OBJECTIVE: Joint hypermobility (JH) is a clinical condition in which the joints move beyond the expected physiological range of motion. JH can be accompanied by many musculoskeletal complaints. One of the common causes of musculoskeletal pain is shoulder pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS), shoulder adhesive capsulitis (AC), and JH in patients with shoulder pain.
METHODS: Patients aged between 18 and 70 years who presented at the physical medicine and rehabilitation outpatient clinic and who were diagnosed with SAIS o

Degenerative arterial disease does affect the ligamentum teres and the capsule of the hip joint. In this investigation, the frequency of these changes was investigated in four groups of patients with hip disease. It is concluded that the highest incidence of all of degenerative arterial disease is found in elderly patients with subcapital fractures and in young patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head after renal transplantation. The significance of this finding needs to be investigated further.

The insertion of the anterior temporomandibular joint capsule at the temporal bone constitutes an anatomic boundary of the joint. When condylar translation exceeds this site, the joint is classified as hypermobile. In this study, the distance from the apex of the articular eminence to the antero-superior capsule insertion was assessed in double-contrast arthrotomograms from 192 joints with and without disc displacement. Maximum condylar translation was also measured. The insertion point of the antero-superior capsule was, on the average, located 4.4 mm (SD, 1.7 mm) anterior to the apex of the

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) in paediatric population is limited by lack of reference values. One of such parameters is hip joint capsule thickness, postulated as an early measure for synovitis. However, the joint capsule is hardly a distinguished structure from slit synovial cavity in patients with little or no fluid collection. Therefore, in patients without effusion, it is more convenient to measure hip joint capsule thickness together with synovial cavity. The aim of the study was to establish percentile chart for hip joint capsule and synovial cavit

Arterial calcification due to CD73 deficiency (ACDC), an autosomal recessive disorder, manifests with extensive mineralization of the lower-extremity arteries as well as of hand and foot joint-capsules. This disease is caused by mutations in the NT5E gene which encodes CD73, a membrane-bound ecto-5'-nucleotidase hydrolyzing 5'-AMP into adenosine and Pi. To gain insight into the pathophysiologic details of ACDC, we have characterized a Nt5e(-/-) knock out mouse (Nt5e(tm1Jgsc)) deficient in CD73. These mice, when maintained on appropriate strain background, demonstrated stiffening of the joints

Posttraumatic limitation of forearm rotation can be the result of pathology at any location along the forearm axis. Scar contracture of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) capsule, independent of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), is one of the sources that may influence the pronosupination arc. We dissected the wrists of 8 fresh-frozen cadaver specimens to characterize the precise anatomy, relationships, and dynamic characteristics of the entire DRUJ capsule. Additionally, we performed surgical DRUJ capsulectomy in 9 patients with recalcitrant limited forearm pronosupination that wa

The authors describe 5 patients with rheumatoid arthritis; in 3 patients rupture of the synovial membrane and in 2 patients a calf cyst caused symptoms resembling a deep vein thrombosis. Contrast arthrography is of great help in differential diagnosis in conjunction with thorough anamnesis and clinical examination. The joint effusion plays a dominating role in the disease process, and treatment of the effusion is of the greatest importance for both prophylaxis and therapy of membrane rupture and calf cysts.

BACKGROUND: Anterior shoulder joint capsule thickening is typically present in osteoarthritic shoulders, but its association with specific patterns of glenoid wear is incompletely understood. We sought to determine the relationship between anterior capsular thickening and glenoid deformity in primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 134 consecutive osteoarthritic shoulders with magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans performed. Axial fat-suppressed magnetic resonance imaging slices were used to quantify the anterior capsular thickness in mil

Numerous musculoskeletal disorders are caused by thickened ligament, tendon stiffness, or fibrosis of joint capsule. Relaxin, a peptide hormone, can exert collagenolytic effect on ligamentous and fibrotic tissues. We hypothesized that local injection of relaxin could be used to treat entrapment neuropathy and adhesive capsulitis. Because hormonal effect depends on the receptor of the hormone on the target cell, it is important to confirm the presence of such hormonal receptor at the target tissue before the hormone therapy is initiated. The aim of this study was to determine whether there were

