BACKGROUND: Patients with sickle cell trait and concomitant systemic disease are known to be at risk for proliferative retinopathy. However, there are reports of retinopathy in patients with sickle cell trait without systemic disease. There are no population-based studies addressing the risk of sickle cell retinopathy in this group. We performed a study to clarify the relation between sickle cell trait and retinopathy in healthy subjects.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 100 children with sickle cell disease who attended the Sickle Cell Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children, Tor

Insular organisms often evolve predictable phenotypes, like flightlessness, extreme body sizes, or increased melanin deposition. The evolutionary forces and molecular targets mediating these patterns remain mostly unknown. Here we study the Chestnut-bellied Monarch (Monarcha castaneiventris) from the Solomon Islands, a complex of closely related subspecies in the early stages of speciation. On the large island of Makira M. c. megarhynchus has a chestnut belly, whereas on the small satellite islands of Ugi, and Santa Ana and Santa Catalina (SA/SC) M. c. ugiensis is entirely iridescent blue-blac

Intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections are a cornerstone treatment for various retinal conditions, including diabetic macular edema and age-related macular degeneration. While generally safe, these injections can introduce unintended substances, such as silicone oil droplets, into the vitreous cavity due to the silicone-based lubricant used in syringe manufacturing. Although frequently asymptomatic, silicone oil droplets can occasionally cause significant visual disturbances and discomfort. We report a rare case of symptoms caused by silicone oil droplets follow

Anthropogenic habitat alterations have the potential to affect both, ecological dynamics of communities and populations, as well as evolutionary processes within populations. Invasive species may benefit from anthropogenic disturbance, such as water pollution, to which they sometimes seem more resistant than native ones. They also allow investigating evolutionary divergence among populations occurring along pollution gradients. We assessed fish communities at 55 sampling sites in the degraded and heavily overstocked Mutara Rangelands of north-eastern Rwanda (upper Nile drainage), which receive

Sickle cell disease has varied manifestations in all systems of the body, ocular manifestations can be severe and sudden blindness may result amidst other complications. The study aims at determining the ocular findings in patients with sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) and sickle cell haemoglobin C disease (HbSC). 99 subjects were recruited into the study carried out at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital over a 2 year period. A structured interview questionnaire was administered and physical examination was carried out at the Medical Out Patients' Sickle Cell Clinics. Subsequently in the (Guinne

BACKGROUND: Two Southeast Asian spider collections: that of Frances and John Murphy, now in the Manchester University Museum and the Deeleman collection, now at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden constituted the basis of this analysis of Chrysilla Thorell, 1887 and related genera. The latter collection also includes many thousands of spiders obtained by canopy fogging for an ecological project in Borneo by A. Floren.
NEW INFORMATION: Some incongruences within the genera of the tribe Chrysillini are disentangled. The transfer of C.jesudasi Caleb & Mathai, 2014 from Chrysilla as type s

The DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (DdRP or RNAP) is an essential enzyme of transcription of replicating systems of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms as well as cytoplasmic DNA viruses. DdRPs are complex multisubunit enzymes consisting of 8-14 subunits, including two large subunits and several smaller polypeptides (small subunits). An extensive search between the amino acid sequences of the known largest subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RPO1) of different organisms indicates that all these polypeptides possess a universal heptapeptide NADFDGD in domain D. All RPO1 harbor a second wel

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell dyscrasias (PCD) are characterized by an abnormal production of intact monoclonal immunoglobulins or parts such as heavy or light chains. In most cases, the monoclonal protein (also termed paraprotein) is produced by a clonal plasma cell population. The production of monoclonal proteins can result in deposits of various types and localization depending on the type, amount, and electrochemical properties of the paraprotein. One histopathologic presentation, albeit rare, are crystalline deposits. They can form in various organs and hence cause a wide spectrum of symptoms.

Cystinosis, a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by intracellular cystine accumulation, occurs in an estimated 1/100,000-200,000 live births. Ocular non-nephropathic cystinosis is typically diagnosed during adulthood, when patients present with corneal crystal deposition and no systemic involvement. Due to the rarity of the condition, diagnosis is often delayed and can have a significant impact on the overall prognosis of the disease. Early diagnosis is therefore imperative to ensure successful treatment and improve quality of life, as most of its clinical manifestations can be prevented

Marine resources have tremendous potential for developing high-value biomaterials. The last decade has seen an increasing number of biomaterials that originate from marine organisms. This field is rapidly evolving. Marine biomaterials experience several periods of discovery and development ranging from coralline bone graft to polysaccharide-based biomaterials. The latter are represented by chitin and chitosan, marine-derived collagen, and composites of different organisms of marine origin. The diversity of marine natural products, their properties and applications are discussed thoroughly in t

Nanomaterials are redefining the landscape of gene and genome editing, yet their translation to clinical reality remains constrained by multiple unresolved challenges. While they provide structural and functional advantages for delivering nucleic acids and CRISPR/Cas systems across biological barriers, their behavior within living systems is often unpredictable, leading to issues such as off-target editing, immune activation, and inconsistent biodistribution. The design of nanocarriers, whether lipid-based, polymeric, inorganic, must therefore balance efficiency with safety, integrating physic
