PURPOSE: The purpose of the investigation was to prepare a bioengineered ocular surface tissue replacement consisting of (presumed) human corneal epithelial stem cells in a cross-linked fibrin gel for potential transplant.
METHODS: Presumed human epithelial stem cells were harvested, isolated, and cultivated as previously described from adult donor corneas obtained from a tissue and organ bank. The cultured corneal epithelial stem cells were suspended in a fibronectin/fibrin gel cross-linked by factor XIII. Plasma components were derived from a fibrinogen-rich cryoprecipitate of human plasma.

BACKGROUND: Dermatan sulfate (DS) is a highly sulfated polysaccharide with a variety of biological functions in extracellular matrix organization and processes such as tumorigenesis and wound healing. A distinct feature of DS is the presence of iduronic acid, produced by the two enzymes, DS-epimerase 1 and 2, which are encoded by Dse and Dsel, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Basal epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a hereditary skin blistering disorder resulting in most cases from missense mutations in the keratin 5 (KRT5) or keratin 14 (KRT14) genes.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the underlying mutations in different EBS subtypes and correlate genotype and phenotype.

Mesotheliomas with small cell morphology are rare and only one study of such cases has been published. As a result of their rare occurrence, some investigators have cast doubt on the existence of such a histologic variant of mesothelioma.
