Evaluation by Citation: Trends in Publication Behavior, Evaluation Criteria, and the Strive for High Impact Publications.

Criteria for the evaluation of most scholars' work have recently received wider attention due to high-profile cases of scientific misconduct which are perceived to be linked to these criteria. However, in the competition for career advancement and funding opportunities almost all scholars are subjected to the same criteria. Therefore these evaluation criteria act as 'switchmen', determining the tracks along which scholarly work is pushed by the dynamic interplay of interests of both scholars and their institutions. Currently one of the most important criteria is the impact of publications. In

Angiogenesis: a research field in full bloom.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the new journal impact factor for Angiogenesis: 11.2. This milestone reflects the vitality of our field and the extraordinary quality of the research our authors continue to entrust to us. Angiogenesis remains the premier international, peer-reviewed journal devoted to the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern blood vessel formation in health and disease, and this new metric confirms what we have long believed: the science of vascular biology has never been more central to biomedicine.

The Departmental Scholarly Index: A Metric of Research Productivity.

INTRODUCTION: While bibliometric ranking systems have been designed to use citations, funding, and alumni productivity, there is a need for a simple metric that objectively evaluates the work of a group or organization. The present study describes a bibliometric tool, the Departmental Scholarly Index (DSI), for this purpose. METHODS: Publications from academic plastic surgery programs in qualifying states of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons released in 2022 were collected via PubMed affiliation search. Publications were recorded in a running list alongside the t

High impact works on stem cell transplantation in intervertebral disc degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a major disorder that causes disability and is strongly associated with intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Because of the limitations of contemporary interventions, stem cell transplantation (SCT) has been increasingly used to regenerate degenerative discs. Nevertheless, analyses of high-impact papers in this field are rare. This study aimed to determine and analyze the 100 highest-cited documents on SCT in IDD. METHODS: The 100 highest-cited documents were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database. Descriptive statistics were calculated and correlatio

Journal of Diabetes: Ushering in Volume 10.

As developments progress in the understanding and treatment of diabetes, we take a moment to reflect on the Journal as it enters its 10th year. It has been a decade of tremendous change. In 2009, the diabetes community was recovering from the shock of ACCORD trial: 257 deaths over 3.5 years with an achieved HbA1c of 6.4% among 5128 intensively treated the high cardiovascular (CV) risk patients, compared with 203 deaths with an achieved HbA1c of 7.5% among 5123 having "standard treatment." Today, we see evidence of reduction in CV outcomes with a variety of treatments, including thiazolidinedio

Do corresponding authors take responsibility for their work? A covert survey.

BACKGROUND: Publication of a manuscript does not end an author's responsibilities. Reasons to contact an author after publication include clarification, access to raw data, and collaboration. However, legitimate questions have been raised regarding whether these responsibilities generally are being met by corresponding authors of biomedical publications. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study aims to establish (1) what proportion of corresponding authors accept the responsibility of correspondence; (2) identify characteristics of responders; and (3) assess email address decay with time.
