nunavut.

OBJECTIVE: The Inuit population in Canada's North has suffered from high rates of death by suicide. We report on the first large-scale, controlled, epidemiologically representative study of deaths by suicide in an Indigenous population, which investigates risk factors for suicide among all Inuit across Nunavut who died by suicide during a 4-year period. METHODS: We identified all suicides by Inuit (n = 120) that occurred between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2006, in Nunavut. For each subject, we selected a community-matched control subject. We used proxy-based procedures and conducted st

Does establishing local treatment institutions lead to different populations seeking treatment among Greenlandic Inuit?

Introduction: In 2016, a new addiction treatment service was established in Greenland to tackle the addiction problems with alcohol, cannabis and gambling among the population. The new service has established a treatment center in each of the five municipalities and works in partnership with a central private provider of treatment for those who reside in areas without a local treatment center. Methods: The national addiction database provided us with data from the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, Alcohol Severity Index and questions on cannabis use and gambling behavior received at ref

Characterizing rabies epidemiology in remote Inuit communities in Québec, Canada: a "One Health" approach.

Rabies is endemic throughout arctic areas including the region of Nunavik, situated north of the 55th parallel of Québec, Canada, and raises public health concerns. The aim of this paper is to provide a descriptive overview of the temporal and regional distributions of three important components of arctic rabies in Nunavik from 1999 to 2012, following a "One Health" approach: animal rabies tests and confirmed cases, dog vaccination, and human consultations for potential rabies exposures. Forty-four cases of rabies, involving mainly arctic and red foxes, were confirmed in animals during this pe

Sun Exposure and the "Reverse Goggles Tan" as a Badge of Honor in Canadian Inuit Northern Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Sun protection behaviors are shaped by beliefs deeply rooted in culture and traditions. Understanding how beliefs shape sun protection behaviors is crucial for delivering culturally sensitive, congruent care. This is even more important in Indigenous communities where successful health promotion must align with traditional practices and local values. We explored how beliefs, shaped by cultural values, influence sun protection behaviors in Inuit residents of Nunavik. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive study using focus groups to collect information was conducted from June to August

Postoperative outcomes for Nunavut Inuit at a Canadian quaternary care centre: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Structural aspects of health care systems, such as limited access to specialized surgical and perioperative care, can negatively affect the outcomes and resource use of patients undergoing elective and emergency surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to compare postoperative outcomes of Nunavut Inuit and non-Inuit patients at a Canadian quaternary care centre. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving adult (age ≥ 18 yr) patients undergoing inpatient surgery from 2011 to 2018 at The Ottawa Hospital, the quaternary referral hospital for the Qikiqtaaluk Re

Sources of food affect dietary adequacy of Inuit women of childbearing age in Arctic Canada.

Dietary transition in the Arctic is associated with decreased quality of diet, which is of particular concern for women of childbearing age due to the potential impact of maternal nutrition status on the next generation. The study assessed dietary intake and adequacy among Inuit women of childbearing age living in three communities in Nunavut, Canada. A culturally-appropriate quantitative food-frequency questionnaire was administered to 106 Inuit women aged 19-44 years. Sources of key foods, energy and nutrient intakes were determined; dietary adequacy was determined by comparing nutrient inta

Determinants of plasma concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonate and brominated organic compounds in Nunavik Inuit adults (Canada).

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and brominated organic compounds (BOCs) have been found in biota and humans worldwide with levels of BOCs being the highest in North America. PFOS and BOC exposure of remote populations that consume species of a marine food web for their subsistence has seldom been investigated. In 2004, we determined the concentrations of these contaminants in 883 Nunavik Inuit adults from the Canadian Arctic and investigated the demographic and dietary factors associated with them. Demographic and dietary information were collected by questionnaires. Multiple linear regression

First reports of primary ciliary dyskinesia caused by a shared DNAH11 allele in Canadian Inuit.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is typically an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent infections of the lower respiratory tract, frequent and severe otitis media, chronic rhinosinusitis, neonatal respiratory distress, and organ laterality defects. While severe lower respiratory tract infections and bronchiectasis are common in Inuit, PCD has not been recognized in this population. METHODS: We report a case series of seven Inuit patients with PCD identified by genetic testing in three Canadian PCD centers. RESULTS: Patients ranged from 4 to 59 years of age (at ti
