Activity against multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Mexican plants used to treat respiratory diseases.

The increase of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB) demands the search for alternative antimycobacterial drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate plants used in Mexican traditional medicine to treat respiratory diseases for activity against MDR-TB. A group of 22 plants was screened for activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and Mycobacterium avium at concentrations from 50 to 200 microg/mL. The antimycobacterial effect was determined by a microcolorimetric assay with Alamar blue dye. None of the aqueous extracts had antimycobacterial activity. Hexane extracts

An epidemiological survey of Cupressaceae pollenosis in Italy.

Allergic reaction to Cupressaceae and Taxodiaceae pollens appears to be on the increase in the last years in Italy. An epidemiological survey on this pollenosis was conducted in 12 Italian centers. The diagnostic panel consisted of seven Cupressaceae and Taxodiaceae genus (Cupressus sempervirens, Cupressus arizonica, Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Thuja orientalis, Taxus baccata, and Juniperus oxycedrus). A total of 3057 pollen-sensitized outpatients were examined. The study took place from November 1999 to March 2000. At the same time pollen counts were carried out. The prevalenc

Pilfering of western juniper seed caches by scatter-hoarding rodents varies by microsite and canopy type.

Scatter-hoarding rodents store seeds throughout their home ranges in superficially buried caches which, unlike seeds larder-hoarded in burrows, are difficult to defend. Cached seeds are often pilfered by other scatter-hoarders and either re-cached, eaten or larder-hoarded. Such seed movements can influence seedling recruitment, because only seeds remaining in caches are likely to germinate. Although the importance of scatter-hoarding rodents in the dispersal of western juniper seeds has recently been revealed, the level of pilfering that occurs after initial burial is unknown. Seed traits, soi

Cypress Pollinosis: from Tree to Clinic.

Cypress (Cupressus sp.pl) is a genus within the Cupressaceae family. This family covers all of the Earth's continents except for Antarctica, and it includes about 160 species. The most important taxa for allergic diseases belong to five different genera: Cupressus, Hesperocyparis, Juniperus, Cryptomeria, and Chamaecyparis. Cupressaceae species share a common pollen type that can even include the genus Taxus (Taxaceae) when this plant is also present. As Juniperus oxycedrus pollinates in October, Cupressus sempervirens in January and February, Hesperocyparis arizonica (prev. Cupressus arizonica

Host plant specificity and multi-level infestation patterns of scale insects in semi-arid forests of North Africa.

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) are important sap-feeding herbivores that influence plant physiology and contribute to forest ecosystem functioning. Despite their ecological importance, their host specificity and infestation dynamics remain insufficiently documented in Mediterranean semi-arid forests. This study investigated the distribution and ecological specialization of scale insects in Belezma National Park (Algeria), focusing on host tree species, plant communities, and infested plant parts. Significant variations (p = 0.006) in infestation rates were observed among host tree spec

Loss of Stomatal Regulation Sensitivity to CO2 and Reduced Xylem Hydraulic Conductivity Contribute to Long-Term Tree Decline and Mortality.

Increasing aridity is a major threat to forests worldwide. Understanding tree functional constraints under drought and their impacts on resilience and mortality among species is crucial to assess the impacts of global change on forests. We analyzed the long-term drought and atmospheric CO2 responses in three Mediterranean co-occurring species with differing drought tolerances (Pinus pinaster < Pinus pinea < Juniperus oxycedrus). In this mixed forest, P. pinaster exhibited widespread mortality and mistletoe infection, P. pinea showed scattered mortality, and J. oxycedrus showed no decline. Usin

Antidiabetic xanthones with α-glucosidase inhibitory activities from an endophytic Penicillium canescens.

Worldwide, 463 million people are affected by diabetes of which the majority is diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). T2D can ultimately lead to retinopathy, nephropathy, nerve damage, and amputation of the lower extremities. α-Glucosidase, responsible for converting starch to monosaccharides, is a key therapeutic target for the management of T2D. However, due to substantial side effects of currently marketed drugs, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new α-glucosidase inhibitors. In our ongoing efforts to identify novel α-glucosidase inhibitors from Nature, we are investigating the p

Herbal Amara extract induces gastric fundus relaxation via inhibition of the M2 muscarinic receptor.

