The Potential of Sweetpotato as a Functional Food in Sub-Saharan Africa and Its Implications for Health: A Review.

Increasing urbanization in developing countries has resulted in busier lifestyles, accompanied by consumption of fast foods. The consequence is an increased prevalence in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Food-based approaches would be cheaper and more sustainable in reducing these NCDs compared to drugs, which may have side effects. Studies have suggested that consuming functional foods could potentially lower NCD risks. Sweetpotato is regarded as a functional food because it contains bioactive compounds. Recently, sweetpotato has gained attention in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), but research has

Marketing Healthy Food in an African City: Consumer Motivations for Adopting Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato in Maputo, Mozambique.

Since the late 1990s, the International Potato Center has promoted orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) cultivars in Mozambique as a healthy food, emphasizing its capacity to reduce the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among mothers and young children. This article seeks to reveal why consumers in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, adopt or reject OFSP looking at the role of food systems and consumer characteristics in access and acceptance of healthy food and at the positioning of OFSP on the market in terms of lifestyle and need satisfaction. The results of 255 street interviews confirm

Catalase activity is modulated by calcium and calmodulin in detached mature leaves of sweet potato.

Catalase (CAT) functions as one of the key enzymes in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species and affects the H2O2 homeostasis in plants. In sweet potato, a major catalase isoform was detected, and total catalase activity showed the highest level in mature leaves (L3) compared to immature (L1) and completely yellow, senescent leaves (L5). The major catalase isoform as well as total enzymatic activity were strongly suppressed by ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA). This inhibition could be specifically and significantly mitigated in mature L3 leaves by exo

Comprehensive review of sweetpotato flavor compounds: Opportunities for developing consumer-preferred varieties.

Flavor contributes significantly to consumer preferences of cooked sweetpotato. Sugars largely drive the sweet taste, while the volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly classified as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and terpenes, provide characteristic aromas and influence the overall perception of flavor. In this paper, we review sweetpotato VOCs identified in the literature from 1980 to 2024 and discuss the efforts to understand how these compounds influence sensory perception and consumer preferences. Over 400 VOCs have been identified in cooked sweetpotato with 76 known to be aroma-active. M

Enhancing Reniform Nematode Management in Sweetpotato by Complementing Host-Plant Resistance with Nonfumigant Nematicides.

The reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira) adversely impacts the quality and quantity of sweetpotato storage roots. Management of R. reniformis in sweetpotato remains a challenge because host plant resistance is not available, fumigants are detrimental to the environment and health, and crop rotation is not effective. We screened a core set of 24 sweetpotato plant introductions (PIs) against R. reniformis. Four PIs were resistant, and 10 were moderately resistant to R. reniformis, suggesting these PIs can serve as sources of resistance for sweetpotato resistance bree

Purple Sweet Potato Powder Containing Anthocyanin Mitigates High-Fat-Diet-Induced Dry Eye Disease.

Purple sweet potato (PSP) powder with anthocyanins possesses the ability to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Studies have presumed a positive correlation between body fat and dry eye disease (DED) in adults. The regulation of oxidative stress and inflammation has been proposed as the mechanism underlying DED. This study developed an animal model of high fat diet (HFD)-induced DED. We added 5% PSP powder to the HFD to evaluate the effects and underlying mechanisms in mitigating HFD-induced DED. A statin drug, atorvastatin, was also added to the diet separately to assess its effect. The

Non-zero-crossing current-voltage hysteresis behavior induced by capacitive effects in bio-memristor.

Capacitive devices have drawn a beautiful application scene in electronic device systems ranging from touch sensors, energy storages and multifunction transistors, but serving as memristive term is still blank. Sweet potato peel (SPP) as function layer was employed to develop the memristive device with Ag/SPP/F-doped SnO2 (FTO) structure. A current-voltage (I-V) hysteresis, which is characterized by a typical capacitive behavior, is impressively observed in the developed device. Nonvolatile data storage is feasible using the non-zero-crossing I-V hysteresis because the resistance states can be

Dissipation, processing factors, and dietary exposure of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in sweet potato stems.

Residues of two applied parent insecticides, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, in sweet potato stems (Ipomoea batatas L.) were investigated during field dissipation, household processing, and dietary exposure assessment. Residues were determined using a QuEChERS-LC-MS/MS method validated in raw and processed matrices. The LOQ was 0.01 mg/kg, matrix-matched calibration showed R2 > 0.999, and recoveries ranged from 77.8 to 104.1%. Field dissipation followed first-order kinetics, with DT50 values of 2.5 days for imidacloprid and 1.8 days for thiamethoxam. Boiling gave the lowest processing factors (

Antioxidative activity of anthocyanins from purple sweet potato, Ipomoera batatas cultivar Ayamurasaki.

