Evidence for a Novel X Chromosome in Termites.

Termites, together with cockroaches, belong to the Blattodea. They possess an XX/XY sex determination system which has evolved from an XX/X0 system present in other Blattodean species, such as cockroaches and wood roaches. Little is currently known about the sex chromosomes of termites, their gene content, or their evolution. We here investigate the X chromosome of multiple termite species and compare them with the X chromosome of cockroaches using genomic and transcriptomic data. We find that the X chromosome of the termite Macrotermes natalensis is large and differentiated showing hall marks

Clinical manifestations and cross-reactions between cockroaches and termites and identification of termites' major allergens.

The American cockroach (Periplaneta Americana, CRa A) is a strong risk factor for allergic sensitization and asthma morbidity. Molecular phylogenetic studies demonstrated termites are social cockroaches specialized in feeding on plant materials. We hypothesized that termite allergies may be misdiagnosed as cockroach allergies due to cross-reactivity in routine clinical tests. Herein, we identified the allergenic cross-reaction between CRa A and termites and determined the clinical significance of termite allergies. Sixteen subjects with a history of exposure to termites, nine (56%) had a posit

De Novo Transcriptome Assembly and Analysis of Longevity Genes Using Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes chinensis) Castes.

The longevity phenomenon is entirely controlled by the insulin signaling pathway (IIS-pathway). Both vertebrates and invertebrates have IIS-pathways that are comparable to one another, though no one has previously described de novo transcriptome assembly of IIS-pathway-associated genes in termites. In this research, we analyzed the transcriptomes of both reproductive (primary kings “PK” and queens “PQ”, secondary worker reproductive kings “SWRK” and queens “SWRQ”) and non-reproductive (male “WM” and female “WF” workers) castes of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis. The goal was

Struvite for composting of agricultural wastes with termite mound: Utilizing the unutilized.

Although, compost is the store house of different plant nutrients, there is a concern for low amount of major nutrients especially nitrogen content in prepared compost. The present study deals with preparation of compost by using agricultural wastes with struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) along with termite mound. Among four composting mixtures, 50kg termite mound and 2.5kg struvite with crop residues (stover of ground nut: 361.65kg; soybean: 354.59kg; potato: 357.67kg and mustard: 373.19kg) and cow dung (84.90kg) formed a good quality compost within 70days of composting having nitrogen, phosphorus and

Identification of a pheromone regulating caste differentiation in termites.

The hallmark of social insects is their caste system: reproduction is primarily monopolized by queens, whereas workers specialize in the other tasks required for colony growth and survival. Pheromones produced by reigning queens have long been believed to be the prime factor inhibiting the differentiation of new reproductive individuals. However, there has been very little progress in the chemical identification of such inhibitory pheromones. Here we report the identification of a volatile inhibitory pheromone produced by female neotenics (secondary queens) that acts directly on target individ

Acute otalgia: a case report of mature termite in the middle ear.

Acute otalgia during childhood is one of the most common complaints in general ENT practice. It may occur as a result of acute otitis externa, otitis media or a foreign body. Animate foreign body in the ear canal or in the middle ear usually results in otalgia and hearing loss. We present a rare case of a living mature termite in the middle ear of a 9-year-old girl complaining of intermittent attacks of otalgia associated with a loud cracking sound in the left ear. In this case, a small perforation of the tympanic membrane without a history of previous trauma, infection, or evidence of a forei

Advanced lignocellulose bioprocessing for Aloe vera leaf rind through novel termite gut microbiome consortia for acetone butanol ethanol (ABE) production: Metagenomics insights and process economic analysis.

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) using microbes simplifies the process, eliminates enzyme cost and reduces the overall processing expenses. In this regard, termite gut, a potent reservoir of microbial symbionts produces various lignocellulolytic enzymes which acts synergistically to degrade LCB. However, the effectiveness of adapting the microbes with LCB for improved lignocellulolytic enzyme secretion and substrate degradation in a biorefinery framework has been overlooked. Hence, in this study adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) of termite gut isolates was pe

Genome reduction and horizontal gene transfer in the evolution of Endomicrobia-rise and fall of an intracellular symbiosis with termite gut flagellates.

