Ethnic Disparities in Chronic Diseases: Comparison Between Arabs and Jews in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The lifestyle of the Arab population in Israel has changed in the last few decades, and modernization and urbanization have impacted the prevalence of chronic diseases. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of chronic diseases in the Arab population compared to the Jewish population in Israel. METHODS: This retrospective study included Arab and Jewish people insured by Israel's largest health maintenance organization. Demographic data and data regarding chronic diseases were collected. Crude prevalence and age group adjusted prevalence were calculated. RESULTS: In total, 863

Unpleasant Business: Rat, Jew, Payment, and Covenant in Freud's RAT Man.

Freud's repression of Judaism and its cultural markers from the published "Rat Man" case history has been noted but never satisfactorily explained. This elision can be interpreted using Freud's suggestion that the paradigmatic "rat" represents (among other things) a circumcised penis marking an intergenerational, covenantal exchange. When read against the case study as originally published, Freud's process notes for the Rat Man's treatment (the only set of such notes on a published case that Freud didn't destroy) suggest that Freud chose to sanitize the published version of explicitly Jewish c

Type 2 Gaucher disease occurs in Ashkenazi Jews but is surprisingly rare.

Patients with Gaucher disease (GD) are divided into three types based on the presence and rate of progression of the neurologic manifestations. While type 1 GD has a strong predilection in the Jewish Ashkenazi population, both other types lack such a propensity. We report the occurrence of type 2 GD (GD2) in four pregnancies in two Jewish families in Israel (in one case the mother was not Ashkenazi but was from a Sfaradi Jewish family) and also review seven additional cases of GD2 in Ashkenazi Jewish families reported in the literature. Phenotypically, GD2 in Ashkenazi Jews does not differ sig

Joubert syndrome 2 (JBTS2) in Ashkenazi Jews is associated with a TMEM216 mutation.

Patients with Joubert syndrome 2 (JBTS2) suffer from a neurological disease manifested by psychomotor retardation, hypotonia, ataxia, nystagmus, and oculomotor apraxia and variably associated with dysmorphism, as well as retinal and renal involvement. Brain MRI results show cerebellar vermis hypoplasia and additional anomalies of the fourth ventricle, corpus callosum, and occipital cortex. The disease has previously been mapped to the centromeric region of chromosome 11. Using homozygosity mapping in 13 patients from eight Ashkenazi Jewish families, we identified a homozygous mutation, R12L, i

A bridge between hearts: mutual organ donation by Arabs and Jews in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The availability of organ transplants depends largely on the will of the donor families. Given the current state of affairs in Israel, the authors evaluated the stance of Jews and Arabs toward mutual organ donations. METHODS: Between October 1997 and December 1999, there were 4.8 million Jews and 1.09 million Arabs living in Israel. Data gathered from 22 general hospitals for this period yielded 373 potential organ donors and 171 families (45.8%) that consented to the procedure. Actual donation was obtained from 157 patients. The authors examined the characteristics of the potenti

[The persecution of Jews during the time of the plague (1349-50) in southern Netherlands].

Research on the persecutions of the Jews at the time of the 'Black Death' in the Southern Low Countries has overemphasized the responsibility of the flagellant movement. In fact, the specific role of the flagellants was confined to spreading the rumor that the Jews were conspiring to kill all Christians by well-poisoning. A closer look at three examples--the persecutions in Hainaut, Brussels and Leuven--reveals that the driving forces behind the pogroms and executions were local and municipal authorities, while the countess of Hainaut and the duke of Brabant were too weak politically to defend

An evaluation of common breast cancer gene mutations in a population of Ashkenazi Jews.

OBJECTIVES: In view of the recent reports of recurrent mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 in the Ashkenazi Jewish population, we have undertaken to assess the frequency of these mutations in this population attending for genetic counselling and risk assessment of familial breast cancer. DESIGN: Mutation screening for the 185delAG and the 5382insC mutations in BRCA1 and the 6174delT mutation in BRCA2 was performed on DNA samples from either subjects affected by breast or ovarian cancer or obligate gene carriers. The likelihood of the cancers being hereditary in each family was calculated. SUBJECTS:

"Immunity" of Ethiopian Jews to developmental dysplasia of the hip: a preliminary sonographic study.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the most common problems affecting the pediatric musculoskeletal system. The condition represents a broad spectrum of sonographic (anatomic) pathoanatomical situations, ranging from very mild dysplasia to full dislocation, manifesting clinically as stable or unstable hip joints, particularly in the neonatal period. The cause of DDH is unclear. Various theories suggest genetic, hormonal, mechanical, and geographic factors, along with hemotypology and a great variety of other factors, as causes for this condition. In the present study, sonograph

G6PD Mediterranean accounts for the high prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Kurdish Jews.

The Jews of Kurdistan are a small inbred population with a high incidence of beta-thalassaemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Recently, it was reported that the beta-thalassaemia in this population shows an unusual mutational diversity; 13 different mutations were identified, of which 4 had not previously been observed in any other population. In contrast, we now report that the G6PD deficiency, which has the highest known incidence in the world, and which affects about 70% of males, is almost entirely attributable to a single widespread mutation, G6PD Mediterranean.

Common founder BRCA2 pathogenic variants and breast cancer characteristics in Ethiopian Jews.

