Phylogenomics supports monophyly of marsupial crustaceans: a journey to direct development.

Peracarida (marsupial crustaceans) represent one of the most diverse and ecologically important crustacean groups, yet their evolutionary relationships have long been debated. Here, we present the most comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of Peracarida to date, incorporating the relict taxa Thermosbaenacea, Mictacea, Ingolfiellida, and Spelaeogriphacea in a phylogenomic framework. Our results robustly confirm peracarid monophyly and recover a well-supported clade uniting Mancoida (Isopoda, Tanaidaca, Cumacea, Spelaeogriphacea) and Mictacea. We propose for Mictacea to be classified as part of th

Persistence of brodifacoum in cockroach and woodlice: implications for secondary poisoning during rodent eradications.

When planning rodent eradications, that normally involve the use of the anticoagulant poison brodifacoum, it is imperative to minimise impacts on other "non-target" species that dwell alongside the targeted rodents and may indeed be the intended beneficiaries of the eradication. Such impacts can arise either from primary poisoning when the non-target species ingest bait pellets containing toxicant or by secondary poisoning when the non-target species eats prey that has itself eaten brodifacoum. Cockroaches and woodlice, likely to scavenge bait pellets, are widely distributed on tropical and su

Digest: Chromosomal architecture of behavioral isolation in marine isopods.

How do reproductive barriers persist when diverging species come back into contact? Ribardière et al. (2026) investigated this question in 2 marine isopods, Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta, whose males court females using divergent specialized setae. By combining population genomics and controlled crosses, the authors show that genomic regions resisting interspecific gene flow are concentrated on sex chromosomes and rearranged chromosomes-regions of low recombination that harbor the genetic bases of divergent male courtship traits.

Parasitic isopods in fish aquaculture: A review of current knowledge and future perspectives.

Aquaculture has become a dominant contributor to global seafood production, providing essential protein and supporting livelihoods while alleviating pressure on wild fish stocks. However, cultured fish face numerous health challenges, including infestations by parasitic isopods, notably cymothoid and gnathiid species, which cause significant economic losses through reduced growth, compromised health, and mortality. Infestations are usually influenced by host factors, environmental conditions, parasite traits, and aquaculture management practices, including cage design, stocking density, water

Functional and sex-specific dynamics of ectoparasite size evolution in marine isopod-fish interactions: Harrison's rule and increasing variance.

Harrison's rule, a pattern predicting that the body size of parasites correlates positively with the size of their hosts, is well-supported. However, its interaction with highly distinct "guilds" of closely related parasites warrants further exploration. The increasing variance hypothesis predicts that the variance in parasite size should also increase with the size of their hosts. Though untested, in parasite taxa with differential sex-dependent pressures on body size, this relationship should also be divergent across sexes due to differential size-fecundity relationships. We compiled global

Gnathia aureamaculosa, a likely definitive host of Haemogregarina balistapi and potential vector for Haemogregarina bigemina between fishes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Investigations to determine whether juvenile gnathiid isopods are vectors of haemogregarines between coral reef fishes were undertaken at Lizard Island, Australia. Haemogregarina balistapi parasitaemias in triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus, decreased under gnathiid-free, laboratory conditions, compared with those in tagged R. aculeatus returned to the reef. Gnathia aureamaculosa juveniles were common ectoparasites of reef R. aculeatus and laboratory reared specimens of this gnathiid were fed on R. aculeatus infected with H. balistapi. Subsequent squashes of this gnathiid contained haemogrega

Weak effects of local prey density and spatial overlap on predation intensity in a temperate marine ecosystem.

Quantifying the impact of lower trophic level species abundance on higher trophic level predators (and vice versa) is critical for understanding marine ecosystem dynamics and for implementing ecosystem-based management. Trophic ecosystem models generally predict a tight coupling between prey and fish predators, such that higher abundance of lower trophic species increases the abundance of higher trophic level predators. This assumes that predator feeding rates are limited by prey availability to some degree. Despite being a key component of predator-prey interactions and multispecies fisheries

New insights into the life cycle of Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae).

