A total of 298 Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) feeding on humans in the Czech Republic were tested for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) by darkfield microscopy between 1997 and 2003. A majority (68%) of the supplied I. ricinus ticks were nymphs, 25% were females and 7% were larvae. Overall, 20% of 74 examined females and 9% of 203 examined nymphs (but none of 21 examined larvae) were infected with borreliae. The proportion of ticks with a high infection load (>100 spirochetes) was 4% in females and 2% in nymphal I. ricinus. During the year, the highest numbers and propor

The Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi naturally persists in a cycle that primarily involves ticks and mammals. We have now identified a tick receptor (TROSPA) that is required for spirochetal colonization of Ixodes scapularis. B. burgdorferi outer surface protein A, which is abundantly expressed on spirochetes within the arthropod and essential for pathogen adherence to the vector, specifically bound to TROSPA. TROSPA mRNA levels in ticks increased following spirochete infestation and decreased in response to engorgement, events that are temporally linked to B. burgdorferi entry into and

Members of the jingmenviruses group have been found in arthropods and mammals on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Two viruses of this group were isolated from patients with fever after a tick bite. Using a nested RT-PCR assay targeting a jingmenvirus polymerase gene fragment, we screened ticks collected in seven regions of Russia and found that the abundant jingmenvirus-positive were of Ixodes ricinus species, with the prevalence ranging from 19.8% to 34.3%. In all cases, DNase/RNase treatment suggested that the detected molecule was DNA and subsequent next generation sequencing

We report the presence of Ixodes inopinatus and its sympatric occurrence with Ixodes ricinus in southeastern Germany, western Austria, and Romania. The identification of I. inopinatus was based on morphological and molecular 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA gene features. We also report the finding of Rickettsia monacensis and Rickettsia helvetica in I. inopinatus collected from a fox and a sheep in Romania. Although the vector competence of I. inopinatus for these pathogens remains to be proven, there is evidence of transstadial persistence, an important prerequisite for acting as a vector.

Ticks, including the Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes scapularis hard tick species, are regarded as the most common arthropod vectors of both human and animal diseases in Europe and the United States capable of transmitting a large number of bacteria, viruses and parasites. Since ticks in larval and nymphal stages share the same host community which can harbor multiple pathogens, they may be co-infected with two or more pathogens, with a subsequent high likelihood of co-transmission to humans or animals. This paper is devoted to the modeling of co-infection of tick-borne pathogens, with special focus

The importance of Ixodes ricinus in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens is well recognized in the United Kingdom and across Europe. However, the role of coexisting Ixodes species, such as the widely distributed species Ixodes trianguliceps, as alternative vectors for these pathogens has received little attention. This study aimed to assess the relative importance of I. ricinus and I. trianguliceps in the transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti among United Kingdom field voles (Microtus agrestis), which serve as reservoir hosts for both pathogens. While all instars of

The distribution of I. scapularis, the tick vector of the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, has been expanding over the last two decades in the north-central United States in parallel with increasing incidence of human cases of Lyme disease in that region. However, assessments of residential risk for exposure to ticks are lacking from this region. Here, we measured the density of host-seeking I. scapularis nymphs in two suburban and two rural public recreational sites located in Washington County, Minnesota as well as in nearby residential properties. We sought to compare tick densities across

Borrelia miyamotoi, a hard tick-borne relapsing fever agent, was sampled in Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus ticks from the Tver province in Russia (a sympatric region of both tick species) and examined by TaqMan-PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Borrelia was detected in 4 out of 168 ticks: 2 out of 58 I. ricinus ticks (infection rate 2.9%) and 2 out of 110 I. persulcatus ticks (1.8%). The agent was identified as B. miyamotoi on the basis of the 16S and 23S rDNA intergenic spacer and glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase gene sequencing analyses. Interestingly, the genes sequences detect

Tick-borne viruses (TBVs) threaten human and animal health in northern Europe, where Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus are expanding their range. In Finland, the genetic diversity, population structure, and tick-associated RNA virome of these species remain insufficiently characterized. Characterizing tick-borne viruses in Finland is essential to detect emerging pathogens at the northern edge of tick expansion, where climate-driven ecological change may facilitate the spread of novel viruses with potential risks to human and animal health. We applied single-tick metatranscriptomic approach

