The feasibility of a novel skull base approach - the navigated minimally invasive presigmoidal suprabulbar infralabyrinthine approach (NaMIPSI-A) without rerouting of the fallopian canal for selected jugular foramen tumors (JFTs) - has been demonstrated in a neuroanatomical laboratory study. Here, we present our clinical experience with the NaMIPSI-A for selected JFTs, with a particular focus on its efficacy and safety. All patients with JFTs who were treated via the NaMIPSI-A were included in this study. The JFTs were classified according to a modified Fisch classification. The neurological a

OBJECTIVE The dura mater is made of 2 layers: the endosteal layer (outer layer), which is firmly attached to the bone, and the meningeal layer (inner layer), which directly covers the brain and spinal cord. These 2 dural layers join together in most parts of the skull base and cranial convexity, and separate into the orbital and perisellar compartments or into the spinal epidural space to form the extradural neural axis compartment (EDNAC). The EDNAC contains fat and/or venous blood. The aim of this dissection study was to anatomically verify the concept of the EDNAC by focusing on the dural l

BACKGROUND: Recently, stereotacitc radiosurgery (SRS) has been in the spotlight as an alternative therapeutic option for jugular foramen schwannomas (JFS). While most reported studies focus on the long-term efficacy and safety issues of SRS, none describe the early-onset adverse events (eAEs). We aimed to investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics, and mid-term outcomes of eAEs occurring within six months after SRS for JFS.
METHODS: In this retrospective review, patients who underwent at least six months of follow-up were included among all patients with JFS who have performed SRS at

Lesions arising from the upper parapharyngeal space (UPPS) often involved the jugular foramen region (JFR), occasionally extending into the posterior cranial fossa. This study aims to investigate the surgical anatomy of the JFR and UPPS from the perspective of an expanded endoscopic approach (EEA), tracing the lower cranial nerves from their extracranial foramina to the UPPS. Six cadaveric specimens (12 sides) underwent a transpterygoid EEA to expose the JFR and UPPS. Distances from the medial pterygoid plate (MPP) to the internal carotid artery (ICA), hypoglossal canal (HC), and jugular tuber

Progressive visual loss is the most common neurologic finding in osteopetrosis. Several mechanisms may explain this phenomenon, including compression of the optic nerves caused by bony overgrowth of the optic canals and retinal degeneration. We report a child with osteopetrosis and progressive visual loss, even though patent optic canals were demonstrated by computed tomography and digital holography. This patient's visual loss was caused by increased intracranial pressure secondary, to obstruction of cerebral venous outflow at the jugular foramen. This case points to the importance of a full

OBJECTIVE: This 3-dimensional histologic study aimed to provide a precise description of the meningeal structures in the jugular foramen.
METHODS: 22 posterior skull base tissue blocks containing the jugular foramen region were obtained from 11 human cadaveric heads. These blocks were plastinated and cut into serial sections. After staining, these sections were examined under an optical microscope and used to reconstruct a 3-dimensional visualization model.
RESULTS: At the intracranial orifice of the jugular foramen, the meningeal dura formed 2 separate dural perforations: the glossopharynge

The jugular foramen (JF) is a complex anatomical region transmitting cranial nerves IX-XI and the internal jugular vein, where variations in its dural and bony septations can influence tumor spread, venous drainage, and surgical access. This study examined the morphology and morphometry of the JF using 200 dry skulls and 39 formalin-fixed cadavers. Extracranial features, including bony septation (BS), jugular dome, and JF-stylomastoid foramen distance, were evaluated in skulls, while intracranial dural septation (DS), sigmoid sinus (SS) diameter, and JF-internal acoustic meatus distance was me

The vast majority of chondrosarcomas of the skull (CS) are located at the skull base and represent locally aggressive malignant tumors that account for 0.15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Complete surgical resection with wide surgical margins is currently the main treatment strategy, but can be hard to achieve due to the complex anatomy of the head and neck. The jugular foramen, situated in the floor of the posterior fossa and posterolaterally to the petro-occipital suture, is a remarkably rare location for CS. A case of primary CS of the jugular foramen in a 65-year-old patient is reported,

Posterior fossa dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) are rare vascular malformations. They carry a significant risk of hemorrhage if associated with cortical venous reflux. A 70-year-old man presented with right-sided medullary hemorrhage with pronounced Wallenberg syndrome. Angiography demonstrated right jugular foramen dAVF with direct brainstem venous reflux (Cognard IV). It was fed from multiple branches of the external carotid artery and the vertebral artery, and draining into the ascending pontomesencephalic vein. Primary two-stage transarterial embolization was performed with near-total

Permeative infiltration of the meninges appears to be a distinct form of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The present report of eight patients with recurrent NPC illustrates meningeal infiltration following basal foramina extension. Seven of the eight patients (88%) showed jugular foramen involvement. Three patients had concomitant infiltration of the foramen magnum. There was one patient showing spread through the foramen lacerum. Only four (50%) of these patients had clinically detectable tumour in the nasopharynx, while the other half showed deep submucosal recurrence with endoscop

BACKGROUND: Jugulotympanic paragangliomas (JTPs) are rare, hypervascular skull base tumors. Surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) are often framed as competing options, yet outcome data from Latin American public referral centers are scarce. We evaluated a function-first surgical strategy and related tumor stage to outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective single-center study of 24 consecutive patients with histopathologically confirmed JTP who underwent 32 resections (2016-2025), analyzed at patient and procedure level. Fisch class (A/B vs. C/D) was related to extent of resection, cranial nerve

Accurate anatomic knowledge of the jugular foramen (JF) is essential in skull base surgery, where morphologic variations-particularly ossified dural septations-can significantly impact surgical planning and outcomes. A recently described variant, the accessory foramen (AF) located on the inferior surface of the JF, may represent such ossified septations. This study aimed to assess the radiologic presence of AF using high-resolution computed tomography (CT). A retrospective analysis was conducted on 168 high-resolution head CT scans (336 sides). Scans were reconstructed in three dimensions (3D)

OBJECTIVE: The rectus capitis lateralis (RCL) is a small cervical muscle that arises from the transverse process of C1 and is intimately related to the jugular process and jugular foramen. We describe its morphology, neurovascular relationships, and its utility as one of the key surgical landmarks in approaches to the jugular foramen.
METHODS: Eight cadaveric heads were used to perform far-lateral and transmastoid approaches to the jugular foramen. The neurovascular relationships of the RCL were studied.
RESULTS: The RCL originates from the transverse process of C1 and inserts onto the jugul

Clarifying temporal changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a good chance to understand the pathology of neural lesions; however, such information is scarce in varicella zoster virus (VZV) neuropathies for the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves. Here, we present the changes in sequential MR images of such a pathology over a period of 12 months from symptom onset.A 27-year-old woman with difficulty in swallowing and hoarseness due to a palatal palsy and arytenoid fixation on the left presented 2 days after onset. MRI revealed a lesion which largely filled the left jugular foramen on T