The platynosomiasis, a worldwide parasitic disease with importance for domestic cat, has an etiological agent species of trematodes of the genus Platynosomum, whose complete life cycles are not yet known. The real role of lizards in the transmission of this dicrocoeliid parasite (as obligatory intermediate or paratenic host) still needs to be defined. In the present study, oval-shaped encysted metacercariae obtained from terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea sp. and Nagurus nanus) and elongated excysted metacercariae found in biliary ducts and gallbladder of lizards (Hemidactylus mabouia) in Brazil w

Environmental risk of diclofenac in European groundwaters and implications for environmental quality standards.

Groundwater harbours unique species adapted to perpetual darkness. Groundwater fauna plays a crucial role in global ecosystem services, but contamination poses a threat to this keystone ecosystem. Diclofenac is a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of particular concern, due to its presence in both surface and groundwater. We assess the environmental risk of diclofenac in European groundwaters using different scenarios, analyzing Measured Environmental Concentrations (MECs) of diclofenac and estimating the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNECs) through two approaches: considering th

The ultrastructure of the hepatopancreatic caeca of Gammarus minus (crustacea, amphipoda).

The hepatopancreatic caeca of the freshwater amphipod Gummarus minus are four tapered blind pouches lined with a simple columnar epithelium bearing an apical surface of regular microvilli and resting on a basement membrane. This epithelium is enclosed by a tonic, striated muscularis. Each caecum consists of three regions. The distal zone is formed of embryonic cells having a high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and giving rise to the other cell types. The second or differentiation zone consists of regular tall columnar cells of two morphological types:(1) light staining R-cells which have a large

Formulation of an exoskeleton degrading bacterial consortium from seafood processing effluent for the biocontrol of crustacean parasite Alitropus typus.

Parasitic infestations on cultured fish due to the crustacean isopod Alitropus typus has been on the rise in recent years, causing large scale mortality, leading to significant economic loss to the farmer. Crustaceans are encased by an exoskeleton composed of chitin, protein and lipid microfibril frameworks, in which calcium carbonate is deposited. A strategy focused on the degradation of the exoskeletal framework utilizing nonpathogenic microorganisms that produce a wide variety of hydrolytic enzymes may be an environment-friendly and safe alternative to control these pests. Seasonal influence of parasitism on contamination patterns of the mud shrimp Upogebia cf. pusilla in an area of low pollution.

Very few studies have characterized the concentrations of pollutants in bioturbating species. These species are considered as ecosystem engineers and characterizing stressors, such as contaminants, that impact them could lead to a better understanding of the functioning of ecosystems. In addition to contaminants, bioturbators are affected by a wide range of stressors, which can influence their physiological status and their ability to accumulate pollutants. Among these stressors, parasitism is of particular concern due to the ubiquity of parasites in natural environments and their influence on

Rhopalione kali sp. nov., first known epicaridean parasite on the Malaysian pinnotherid crab, Serenotheres besutensis (Serène, 1967).

Species of the bopyrid isopod genus Rhopalione Pérez, 1920, are parasites of Indo-West Pacific pinnotherid crabs. Unlike other bopyrid parasites of brachyurans that occupy the branchial chambers, however, species of Rhopalione (subfamily Pseudioninae) infest the abdominal cavity. Prior to the present study, four species of Rhopalione were recognized: R. atrinicolae Page, 1985 (New Zealand), R. incerta (Bonnier, 1900) (Madagascar), R. sinensis Markham, 1990 (East Asia), and R. uromyzon Pérez, 1920 (Persian Gulf). A fifth species of Rhopalione, from Perhentian Besar, Malaysia, is described herei

Do behavioural defence mechanisms explain different levels of trematode infections in congeneric hosts?

