The Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire in Relation to New York Heart Association Class.

BACKGROUND: In order to identify candidacy and treatment response for patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM), clinicians need an accurate means of assessing symptoms, function, and quality of life. While the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Classification is most often used for this purpose, the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-23) is more accurate and sensitive to change, although less familiar to practicing clinicians. To support interpreting the KCCQ-23, we describe cross-sectional and longitudinal changes in KCCQ scores in the context of the NYHA. METH

Seasonal Emission Factors from Rangeland Prescribed Burns in the Kansas Flint Hills Grasslands.

Operational-sized prescribed grassland burns at three mid-West U.S. locations and ten 1-ha-sized prescribed grassland burns were conducted in the Flint Hills of Kansas to determine emission factors and their potential seasonal effects. Ground-, aerostat-, and unmanned aircraft system-based platforms were used to sample plume emissions for a range of gaseous and particulate pollutants. The ten co-located, 1-ha-sized plots allowed for testing five plots in the spring and five in the late summer, allowing for control of vegetation type, biomass loading, climate history, and land use. The operatio

Rapid assessment of mosquitoes and arbovirus activity after floods in southeastern Kansas, 2007.

A rapid assessment was conducted in July-August 2007 to determine the impact of heavy rains and early summer floods on the mosquitoes and arbovirus activity in 4 southeastern Kansas counties. During 10 days and nights of collections using different types and styles of mosquito traps, a total of 10,512 adult female mosquitoes representing 29 species were collected, including a new species record for Kansas (Psorophora mathesoni). High numbers of Aedes albopictus were collected. Over 4,000 specimens of 4 Culex species in 235 species-specific pools were tested for the presence of West Nile, St. L

Breastfeeding duration and childhood overweight among low-income children in Kansas, 1998-2002.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether increased duration of breast-feeding was associated with decreased risk of overweight among 4-year-old children in Kansas families with limited means. METHODS: We linked data on Kansas families from the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System and Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System, 1998 to 2002, to determine breastfeeding duration and weight status at age 4 years. Overweight among 4-year-old children was defined as body mass index-for-age at the 95th percentile and above. Linked analysis included 3692 children. Logistic regression was applied to

Spatial and temporal modeling of breast cancer mortality in Kansas: An R-INLA approach.

INTRODUCTION: Based on Breast Cancer Statistics, 2025, breast cancer is a leading cause of death among women in the United States. Geographic disparities and associated risk factors influence breast cancer mortality over time and across spatial areas within the state of Kansas. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the spatial and temporal distribution of breast cancer mortality in Kansas, analyzing associations with socioeconomic, healthcare, and behavioral characteristics while accounting for geographic heterogeneity and temporality. METHODS: Using data from 105 counties within Kansas, breast

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin Kansas (Hb Kansas) is a rare disease with cyanosis. We report a case of anesthetic management for a patient with an acute aortic dissection complicated by Hb Kansas. CASE PRESENTATION: We encountered a 62-year-old male, surgical patient with an acute aortic dissection complicated by postoperative Hb Kansas. During anesthesia, his arterial oxygen saturation was low, while the partial pressure of arterial oxygen was within the normal range. The patient underwent ascending aortic replacement under hypothermic circulation arrest with a bladder temperature of 22 °C after int

A Survey of Safety Recommendations for All-Terrain Vehicle Dealers and Track Owners in Kansas.

INTRODUCTION: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are associated with injury, mortality, and healthcare costs. ATV related injuries are less severe when consistent safety practices are followed, however, ATV safety regulations are varied among states. This study sought to survey Kansas ATV dealers and track owners to determine safety promotion practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted of Kansas ATV dealers and tracks. Survey questions included promotion and sale of safety equipment, provision of ATV safety information, and respondent characteristics. RESULTS: Of those cont

The University of Kansas Cardiac Surgery Readmissions Committee: A Multidisciplinary Collaborative to Reduce Unplanned Readmissions.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned readmissions negatively affect hospital reimbursement and mortality. The purpose of this study was to describe the inception of a multidisciplinary readmissions group designed to reduce unplanned cardiac surgery readmissions. METHODS: Unplanned cardiac surgery readmissions within 30 days of discharge between 2021 and 2024 were analyzed by the University of Kansas Cardiac Surgery Readmissions Committee, consisting of inpatient and outpatient advanced practice providers, data managers, emergency department personnel, and cardiac surgeons. Construct and Predictive Validity of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire in Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: The Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) is an Food and Drug Administration-approved health status measure for patients with heart failure (HF) but has not been directly assessed in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates construct and predictive validity of the KCCQ in ambulatory ACHD patients. METHODS: We performed cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies of ACHD patients who completed the KCCQ to assess construct and predictive validity, respectively. KCCQ scores were compared across ACHD complexity categories, disease character

The Psychometric Performance of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire-12 in Symptomatic Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: A primary goal of treating patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM) is to improve their symptoms, function and quality of life. Although the psychometric properties of the 23-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-23) have been described in oHCM, they have not been assessed for the shorter 12-item version (KCCQ-12), which is used increasingly in clinical practice. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using data from the EXPLORER-HCM trial, the psychometric properties of the KCCQ-12 were evaluated. The KCCQ-12 domain and summary scores had moderate correlations wit

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Law Enforcement Officers on Rabies and Animal Control Issues in Kansas.

Rabies is a deadly zoonoses endemic in the United States, including Kansas. Animal control programmes that emphasize vaccination of dogs and cats, removal of stray animals and enforcement of licensure programmes have historically been essential in reducing the risk of rabies exposures to humans (Beran, 1991). Kansas does not mandate the use of animal control officers [ACOs] and in areas where there is no designated animal control officer, law enforcement officers [LEOs] are required to fill that role. Little is known about LEOs' knowledge of rabies, their current practices in responding to ani
