Ferrokinetics and life-span of erythrocytes were investigated with 59Fe and 51Cr respectively, in 15 children with thalassemia major, aged between 18 months and 15 years (five of which had been splenectomized), and in 8 children with hereditary spherocytosis aged between 12 and 14 years. In all cases studied with 59Fe there was low tracer incorporation in erythrocytes, but no correlation of this parameter to the amount of Hb F. Iron absorption and daily loss of Fe were measured in riboflavin-deficient (B2-) Norwegian hooded rats and controls (B2+). Animals were fed on a test meal extrinsically labelled with 59Fe and whole-body radioactivity measured for 15 d. The coupling of hematologic data with radionuclide studies of the spleen has provided information as to the functioning of the organ in a variety of disease states. The major radionuclide studies have been presented in terms of the type of information derivable and the various conditions that can result in fairly similar image presentations. By utilizing the imaging results in conjunction with other available data, a more coherent view emerges of the role of the spleen.

Breast cancer patients who present with nodal metastasis receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) with increasing frequency and can have complete pathologic response after treatment. Intestinal 59Fe absorption was measured in 16 patients with beta-thalassaemia/haemoglobin E disease and in 5 normal controls, using a total-body counting technique. The genesis of hemopoietic bone marrow was studied in matrix-induced transformation plaques and ossicles in subcutaneous spaces of thorax and abdomen of rat. With the advent of blood vessels in the plaque on day 9, there began a rapid and radical conglomerate shift, cartilaginous to osseous, which was nearly total in 72 hr.