We evaluated the antioxidative activity of anthocyanins from an extract of the tuber of purple sweet potato (PSP) (Ipomoea batatas cultivar Ayamurasaki). Anthocyanins from PSP showed stronger 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity than anthocyanins from red cabbage, grape skin, elderberry, or purple corn, and eight major components of the anthocyanins from PSP showed higher levels of activity than ascorbic acid. In PSP anthocyanin-injected rats and PSP beverage-administered volunteers, DPPH radical-scavenging activity in the urine increased. The elevation of plasma tr

Evaluation of an ultra-portable pocket-sized device for running Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays for rapid detection of sweetpotato viruses.

The sweetpotato ( Ipomoea batatas) is an important food crop in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, but its yield and quality are heavily affected by viral diseases. Timely and precise detection of virus infections is essential for effective monitoring of seed health and disease management. We evaluated the feasibility of using a compact, ultra-portable LAMP-based diagnostic device-initially designed for human health applications-for detecting key sweetpotato viruses (SPCSV, SPFMV, and SPLCV). Field and greenhouse samples were tested, showing 100% agreement in virus detection wi

In vitro availability of some essential minerals in commonly eaten processed and unprocessed Caribbean tuber crops.

The levels of three essential minerals Ca, Fe and Mg and the extent of their availability were assessed in four commonly eaten Caribbean tuber crops [dasheen (Xanthosoma spp.), Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and yellow yam (Dioscorea cayenensis)] in their processed and unprocessed states. Calcium was highest in cooked dasheen (5150+/-50 mg/kg) while Magnesium was highest in uncooked Irish potato (3600+/-200 mg/kg). There was no significant loss of calcium from the food samples upon cooking. All the uncooked food samples displayed higher levels minerals assesse

Advances in semiochemicals of the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, and its application in pest management.

The sweet potato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius, is one of the most destructive pests of sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas L., across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The concealed feeding habits of larvae and the nocturnal activity of adults render conventional chemical-based control largely ineffective. Semiochemical-based management, especially the use of female-produced sex pheromone, has emerged as a promising strategy for integrated pest management (IPM) for this pest insect. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the chemical ecology of C. formicarius, including the id

Transcriptome-Based Comparative Expression Profiling of Sweet Potato during a Compatible Response with Root-Knot Nematode Meloidogyne incognita Infection.

M. incognita, a root-knot nematode (RKN), infects the roots of several important food crops, including sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.), and severely reduces yields. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying infection remain unclear. Previously, we investigated differential responses to RKN invasion in susceptible and resistant sweet potato cultivars through RNA-seq-based transcriptome analysis. In this study, gene expression similarities and differences were examined in RKN-susceptible sweet potato cultivars during the compatible response to RKN infection. Three susceptible cultivars in

Stability of β-carotene during baking of orange-fleshed sweet potato-wheat composite bread and estimated contribution to vitamin A requirements.

Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is known to be a rich source of β-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A and a potential tool for fighting vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in developing countries. OFSP flour was incorporated into wheat flour at 10, 20 and 30% (w/w) substitution levels. The stability of β-carotene during baking and the contribution of OFSP-wheat composite breads to vitamin A requirements were evaluated. The retention of all-trans-β-carotene in breads containing 10, 20 and 30% OFSP flour was 62.7, 71.4 and 83% respectively, after baking. Breads containing 20% and 30% OFSP flour could b

Potentially Life-threatening Arrhythmia Triggered by an Excessive Consumption of Dried Sweet Potato "Hoshi-Imo".

We herein report two cases of potentially life-threatening arrhythmia due to hyperkalemia triggered by the excessive consumption of "Hoshi-Imo" (dried sweet potato). Both patients with chronic renal disease on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors presented at the emergency room with non-specific symptoms. Electrocardiograms revealed potentially life-threatening arrhythmia due to hyperkalemia in both cases: sinus arrest with a ventricular escape rhythm, tall and peaked T waves; and a widened QRS complex in a nearly sine-wave configuration without discernible P wave. Both patients ful

Sweet potato beta-carotene bioefficacy is enhanced by dietary fat and not reduced by soluble fiber intake in Mongolian gerbils.

Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is an important source of beta-carotene (betaC). Provitamin A bioefficacy from plant foods is influenced by dietary fat and fiber. We fed 3% OFSP powder diets with varying amounts of fat and soluble fiber to vitamin A (VA)-depleted Mongolian gerbils (n = 85) for 3 wk (8 groups, n = 10/group; control, n = 9) following a baseline kill (n = 6). OFSP diets differing in fat (3, 6, and 12%) contained 0.24% soluble fiber. Two additional 3% OFSP diets contained 6% fat and 3 or 9% white-fleshed sweet potato (WFSP) powder with soluble fiber contents of 0.42 and 0.80%,