Susceptibility and tolerance to parasite infection vary greatly between host species. The congeneric isopod species Austridotea annectens and Austridotea lacustris often occur in sympatry and can both serve as intermediate hosts for the trematode Maritrema poulini. However, the intensity and prevalence of infections vary greatly in natural populations, with A. annectens often being heavily infected and A. lacustris rarely being infected. To shed light on the factors that may be involved in infection avoidance in A. lacustris, 100 isopods were collected and experimentally exposed to M. poulini

Effects on survival and reproduction of Porcellio dilatatus exposed to different Cd species.

The woodlouse Porcellio dilatatus (Crustacea) is a suitable model organism as a biological indicator for the toxic effects evaluation induced by pollutants exposure in the environment. In this study, the influence of cadmium (Cd) species on survival and reproduction of isopods was investigated. Survival, growth and reproductive parameters (time to pregnancy, pregnancy duration, pregnancy and abortion occurrence, number of juveniles per female and juvenile weight) were recorded after isopods were exposed to two species of Cd deployed in food: Cd(Cys)(2) and Cd(NO(3))(2). There was a difference

Ceratothoa oestroides Infection in European Sea Bass: Revealing a Long Misunderstood Relationship.

Ceratothoa oestroides (Cymothoidea, Isopoda) is a generalist crustacean parasite that negatively affects the economic sustainability of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) aquaculture in the North-East Mediterranean. While mortalities are observed in fry and fingerlings, infection in juvenile and adult fish result in approximately 20% growth delay. A transcriptomic analysis (PCR array, RNA-Seq) was performed on organs (tongue, spleen, head kidney, and liver) from infected vs. Ceratothoa-free sea bass fingerlings. Activation of local and systemic immune responses was detected, particularly

Evaluation of newly designed flushing techniques for on-site remediation of arsenic-contaminated excavated debris.

Excavated debris (soil and rock) contaminated with geogenic arsenic (As) is an increasing concern for regulatory organizations and construction stakeholders. Chelator-assisted soil flushing is a promising method for practical on-site remediation of As-contaminated soil, offering technical, economic, and environmental benefits. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is the most prevalent chelator used for remediating As-contaminated soil. However, the extensive environmental persistence and potential toxicity of EDTA necessitate the exploration of eco-compliant alternatives. In this study, the

Parasitism-Induced Intersexuality in a Sexually Dimorphic Varunid Crab, Ptychognathus ishii (Decapoda: Varunidae).

Although many animals that perform sexual reproduction exhibit sexual dimorphism, individuals with intersex traits between the traits of males and females appear in some species, depending on environmental factors. Ptychognathus ishii, a varunid crab, exhibits distinctive sexual dimorphism in the morphology of its abdomen, chelipeds and setal tufts on the chelipeds. In this study, however, we report for the first time that intersex individuals with intermediate characters between those of males and females were occasionally found in wild populations. Morphological features of intersex individu

Mouthparts and their setae of the intertidal isopod Cirolana harfordi.

The cirolanid isopod Cirolana harfordi is described as a scavenger and a predator that lives in the intertidal region. In order to understand the microanatomy of the mouthparts and the setae that allow this animal to handle and eat its food, a scanning electron microscopy study was conducted. C. harfordi displays a variety in the types of setae distributed on its mouthparts in a site-specific fashion, including complex setae placed on the medial edge of the maxilliped and maxilla. Terminal pores in some setae were found to contain a cupule, which is a hemispherical structure, housed in the con

Host preference of an obligate fish parasitic isopod, Mothocya parvostis.

The ability to recognize and successfully infest an appropriate host during its early life is under strong natural selection in parasitic organisms, as it directly affects the parasite's fitness. Although many cymothoid isopods that parasitize fishes exhibit high host specificity at the species level, it remains unclear whether the manca (i.e., infective early-life stage) can actively recognize and selectively infest an appropriate host species. We conducted controlled aquarium experiments in which mancae were simultaneously presented with their primary host and a non-primary host species to a