Bacterial endosymbionts of eukaryotic hosts typically experience massive genome reduction, but the underlying evolutionary processes are often obscured by the lack of free-living relatives. Endomicrobia, a family-level lineage of host-associated bacteria in the phylum Elusimicrobiota that comprises both free-living representatives and endosymbionts of termite gut flagellates, are an excellent model to study evolution of intracellular symbionts. We reconstructed 67 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of Endomicrobiaceae among more than 1,700 MAGs from the gut microbiota of a wide range of termi

Identification and Enantiodivergent Synthesis of (5 Z,9 S)-Tetradec-5-en-9-olide, a Queen-Specific Volatile of the Termite Silvestritermes minutus.

The queens of social insects differ from sterile colony members in many aspects of their physiology. Besides adaptations linked with their specialization for reproduction and extended lifespan, the queens also invest in the maintenance of their reproductive dominance by producing exocrine chemicals signaling their presence to the nestmates. The knowledge of the chemistry of queen-specific cues in termites is scarce. In addition to the contact recognition based on cuticular hydrocarbons, long-range signals mediated by volatiles are expected to participate in queen signaling, especially in popul

Hydrogen cyanide-producing rhizobacteria kill subterranean termite Odontotermes obesus (Rambur) by cyanide poisoning under in vitro conditions.

The subterranean termite Odontotermes obesus is an important pest of the Indian subcontinent, causing extensive damage to major agricultural crops and forest plantation trees. Control of termites by strategies employing their parasites has limitations because they have evolved a complex social structure, immune responses, and adaptive behavior toward pathogen-infected individuals. Nonparasitic rhizobacteria that produce harmful metabolites might facilitate the biocontrol of termites. In the present investigation, three different species of hydrogen cyanide-producing rhizobacteria were tested f

Paralizing activity of the Parawixia bistriata crude venom in termites: a new bioassay.

Spider venoms have high specificity to neuronal elements. Therefore, the use of venom has been important in the characterisation of mammal and insect nervous systems. The evaluation of insect paralysis has been an important tool for distinguishing the biological effects of venom. In this study we describe the paralysing effect of a spider crude venom (Parawixia bistriata) in termites, utilising a new bioassay. The crude venom of P. bistriata caused an irreversible and dose-dependent paralysis in the animals in the following doses: 2.10(-5) U; 2.10(-4) U; 2.10(-3) U; 2.10(-2) U and 0.12 U (1 U

Novel xylanase activity and biofuel production in Lacrimispora xylanolytica isolated from termite guts symbionts.

Xylanase is crucial for converting lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars, yet challenges such as thermostability, narrow pH activity ranges, and high production costs hindered recent advancements. The strain Ter3, isolated from termite guts and confirmed in both termite guts and nest soil via polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, shares 99 % sequence similarity with Lacrimispora xylanolytica sy1. Ter3 produces 37-kilodalton extracellular endo-1,4-β-xylanase with an activity of 951.2 ± 25.9 U/mg at pH 6.5 and 50℃. Additionally, it generates 2,987.9 ± 31.1

Venom Function of a New Species of Megalomyrmex Forel, 1885 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Alkaloids are important metabolites found across a variety of organisms with diverse ecological functions. Of particular interest are alkaloids found in ants, organisms well known for dominating the ecosystems they dwell in. Within ants, alkaloids are found in venom and function as potent weapons against heterospecific species. However, research is often limited to pest species or species with parasitic lifestyles and thus fails to address the broader ecological function of ant venom alkaloids. Here we describe a new species of free-living Megalomyrmex ant: Megalomyrmex peetersi sp. n. In addi

Trivirensols: Selectively Bacteriostatic Sesquiterpene Trimers from the Australian Termite Nest-Derived Fungus Trichoderma virens CMB-TN16.

