There are unusually thick serpentine vessels in the iris along which there are no leaks in the fluorescein angiogram. Five and a half to seven years ago this was considered to be a sign of normal iris vessels in our department. It was assumed that this was only an abnormality. In four instances we have been able to find this irregularity, without any changes, in the vessels in the iris where it was a question of shunt vessels. In three of these four instances other diseases of the eyes were also present.

BACKGROUND: Multiple pigmented epithelial cysts at the edge of pupils, that is, iris flocculi, in both eyes, are rare ocular diseases. It has been demonstrated that this disease can be attributed to mutations in the smooth muscle α-actin 2 (ACTA2) gene, which mainly affects the function of smooth muscle cells (SMCs). SMCs are components of the iris, aorta, and several other systemic organs. In addition, iris flocculi are strongly correlated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD), which is caused by the mutation of amino acid 149 in the ACTA2 gene.

PURPOSE: Ciliary body (CB) and iris thicknesses may change with certain eye diseases as well as between different populations. Here, we report Ultrasound Biomicroscopy Measurements (UBM) of the normal thickness for the CB and the iris from a homogenous population in the Middle East.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sonomed 35-MHz (SONOMED, INC. New York, USA) images were obtained at 4 radial meridians, and the thickness was measured at 3 locations along the radial length of the iris and at the thickest part of the CB. Parameters included mean thickness, median thickness, range, and standard deviation.
