This study evaluates the types and distribution of oral and maxillofacial tumours in north Jordanian children and adolescents. The records of the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science & Technology, during the period 1991-2000, were reviewed for patients younger than 19 years with oral and maxillofacial tumours. The tumours were analysed for age, sex, site and type. Out of all maxillofacial tumours, 23% occurred in children and adolescents, of these 10% were malignant and 90% were benign. 73% of the latter were soft tissue tumours and 17% were jaw tumours (58% odontogenic and

Delayed eruption of a single primary tooth is an uncommon event. Excluding a previous traumatic insult, the presence of a pericoronal odontogenic cyst or neoplasm is the primary cause for this abnormality. This case report describes the clinical and radiographic features of an ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a young child, who presented with delayed eruption of the primary mandibular canine and prominent buccal expansion. A differential diagnosis for mixed, radiolucent and radiopaque lesions of the jaws will be discussed.

Giant cell granuloma (GCG) of the jaw is a rare, well-known feature of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), an inborn multisystem disorder. Recently, the development of GCG in NF1 was attributed to second hit mutations in the NF1 gene. The treatment of GCG is pragmatic with a preference for local curettage of lytic osseous areas. This report describes the surgical therapy of an NF1-affected female with multilocular mandibular GCG and hypodontia who additionally suffered from a brain tumour and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Although local recurrence of GCG was noted, augmentation of the curetted cavities

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, resulting in hypophosphatemia and altered bone turnover. It is most frequently caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs), a rare and distinct group of neoplasms. Patients with TIO exhibit clinical features of osteomalacia, including bone and muscle pain, severe muscle weakness, gait disturbance, and increased susceptibility to fracture. PMTs exhibit pananatomic distribution, in soft tissue or bones, but are most commonly found in the lower extremities, followed by the head and ne

Gorlin syndrome is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterised by multiple basal cell naevi, cysts of the jaw, pits of the palms and soles, skeletal anomalies, and various other defects. Patients with Gorlin syndrome have a predisposition to basal cell carcinomas and other neoplasms. This is the first report to describe the coexistence of Gorlin syndrome and a nasal dermoid cyst. A 4 year old girl was diagnosed with medulloblastoma and treated with surgery and radiation therapy. A genetic evaluation was sought because of the brain tumour, multiple small naevi localised mostly on t

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is an osteofibrous neoplasm that originates in the craniofacial skeleton typically during the first three decades of life. JPOFs usually involve the orbit, paranasal sinuses or the jaws. Extensive involvement of the anterior cranial base with compromised visual function is a rare phenomenon. In such clinical context, a definite diagnosis can only be made on the basis of histopathological findings, given the absence of pathognomonic radiological features. Despite being considered a benign entity, JPOFs present a locally aggressive behavior. Therefo

Currently, central cemento-ossifying fibroma is classified by the World Health Organization as a primary bone-forming tumor of the jaws. However, histopathologically, it is often indistinguishable from cemento-osseous dysplasias in that it forms osteoid and cementicles (cementum droplets) in varying proportions. It is believed that pluripotent cells within the periodontal membrane can be stimulated to produce either osteoid or woven bone and cementicles when stimulated. If this is true, cemento-ossifying fibroma would be better classified as a primary odontogenic neoplasm arising from the peri

Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement of plasma cell neoplasms is extremely rare. Herein, we describe the case of a 74-year-old Caucasian woman who came to our attention with abdominal pain, food vomiting, and weight loss of 10 kg over 1 year. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed circumferential thickening of terminal ileum, for which the patient underwent an urgent 20-cm-long ileal resection. Histopathological and immunophenotypic analysis revealed a plasma cell neoplasm of the ileum. Subsequent investigations found a serum monoclonal immunoglobulin A component, an osteolytic lesion

Patients with signs and symptoms of giant cell arteritis may have normal temporal artery biopsy specimens. To study the relationships between signs and symptoms of this disease and the ultimate clinical diagnosis, we reviewed 51 patients who had undergone temporal artery biopsy. The mean age of the patients with abnormal biopsy specimens was higher than that of patients with normal biopsy specimens. We found headache, fever, and jaw claudication were useful symptoms in predicting abnormal biopsy specimens. The ultimate diagnoses of patients with normal biopsy specimens and no response to treat

Familial syndromes of hyperparathyroidism, including multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A), and the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT), comprise 2-5% of primary hyperparathyroidism cases. Familial syndromes of hyperparathyroidism are also associated with a range of endocrine and nonendocrine tumors, including potential malignancies. Complications of the associated neoplasms are the major causes of morbidities and mortalities in these familial syndromes, e.g., parathyroid carcinoma in HPT-JT syndrome; thymic, bronchial, and enteropancreatic