Lyme disease has increased both in incidence and geographic extent in the United States and Canada over the past two decades. One of the underlying causes is changes during the same time period in the distribution and abundance of the primary vectors: Ixodes scapularis Say and Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls in eastern and western North America, respectively. Aside from short periods of time when they are feeding on hosts, these ticks exist in the environment where temperature and relative humidity directly affect their development, survival, and host-seeking behavior. Other important factor

Mate choice influences levels of inbreeding and genetic diversity in natural populations. Positive assortative mating (PAM), for instance, has been described in Ixodes ricinus L., but this behavior has yet to be investigated in the closely related Ixodes scapularis Say, 1821. By analyzing nine microsatellite loci of 30 females and 30 males removed in copula from hunter-harvested deer specimens at the Savannah River Site (South Carolina) during the hunting season of fall 2010, we found a weak but significant assortative pairing signature in a population that, otherwise, appeared genetically hom

Ixodes ricinus is the most medically relevant tick species in Europe because it transmits the pathogens that cause Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Northern Spain represents the southernmost margin of its main European range and has the highest rate of Lyme borreliosis hospitalisations in the country. Currently, the environmental determinants of the spatiotemporal patterns of I. ricinus abundance remain unknown in this region and these may differ from drivers in highly favourable areas for the species in Europe. Therefore, our study aimed to understand the main factors modulating

We detected Borrelia bavariensis in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected near 2 towns in the United Kingdom. Human B. bavariensis infections have not been reported previously in the country, underscoring the value of tick surveillance to warn of emerging human disease. B. bavariensis should be considered in patients with suspected neuroborreliosis.

Cases of Lyme disease in humans are on the rise in the United States and Canada. The vector of the bacteria that causes this disease is the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Current control methods for I. scapularis mainly involve chemical acaricides. Unfortunately, ticks are developing resistance to these chemicals, and more and more, the public prefers non-toxic alternatives to chemical pesticides. We discovered that volcanic glass, ImergardTM WP, and other industrial minerals such as Celite 610 were efficacious mechanical insecticides against mosquitoes, filth flies, and agricultural pes

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is a three-host tick, a principal vector of Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.) and one of the main vectors of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean with subpolar oceanic climate. During the past 3-4 decades, average temperature has increased, supporting more favourable conditions for ticks. Reports of I. ricinus have increased in recent years. If these ticks were able to establish in a changing climate, Iceland may face new threats posed by tick-borne diseases.
METHODS: Active field surveillance by tick flagging was conducted a

The evidence that climate warming is changing the distribution of Ixodes ticks and the pathogens they transmit is reviewed and evaluated. The primary approaches are either phenomenological, which typically assume that climate alone limits current and future distributions, or mechanistic, asking which tick-demographic parameters are affected by specific abiotic conditions. Both approaches have promise but are severely limited when applied separately. For instance, phenomenological approaches (e.g. climate envelope models) often select abiotic variables arbitrarily and produce results that can b

Ixodes ricinus transmits Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the etiological agent of Lyme disease. Previous studies have also detected Rickettsia helvetica, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Neoehrlichia mikurensis, and several Babesia species in questing ticks in The Netherlands. In this study, we assessed the acarological risk of exposure to several tick-borne pathogens (TBPs), in The Netherlands. Questing ticks were collected monthly between 2006 and 2010 at 21 sites and between 2000 and 2009 at one other site. Nymphs and adults were analysed individually for the presence of TBPs using an array-appr

Bartonella spp. is an etiologic agent of vector-borne infections. Bartonella spp. was searched for in adult Ixodes ricinus ticks removed from dogs and cats using specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence analysis of gltA gene. Bartonella henselae DNA was detected in 5 of 102 tested ticks. All PCR-positive ticks were removed from dogs. Four of were engorged, one was unfed. The data demonstrate that B. henselae is able to inhabit ticks. This is the first report about the existence of B. henselae in ticks removed from dogs. It is, however, an open issue that needs further investigatio