PURPOSE: BRCA1/2 founder pathogenic variants (PVs) occur in various populations, but data on the mutational spectrum in Africans are limited. We examined BRCA1/2 PVs in breast cancer patients of Ethiopian Jewish (EJ) origin. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed BRCA1/2 test results and clinical features of EJ breast cancer patients from seven medical institutions. We obtained heterozygote carrier rates in affected individuals from the laboratories of the largest Israeli HMO (Clalit). Population carrier frequency was determined in EJ controls. RESULTS: We identified three recurrent BRCA2 PVs

Inflammatory bowel disease: an emergent disease among Ethiopian Jews migrating to Israel.

BACKGROUND: The development and characteristics of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Ethiopian Jewish immigrants to Israel were investigated. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 7 tertiary care hospitals in Israel. Patients of Ethiopian origin with IBD >6 months were included. Time of disease onset after immigration and age at diagnosis were recorded. Randomly chosen patients with IBD of Ashkenazi Jewish origin served as controls. Demographics and clinical parameters were compared between the 2 cohorts. RESULTS: Thirty-two Ethiopian patients with IBD were compared with 33 Ashken

Exploring the motives of Israeli Jews who were living kidney donors to strangers.

Non-directed living donors are individuals who donate a kidney to a recipient with whom they have neither a genetic nor emotional relationship. Israel legalized this type of donation in 2008. After this law was implemented, living donations significantly expanded. The aim of this article was to determine the motivations, characteristics, and perioperative experiences of non-directed living donors in Israel. Three online questionnaires (own questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Rushton Self-Report Altruism Scale) were distributed to 180 Jewish kidney donors with the help of Matnat

Randomised trial of population-based BRCA testing in Ashkenazi Jews: long-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Unselected population-based BRCA testing provides the opportunity to apply genomics on a population-scale to maximise primary prevention for breast-and-ovarian cancer. We compare long-term outcomes of population-based and family-history (FH)/clinical-criteria-based BRCA testing on psychological health and quality of life. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial (RCT) (ISRCTN73338115) GCaPPS, with two-arms: (i) population-screening (PS); (ii) FH/clinical-criteria-based testing. SETTING: North London Ashkenazi-Jewish (AJ) population. POPULATION/SAMPLE: AJ women/men. METHODS: Populatio

Intellectual disability syndrome associated with a homozygous founder variant in SGSM3 in Ashkenazi Jews.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) impact both the development and functioning of the brain and exhibit clinical and genetic variability. RAP and RAB proteins, belonging to the RAS superfamily, are identified as established contributors to NDDs. However, the involvement of SGSM (small G protein signalling modulator), another member of the RAS family, in NDDs has not been previously documented. METHODS: Proband-only or trio exome sequencing was performed on DNA samples obtained from affected individuals and available family members. The variant prioritisation process focused on id

The Effect of GBA Mutations and APOE Polymorphisms on Dementia with Lewy Bodies in Ashkenazi Jews.

BACKGROUND: Glucocerebrosidase (GBA) gene mutations and APOE polymorphisms are common in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), however their clinical impact is only partially elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical impact of mutations in the GBA gene and APOE polymorphisms separately and in combination, in a cohort of Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) patients with DLB. METHODS: One hundred consecutively recruited AJ patients with clinically diagnosed DLB underwent genotyping for GBA mutations and APOE polymorphisms, and performed cognitive and motor clinical assessments. RESULTS: Thirty-two (32%) pa

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 in Israel: phenotype and genotype of a Jew Yemenite subpopulation.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 is an autosomal dominant ataxia with various phenotypes affecting Jews of Yemenite origin in Israel. Clinical and family pedigrees data of 125 Yemenite Jewish patients were collected in our clinic. All examined patients underwent a detailed neurological and bedside vestibular examination. Cytosine-adenine-guanine repeats size in the Ataxin-3 gene was measured, and patients with expanded cytosine-adenine-guanine repeats >44 were diagnosed genetically as having spinocerebellar ataxia type 3. We estimated a disease prevalence rate of about 29/100,000 in Jew of Yemeni

Genetic and environmental factors determining the development of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Libyan Jews.

The cluster of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) among Jews of Libyan origin is one of the largest in the world. A number of hypotheses have been proposed to account for this cluster, the most prevalent but unsubstantiated hypothesis being that a transmissible agent was ingested in the form of scrapie-infected sheep brains. It has, however, been shown that a modified host protein encoded by the gene specifying the scrapie amyloid precursor is critically involved in the pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as CJD, Gerstmann-Strüssler-Scheinker syndrome and Kuru. A mutati

Genetic variants associated with susceptibility of Ashkenazi Jews to West Nile virus infection.

The epidemiology of West Nile virus (WNV) in Israel is different from other neighbouring countries in the Middle East where disease burden has been minimal. We analysed a cohort of Ashkenazi Jewish patients with symptomatic WNV infection (n = 39), and WNV-negative controls (n = 61), for nine genetic variants that has been suggested to be associated with susceptibility to WNV. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms were significantly more frequent in WNV-infected than non-infected individuals, rs7280422 (MX1) [odds ratio (OR) 4·05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2·04-8·03, P < 0·001] and rs3213545 (