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features, survival rate, and potential prognostic markers of the jaws' primary intraosseous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PIACC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Embase searches were performed with the keywords "adenoid cystic carcinoma," and "jaw," or "maxilla," or "mandible." We included articles that evaluated cases diagnosed as PIACC in jaws. Studies with insufficient demographic data, inconclusive histopathologic diagnosis, and appropriate follow-up were excluded. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used to assess t

BACKGROUND/AIM: Osteonecrosis of the jaws is being increasingly reported in patients with bone metastasis from a variety of solid tumours and disseminated multiple myeloma receiving intra-venous bisphosphonates. The signs and symptoms that may occur before the appearance of clinical evident osteonecrosis include changes in the health of periodontal tissues, non-healing mucosal ulcers, loose teeth and unexplained soft-tissue infection. A series of nine periodontally involving patients showing osteonecrosis of the jaws that appeared following the intra-venous use of bisphosphonates is reported.

INTRODUCTION: There is a jaw cancer that develops in children five to eight years old in holoendemic malaria regions of Africa, associated to malaria and Epstein Barr virus infections (EBV). This malignancy is known as endemic Burkitt's lymphoma, and histopatologically is characterized by a starry sky appearance. To date, no histopathologic expression of Burkitt's lymphoma has been reported in non-genetically manipulated experimental animals. The purpose of the study is to describe the case of a mouse immune to Plasmodium yoelii yoelii (Pyy) that developed a Burkitt's lymphoma-like neoplasm af

Hepatoblastoma is a rare neoplasm of infants and children only recently documented in association with hereditary adenomatous polyposis of the colon [Kingston et al., 1983]. We report four children with hepatoblastoma from four unrelated families with Gardner syndrome (GS). One child, now 19 years old, survived after a resection of a hepatoblastoma in infancy and recently was found to have GS. He has an associated odontoma and pigmented ocular fundus lesions, both of which have been shown to be clinical markers of GS. Many individuals in these four GS families, both affected and at risk, have

This report presents an extremely rare case of MAML2-rearranged primary central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the mandible that was discovered as an incidental finding. Our review of the literature identified 36 cases of MAML2-rearranged intraosseous lesions of the jaw (30 central MECs, 5 odontogenic cysts with mucous prosoplasia, and 1 glandular odontogenic cyst). Given the therapeutic indications for a diagnosis of MEC (a malignant neoplasm), MAML2 rearrangement should be confirmed in suspected cases of central MEC.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign intra-osseous neoplasm characterized by the formation of abundant collagen fibers. It arises most commonly in the jaws and exhibits local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates after local resection. An uncommon case of expansive DF involving the right maxilla, maxillary sinus, and inferior orbital wall of a 49-year-old man whose initial symptoms were similar to acute sinusitis is presented, and the criteria for diagnosis and clinical management are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To detect and quantify adverse drug event (ADE) signals linked to 120 mg denosumab in the real world.
METHODS: We queried the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) for reports on 120 mg denosumab, standardized, and categorized these events with Preferred Terms (PT) and System Organ Classes (SOC) from MedDRA version 27.1. Disproportionality analysis was performed using the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN).
RESULTS: We identified 10,963 ADE reports for 120 mg of denosumab. Among 10 963 reports, 41.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that can create clinical problems in the masticatory musculature, jaws, occlusion, and other associated structures and is commonly accompanied by inflammatory changes and pain. Many cases of TMJ dysfunction can be managed with nonsurgical therapies, but patients with irreversible TMJ damage may require surgical intervention for repair or reconstruction. Despite various methods of TMJ reconstruction, the patient-fitted total joint prostheses may be the best option to achieve good outcomes. Multicystic ameloblastoma is a beni

Lymphoma in the jaw bone is a rare malignant neoplasm with heterogeneous nature diagnosis of which requires utmost knowledge of cellular morphology and tissue architecture. The lineage of the neoplastic lymphocytes, whether it is B- or T-cell or mixed in nature, is designated by cluster of differentiation numbers. Broad classification of malignant lymphoma includes Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which have various subtypes. An unusual case of a B-cell lymphoma in the mandible in a middle-aged male patient is presented herewith clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally benign neoplasm of high aggressive behavior found exclusively in the jaws. OM commonly occurs in the second and third decade, its quite rare to find in maxilla that to invading the maxillary sinus completely. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. The radiographic features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. This article presents a case of OM of maxilla in a 13-year-old boy, which was previously diagnosed as fibrosseous lesion with the help of CT.