The termite nest-derived fungus Trichoderma virens CMB-TN16 cultivated on rice-based media produced seven new first-in-class trimeric sesquiterpenes, trivirensols A-G (11-17). Structures inclusive of absolute configurations were assigned by detailed spectroscopic analysis and biosynthetic considerations. Although trivirensols exhibit no cytotoxicity to mammalian carcinoma cells, selected examples are bacteriostatic against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE). Structure-activity relationship (SAR) investigations combined with in situ chemical stability studies documented bacteriost

Use of chemically activated termite feces a low-cost adsorbent for the adsorption of norfloxacin from aqueous solution.

Antibiotics, as emerging contaminants, are of global concern due to the development of antibiotic resistant microorganisms. Current wastewater treatment technology cannot efficiently remove sewage antibiotics and therefore new low-cost technologies are needed. Adsorption is a widely used process for removal of substances, and the search for efficient, low-cost adsorbents is ongoing. In this work, termite feces treated with H2SO4 (FT/H2SO4) were used as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of norfloxacin (NOR) present in aqueous medium. Termite feces were treated with H2SO4 at a ratio of 1:1 for 24

Therapeutic arthropods and other, largely terrestrial, folk-medicinally important invertebrates: a comparative survey and review.

Traditional healing methods involving hundreds of insect and other invertebrate species are reviewed. Some of the uses are based on the tenet of "similia similibus" (let likes be cured by likes), but not all non-conventional health promoting practices should be dismissed as superstition or wishful thinking, for they have stood the test of time. Two questions are addressed: how can totally different organ systems in a human possibly benefit from extracts, potions, powders, secretions, ashes, etc. of a single species and how can different target organs, e.g. bronchi, lungs, the urinary bladder,

Susceptibility and behavioral responses of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticollis to the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae.

Termites exploit microbially rich resources such as decayed wood and soil that are colonized by potentially pathogenic and parasitic fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. In colonies composed of thousands of individuals, the risk of infection among nestmates is significant, and individual and social behavior could involve various adaptations to resist disease and parasitism. Here we show that the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticollis (Hagen) exhibits a dosage dependent susceptibility to the soil nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) (Mexican strain) and that this social insect sig

Unrelated queens coexist in colonies of the termite Macrotermes michaelseni.

Relatedness increases the likelihood of cooperation within colonies of social insects. Polygyny, the coexistence of numerous reproductive females (queens) in a colony, is common in mature colonies of the termite Macrotermes michaelseni. In this species, polygyny results from pleometrosis and from several female alates that jointly found a new colony. To explain this phenomenon, it was suggested that only related females cooperate and survive during maturation of colonies. Using multilocus fingerprints as well as microsatellites, we showed that nestmate queens in mature colonies are unrelated.

The biological activity in mammals and insects of the nucleosidic fraction from the spider Parawixia bistriata.

Previous work has shown that the crude venom of Parawixia bistriata induces convulsive seizures in rats after intracerebroventricular injection. In this work, the isolation of a bioactive fraction with ultraviolet absorption characteristics of nucleic acid and trace protein or amino acid content is described. NMR analysis demonstrated that the major component of the active fraction is the nucleoside inosine. An analogue of this component (inosine 5'-monophosphate) induced a delayed paralysis effect in termites.

Impact of large termites (Macrotermes subhyalinus) meal on growth performance and carcass attributes of broiler chickens.

The rising cost of conventional protein sources including soybean and fishmeal, driven by climate change and overexploitation, threatens the economic sustainability of poultry production in sub-Saharan Africa. Insects, for eample, the large termite (Macrotermes subhyalinus) provide a promising, locally available, nutrient-dense alternative. This study evaluated graded levels of large termite meal on growth performance and carcass traits of broiler chickens. One hundred day-old Cobb-500 chicks were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% termite meal) in a comple
