Kaposiform haemangioendothelioma of the spine associated with fixed hyperlordotic deformity and Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Kaposiform haemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare childhood disease classified by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) as a locally aggressive vascular tumor. It has been reported to affect any site, with a predilection for the extremities and trunk. Although it typically manifests as an enlarging cutaneous or soft tissue lesion, less than 10% of cases have no skin involvement, with the retroperitoneum being the most frequently involved extracutaneous site. Approximately twenty cases of KHE with bony involvement have been reported in the literature to date, with

Infantile hemangioendothelioma of the thymus with massive pleural effusion and Kasabach--Merritt syndrome: histopathological, flow cytometrical analysis of the tumor.

Infantile hemangioendothelioma of the thymus is a rare disease. We describe a patient who developed a large anterior mediastinal mass, severe thrombocytopenia and massive pleural effusion at 1 month of age. Glucocorticosteroid and irradiation therapy had no effect on either the tumor size or clinical symptoms and the tumor was resected subtotally. Three months after the subtotal resection, the remaining tumor had almost disappeared and the symptoms had resolved. The patient has now been well for 1 year after surgery without evidence of recurrence. The tumor tissue was characterized by prominen

MULTIPLE INFANTILE HEPATIC HAEMANGIOMA WITH KASABACH-MERRITT SYNDROME PRESENTING WITH RAISED INTRABDOMINAL PRESSURE AND TREATED WITH PROPRANOLOL: A CASE REPORT.

BACKGROUND: Infantile hepatic haemangioma is a common benign vascular malformation in the liver, however, its association with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, raised intrabdominal pressure and intestinal obstruction is rare. We report this case of syndromic infantile hepatic haemangioma to raise awareness for its suspicion in this unusual presentation and the role of propranolol in the management. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 3-month-old female who presented with abdominal swelling, difficulty in breathing, constipation, bilateral inguinal swellings and protrusion of the rectal mucosa. Ther

A case of neonate effectively treated with everolimus for giant hepatic hemangioma complicated with congenital duodenal atresia and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) with Kasabach-Merrit syndrome from a large hepatic hemangioma is life-threatening. We report a case of giant hepatic hemangioma of the newborn with KMS. RESULTS: The patient was born at 37 gestational weeks and 2 days via cesarean section; weight at birth was 2952 g. Congenital duodenal atresia was noted during the fetal period. DIC developed after delivery and a giant liver hemangioma was diagnosed via abdominal CT. The cause of DIC was Kasabach-Merritt syndrome owing to a giant hepatic hemangioma. First, combination therapy of 2 mg/kg

Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy for a huge splenic vascular lesion with aneurysms in a patient with impending Kasabach-Merritt syndrome-like phenomenon.

Splenic vascular lesions are relatively rare and are usually found incidentally. However, the vascular lesions associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, such as hemangioma, can be life-threatening. We herein describe the case of a young adult female patient with a huge splenic vascular lesion, aneurysms of the splenic artery, and increased plasma levels of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products and D-dimers. Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy was performed, after which the coagulopathy was drastically improved. Minimally invasive surgical intervention such as hand-assisted laparoscopic sp

Pulmonary manifestation of a condition resembling Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in a woman with abdominal angiomatosis associated with consumptive coagulopathy--surgical management: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is a benign condition characterized by hemangiomatosis, severely disseminated intravascular consumption coagulopathy, and thrombocytopenia. The mortality rate increases from 12% to 30% in hemorrhagic cases. In general, the symptoms primarily manifest in the gastrointestinal tract, the skin, and the subcutaneous tissue. There is no publication about pulmonary manifestation of angiomatosis in combination with vascular malformation and hemoptysis. This is the first description of a Kasabach-Merritt syndrome-like condition in the lung. CASE PRESENTATION: We

Successful use of spinal anesthesia in a patient with severe Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome associated with upper airway abnormalities and chronic Kasabach-Merritt coagulopathy.

Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the triad of capillary or cavernous hemangiomas, venous varicosities or malformations, and soft tissue or bone hypertrophy. Neuraxial anesthesia in patients with Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome has been infrequently described and has not been previously reported when accompanied by consumptive coagulopathy with thrombocytopenia (Kasabach-Merritt syndrome). The authors describe their clinical management of a 23 year-old woman with Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome who presented for elective total knee arthroplasty. Her past medical history was

Severe hemorrhage complicating the Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber syndrome.

The Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber (KTW) syndrome is a congenital disorder of angiogenesis characterized by macular nevus, skeletal and soft tissue hypertrophy, venous varicosities, and arteriovenous fistulas. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, a consumptive coagulopathy with thrombocytopenia, are both associated with the KTW syndrome. We describe a 30-year-old woman with KTW syndrome and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome who had DIC with severe hemorrhage after a routine gynecologic procedure. The bleeding was controlled with the use of intravenous low-dose hepar

[Oropharyngeal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma].

The kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a very infrequent tumor proceeding from the endothelial-derived spindle cells, more often found on the limbs, although peritoneal, retroperitoneal and sacrum locations are also prevailing. Head and neck are exceptional locations. The kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is almost exclusively found in children and early adolescents, and it is highly associated with the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome and lymphangiomatosis. The main treatment is the tumor surgical removal, including wide margins, plus supporting therapy when Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is linked. We rep

Clinical spectrum of tufted angiomas in childhood: a report of 13 cases and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Tufted angioma (TA) is a rare benign vascular tumor that mostly appears during infancy or early childhood. Histologic tufts of capillaries infiltrating the whole dermis in a "cannonball" distribution pattern associated with dilated lymphatic vessels are characteristic of the disease and confirm the diagnosis. Few case series of TA have been published, and the morphologic structure and evolution of TA seem to vary. OBSERVATIONS: We describe the largest series to date of childhood TA, comprising 13 cases. All children developed lesions within the first year of life; 7 cases were con

Kaposi-like infantile hemangioendothelioma. A distinctive vascular neoplasm of the retroperitoneum.

Retroperitoneal soft-tissue tumors are rare in infancy. In this report, we describe a distinctive hemangioendothelioma occurring in the retroperitoneum of a 10-month-old baby girl. This lesion was complicated by obstructive jaundice, intestinal obstruction, and thrombocytopenia (Kasabach-Merritt syndrome) leading to intracranial hemorrhage. The microscopic features of this tumor, characterized by infiltrative lobules of spindle cells and capillaries, are distinct from those of other well-recognized vasoformative tumors. In some areas, the tumor shows a striking resemblance to Kaposi's sarcoma;

Intracranial kaposiform hemangioendothelioma: proposal of a new malignant variant.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor of infancy and early childhood that occurs mainly in soft tissue and the retroperitoneum. The pathological characteristics of a KHE are fascicles of spindleshaped endothelial cells and slitlike vascular channels with irregular tumor margins. In spite of benign features such as rare mitoses and a low MIB-1 labeling index, a KHE is categorized as an intermediate malignancy because of local invasiveness into adjacent lymph nodes or organs. Resection is the treatment of choice for this type of tumor and adjuvant medical therapy is prep

Comprehensive Analyses of Coagulation Parameters in Patients with Vascular Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Vascular anomalies comprise a diverse group of rare diseases with altered blood flow and are often associated with coagulation disorders. The most common example is a localized intravascular coagulopathy in venous malformations leading to elevated D-dimers. In severe cases, this may progress to a disseminated intravascular coagulopathy with subsequent consumption of fibrinogen and thrombocytes predisposing to serious bleeding. A separate coagulopathy is the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon in kaposiform hemangioendothelioma characterized by platelet trapping leading to thrombocytopenia
