Investigation into the use of novel pretreatments in the fermentation of Alaria esculenta by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and kombucha SCOBY.

High pressure processing (HPP), ultrasound probe (USP) and ultrasound bath (USB) were applied to Alaria esculenta as a fermentation pre-treatment. Seaweed was then fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LAB) or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). Physiochemical properties of fermented seaweed were measured. pH was significantly different (p < 0.05) across SCOBY-fermented samples with different pre-treatments but not LAB-fermented samples (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in total viable count (TVC) with the highest count in HPP-treated samples, and low

A comprehensive comparison of single- and composite-seaweed feeds on growth performance, lipid metabolism, and immune function of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea).

INTRODUCTION: The large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) is an economically important fish species in China, yet its quality and value are compromised by excessive fat deposition induced by high-fat diets under high-density aquaculture. Our previous study noted the lipid-regulating potential of individual seaweed components like fucoidan and kelp (Saccharina japonica) powder, the synergistic effects of composite seaweed feeds remain underexplored. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of 3% Neoporphyra haitanensis compared with its control feed (CM1), and two composite seaweed feed

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae isolated from gull-inflicted wounds in southern right whale calves.

Southern right whales Eubalaena australis from Peninsula Valdés, Argentina, show wounds produced by kelp gulls Larus dominicanus that feed on the whales' dorsal skin and blubber. During the 2013 whale season, several calves were reported showing kelp gull injuries with a swollen area surrounded by rhomboid-shaped raised edges. Samples from 9 calves were taken in order to establish the etiology of these rhomboid-shaped wounds; 2 calves (one living, one dead) showed gull-inflicted injuries with rhomboid-shaped edges. Samples from the dead calf were histologically characterized by the presence of

Aquatic polymers can drive pathogen transmission in coastal ecosystems.

Gelatinous polymers including extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) are fundamental to biophysical processes in aquatic habitats, including mediating aggregation processes and functioning as the matrix of biofilms. Yet insight into the impact of these sticky molecules on the environmental transmission of pathogens in the ocean is limited. We used the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii as a model to evaluate polymer-mediated mechanisms that promote transmission of terrestrially derived pathogens to marine fauna and humans. We show that transparent exopolymer particles, a particulate form o

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in seabirds collected along the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are two closely related protozoans that infect a wide range of animals, including birds. However, the occurrence of N. caninum and T. gondii in seabirds is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the presence of T. gondii and N. caninum DNA in tissue samples of seabirds. Tissue samples of the pectoral muscles, heart, and brain were collected from 47 birds along the coastline of Santa Catarina State, SC, Brazil. The DNA was extracted from the tissues and screened using nested-PCR (nPCR) targeting internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). T. gondii DN

Seabirds (Laridae) as a source of Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp. and antimicrobial resistance in South Africa.

Zoonotic thermophilic Campylobacter and nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica are a major cause of foodborne human gastroenteritis worldwide. There is little information about reservoirs of these zoonotic agents in Africa. Thus, chicks of kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus, n = 129) and greater crested terns (Thalasseus bergii, n = 100) were studied at five colonies on the Western Cape coast (South Africa) during summer 2013/2014. Campylobacter spp. occurrence was 14.0% (CI95% : 9.9-19.3), with C. jejuni the most frequently isolated species, whilst that of Salmonella was 27.5% (CI95% : 21.9-33.9) overal

Iodine Status and Thyroid Function in a Group of Seaweed Consumers in Norway.

Seaweeds, or macroalgae, may be a good dietary iodine source but also a source of excessive iodine intake. The main aim in this study was to describe the iodine status and thyroid function in a group of macroalgae consumers. Two urine samples were collected from each participant (n = 44) to measure urinary iodine concentration (UIC) after habitual consumption of seaweed. Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), free triiodothyronine (fT3), and peroxidase autoantibody (TPOAb), were measured in a subgroup (n = 19). A food frequency questionnaire and an iodine-specific 24 h

Adjuvant activity of Chinese herbal polysaccharides in inactivated veterinary rabies vaccines.

Four botanical polysaccharide preparations (from Astragalus, Echinacea, wolfberry, and kelp) were evaluated as immunopotentiators/adjuvants of a veterinary rabies vaccine. Results showed that lymphocyte proliferation and some cytokines were significantly elevated, with cellular immune responses skewed towards Th1 and Tc1. All four polysaccharides produced accelerated and enhanced effects on rabies-neutralizing antibody responses in mice and dogs. The results also indicated that certain botanical polysaccharides could be used in rabies vaccine formulations for early and persistent prophylaxis.

Accommodation motor neurons in the foveate teleost Paralabrax clathratus: horseradish peroxidase labeling and axonal morphometry, with comparisons to other ciliary nerve components.

Although much is known about the optics and mechanism of ocular accommodation in teleost fishes, there is to date no description of the neurons innervating the muscle of accommodation, the lens retractor. I have identified accommodation motor neurons in the kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, by backfilling the lens retractor nerve (a branch of the short ciliary nerve) with the retrograde tracer horseradish peroxidase. These neurons comprise a subpopulation of relatively large unipolar neurons in the ciliary ganglion. Backfilling either of the remaining ciliary nerve branches (which innervate ma

Particulate and dissolved organic carbon losses in high latitude seaweed farms.