Distal Radioulnar Joint (DRUJ) dislocation is a commonly missed injury. A high clinical suspicion is required as the dislocation may not be obvious in the conventional views of radiographs. Volar DRUJ dislocations are far less common than the dorsal ones. Since triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is the major stabilizer of DRUJ, it is common that the irreducible DRUJ dislocation is associated with TFCC tear. We report a patient who had irreducible volar DRUJ dislocation blocked by the volar lip of sigmoid notch, with only isolated volar capsule rupture.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: In cases of low back pain associated with biomechanical lumbar instability, anterior interbody fixation can be used as a surgical treatment, but its affect on facet joint capsule strains is unknown.
PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a single-level anterolateral interbody fixation, the changes in lumbar facet joint capsule strains at the level of and adjacent to the fixation were evaluated.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Human cadaveric lumbar spine specimens were tested under displacement control before and after the addition of a single anterior thoracolumbar plate (ATLP) on th

Metatarsalgia is a common presenting symptom with an established list of differential diagnoses. The authors present a classification system and surgical treatment algorithm for chronic metatarsophalangeal pain due to metatarsophalangeal joint capsule tear. A series of 58 metatarsophalangeal joints with partial tear diagnosed by arthrogram and treated by surgical repair are reviewed. The authors propose a classification system based on preoperative arthrography and a surgical repair procedure for each type of three distinct patterns. A study was developed and funded to perform postoperative ar

The aim of this study was to investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings following autologous blood injection (ABI) for habitual temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation. MRI was performed one hour and four and twelve weeks after ABI, revealing three types of significant findings. The first type was similar to hematoma and/or joint effusion in the articular capsule of the TMJ (type I). The second showed sporadic and diffuse T2 emphasis around the TMJ capsule (type II). The third involved a decreased range of condyle movement compared to before ABI (type III). Furthermore, we analyze

BACKGROUND: The synergistic effect of the acromioclavicular (AC) capsule and coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments on AC joint stability has gained recent recognition for its importance. Biomechanical and clinical studies have shown the benefit of combined reconstruction with multiple variations of surgical techniques for AC capsule augmentation. The ideal configuration remains unknown for such capsular repair aimed at achieving optimal stability with anatomic reconstruction.
HYPOTHESIS: Primary AC joint stability can be restored by AC capsule augmentation, while position of the additional suture c

This paper examines the clinical problem of extensor tendon tethering and/or dorsal joint capsule tightening secondary to hand injury. One hundred and forty-one patients were examined 13 to 51 months after hand injuries of varying severity. Fifty-six patients (40%) had suffered simple and eighty-five patients (60%) complex injuries. Seventy-four (52%) of the 141 patients had no extensor tendon tethering and/or dorsal joint capsule tightening. In 30 (21%), the extensor tendon tethering and/or dorsal joint capsule tightening was considered to be "obvious" in that it was easily seen on examinatio

The lateral ligament of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been described as a short and narrow fibrous band attached to the lateral surface of the zygomatic arch and the neck of the condyle to limit joint motion. It is considered a significant contributor to TMJ stabilization. However, the existence of the ligament remains controversial. Therefore, this cadaveric study was performed to investigate the morphology of the lateral ligament and surrounding structures and discuss their contribution to TMJ stabilization. Nine TMJ from six adult cadavers were evaluated; the joints were fixed in 8%

Formulation of the problem Dislocation of the femoral component of the endoprosthesis is one of the most frequent complications of total hip replacement. The best option for the "treatment" of dislocation of the hip endoprosthesis is to prevent the development of primary instability. There are cases in which even with the correct installation of the endoprosthesis components, dislocations arise due to the weakness or defect of the capsular-ligament apparatus. Currently, many methods have been developed to strengthen and restore the posterior structures of the capsule of the hip joint with the