BACKGROUND: Impaired gastric accommodation is one of the most frequent symptoms of functional dyspepsia. The safety and efficacy of conventional treatments remain to be proven and alternative herbal therapies have been proposed to alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms. This preclinical study examined the role of herbal Amara extract (containing Artemisia absinthium, Centaurium erythraea, Cichorium intybus, Gentiana lutea, Juniperus communis, Achillea millefolium, Peucedanum ostruthium, Salvia officinalis, and Taraxacum extracts) on gastric (fundus) accommodation and the possible implication of m

Cytotoxic Activity of Essential Oils from Middle Eastern Medicinal Plants on Malignant Keratinocytes.

Skin cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma cancers (basal and squamous cell carcinomas), is the most common type of cancer. UV radiation, family history, and genetic predisposition are the main risk factors. Although surgical excision is the standard treatment, essential oils are attracting growing interest for their anti-cancer effects. This study tested the effects of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. (Cupressaceae), Lavandula vera DC. (Lamiaceae), and Salvia fruticosa (Mill). (Lamiaceae) essential oils extracted from Middle Eastern medicinal plants on HaCaT (normal), A5 (benign), and II4 (lo

Effects of woody plant encroachment on abundance of multiple tick species in the U.S. Great Plains.

Vector-borne diseases are increasing in prevalence, posing a risk to 80% of the human population worldwide. In the United States, tick-borne diseases account for 75% of all nationally reported vector-borne disease cases. As the distribution of medically important ticks and tick-borne diseases increases, it is crucial to understand the factors driving their expansion. Changes in land cover are a known driver of vector-borne disease emergence and prevalence. In the U.S. Great Plains, a dominant form of land cover change affecting vectors and vector-borne diseases is woody plant encroachment (WPE

Hemorrhagic cystitis induced by an herbal mixture.

A healthy 33-year-old woman consumed a slimming product containing a mixture of herbal remedies without seeking medical advice. Two months later, the patient had hemorrhagic cystitis and discontinued the herbal product. Symptoms spontaneously remitted in a few days. Four months later, she took the same herbal remedy and the hemorrhagic cystitis reappeared. She then consulted her general practitioner. A urine culture test was negative, and the patient was advised to discontinue the herb intake. Again, the cystitis resolved within a week. The product involved contains a mixture of herbs, some of

[Cypress pollen allergy].

Cypress belongs to the Cupressaceae family, which includes 140 species with non-deciduous foliage. The most important genera in allergic diseases are Cupressus sempervirens or Green cypress, Cupressus arizonica or Blue cypress, Juniperus oxycedrus, Juniperus communis and Thuya. Because J. oxycedrus pollinates in October, C. sempervirens in January and February, C. arizonica in February and March, J. communis in April, the symptomatic period is long-lasting. Because of global warming, the pollination period is tending to last longer and Cupressaceae species are becoming established further the

Tick infestation of birds in grasslands experiencing woody plant encroachment in the United States Great Plains.

Woody plant encroachment is one of the largest threats to grasslands of the US Great Plains. Its spread, mainly due to fire suppression, affects entire ecosystems, including arthropod vectors, bird communities, and the ecology of vector-borne disease. Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana), one of the primary encroaching species in this region, is known to increase abundance of pathogen-carrying tick species such as Amblyomma americanum; however, the role birds play in carrying ticks in association with eastern redcedar encroachment is unknown. In areas of Oklahoma representing 3 stages of ea

Using the Specialization Framework to Determine Degree of Dietary Specialization in a Herbivorous Woodrat.

To be considered a dietary specialist, mammalian herbivores must consume large quantities of a plant species considered "difficult" with respect to nutrient or toxin content, and possess specialized adaptations to deal with plant defensive compounds or low nutritional content. Populations of Neotoma lepida in the Great Basin consume Juniperus osteosperma, a plant heavily defended by terpenes, but a detailed dietary analysis of this population is lacking. Therefore, we investigated the extent of dietary specialization in this species in comparison with the better-studied specialist species, N.