The role of macroalgae as natural sinks for carbon dioxide (CO2) has long been recognized, and interest for climate mitigating solutions from seaweed cultivation is quickly rising. Erosion of biomass provides natural avenues for carbon sequestration at sea, yet data is still lacking for important European cultivars, particularly combining particulate (POC) and dissolved (DOC) organic carbon losses. In this study, data is provided on carbon uptake, lamina growth and erosion over two consecutive seasons for the kelp Saccharina latissima (Phaeophyceae) deployed in Autumn and Winter in Hitra, Norw

Urchinbot: An open-source model for the rapid detection and classification of habitat-modifying sea urchin species.

Sea urchin overgrazing can transform vital kelp forest ecosystems into less productive 'urchin barrens'. In southeastern Australia and northeastern New Zealand, overgrazing by three sea urchin species, Evechinus chloroticus, Centrostephanus rodgersii and Heliocidaris erythrogramma, has caused habitat losses across 1000s of kilometres of coastline. Underwater imagery is now a critical tool for monitoring urchin impacts on large scales, however image manual annotation is prohibitively time-consuming, delaying crucial decision-making and necessitating an automated solution. Using underwater image

Laminarin sulfate from Lessonia flavicans as a potential non-animal anticoagulant with minimal hemorrhagic risk: Structural characterization by NMR spectroscopy and activity analysis.

Chemical sulfation of well-defined, low-molecular-weight, non-animal polysaccharides represents a potential approach to anticoagulants that potently inhibit the intrinsic tenase complex (iFXase) while causing fewer side effects, notably a low risk of bleeding. From Lessonia flavicans, we isolated a 5.5-kDa laminarin (LFP0) with a (1 → 3)-β-D-glucan core and trace branching. LFP0 was sulfated under anhydrous and short-time conditions to afford four derivatives (LFP0-S1-S4) with degrees of substitution (DS, 0.1-1.5), molecular weights (6.2-10.9 kDa), and sulfate contents (5.8%-46.2%). The role of inputs of marine wrack and carrion in sandy-beach ecosystems: a global review.

Sandy beaches are iconic interfaces that functionally link the ocean with the land via the flow of organic matter from the sea. These cross-ecosystem fluxes often comprise uprooted seagrass and dislodged macroalgae that can form substantial accumulations of detritus, termed 'wrack', on sandy beaches. In addition, the tissue of the carcasses of marine animals that regularly wash up on beaches form a rich food source ('carrion') for a diversity of scavenging animals. Here, we provide a global review of how wrack and carrion provide spatial subsidies that shape the structure and functioning of sa

Impact of harvesting method and advanced post-harvest processing technologies on the potentially toxic trace elements and iodine content of brown seaweed Alaria esculenta.

The concentration dynamics of potentially toxic trace elements (PTTEs), such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) as well as iodine (I) (micronutrient) were investigated across multiple post-harvest processing strategies in the brown seaweed Alaria esculenta (A. esculenta), traditionally consumed in coastal regions of Europe, America, and Southeast Asia. Homogenized composite samples of wild and cultivated biomass were subjected to conventional (blanching, drying) and advanced physical technologies (ultrasound (US), microwave (MW), US+MW). Novel Drugs Implicated in Pigmented Purpuric Dermatoses.

We describe two cases of cutaneous eruptions of pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPDs) arising after exposure to medications not previously reported in the literature as causing these reactions. Specifically, two women had biopsy-proven PPDs, one after exposure to an over-the-counter iodine supplement marketed as an extract from "Norwegian kelp," and the other after intraocular injections of pegaptanib, a vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor. The eruption occurred shortly after beginning the medication and resolved upon discontinuation. This highlights the importance of considering over-

Effects of three major amino acids found in Japanese broth on glucose metabolism and gastric emptying.

OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, the effect of the broth of dried kelp and dried bonito, dashi, on glucose metabolism and digestion has rarely been studied. Based on the component analysis of three actual broths served in traditional restaurants, a chemically synthesized broth with three free amino acids (histidine, glutamate, aspartate) and salt was prepared to investigate their effect on glucose metabolism, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) secretion, and digestion. METHODS: In study 1, seven healthy individuals were enrolled in a four-peri

Two cases of anaphylaxis after laminaria insertion.

Anaphylaxis following laminaria insertion rarely occurs but may be a life-threatening condition. Laminaria tents, prepared from natural sea kelp, are commonly used prior to elective termination of pregnancy to achieve cervical dilatation. We report herein two cases of anaphylaxis caused by IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to laminaria. Two women, each of whom had undergone at least one previous abortion where a laminaria had been utilized, developed anaphylactic reaction following laminaria insertion. The reaction included urticaria, nausea, breathing difficulty, and hypotension. The patients sub

Airway foreign body with clinical features mimicking bronchial asthma.

A 56-year-old Japanese male with persistent cough, stridor and diffuse wheezing for 6 months had obstructive pulmonary dysfunction and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to inhaled methacholine. Because of a poor response to glucocorticoid therapy and neutrophilia in the peripheral blood and sputum, chest computed tomography was performed and a plate-like tumor in the truncus intermedius was identified.
